The Official 'Michael' Bio-Pic Thread

Have I missed something. Why is the movie only screening until 30th April in UK cinemas? I tried to book next week with some friends but my local cinema (Odeon) says the last day to book in the 30th April???
Because usually you can only book 1 week at a time. Probably on tuesday evening or so, you wil be able to book beyond the 30th until the 7th.

I don’t see why they can’t reuse and recontextualise the cut scenes, like the raid and strip search, to a more generalised allegation rather than the specifics of the Chandler case. Hopefully they can figure out how to seamlessly blend old and new footage for Part 2 in order to use everything that was cut
It's the Evan Chandler recorded phone call that I would most want to see included.

This is a powerful statement - Swifties will be mad AF ;)

Its a bit like MichaelMania again just without MJ being part of it himself, so the best thing we can have still!

Lets keep playing spotify and see if we can get MJ to the top 10 artists :)

This has made me so happy.

Michael is still breaking records years after his passing. I don’t think any other artist is capable of that. I love Michael and his fan community.

It’s not though. Branca’s scenes are as follows:

- He is hired by MJ and immediately ordered to fire his father, which we know happened
- He sits at Hayvenhurst while MJ outlines his desire to release the best selling album of all time and make short films, which is more than plausible
- He sits in on a meeting with MJ and Walter Yetnikoff, which again is more than plausible
- He visits MJ in the hospital, which, again, likely

He’s barely in the movie, and he’s very clearly depicted as someone hired to do MJ’s bidding lol. I know people on this forum hate the guy (justifiably so in many cases), but his depiction is pretty accurate and tasteful.
exactly and the fact that Branca didn't include his role in MJ acquiring the beatles catalog which is his proudest accomplishment kinds disproves the claims he wanted the movie to be all about him.

i thought the film was pretty good, but some of that is probably from how good it sounded in imax. jaafar was really good at nailing michaels idiosyncrasies and that sort of soft inquisitiveness. it does feel like a montage where scenes are just very disconnected. like youre going through someones life and not really too invested in the underlying plot elements. it keeps the central theme of joe as the antagonist, and the film serves as this battle that michael ultimately wins through liberation. the script is kind of cartoonish at times because of this, but its fine. its not trying to be deeper than it is. in fact, based on what michael and other books have said, i almost feel like joes depiction is somewhat charitable given just how much of a prick he was. on the flip side, i think people saying michael isnt humanized because he doesnt present as flawed are likely not equally applying that to other films. i think hes humanized well enough with the moments he spends contrasted between his mother and father, and then again with bill. again, its not a masterpiece, but its solid. i think if the film went as actually planned, it would be only marginally better than it is.

the fact is, in the allotted time, you will never get too much out of something like this due to the sheer amount of years covered for a real person. it would need to be a miniseries with a season per era to truly capture that. the lack of rebbie and janet was really jarring, and some of the inaccuracies were a bit... weird, but nothing too distracting. its not like everyone is a hardcore mj fan thats going to give a shit after all.

john branca... lol. hes painted in such a way that hes one of michaels close confidants, hes "his guy," which, yes it could all be accurately depicted, but i find it suspect given he has the ultimate say as the estate. i mean, if branca really was team michael to that degree, it would only make his later decisions that much more baffling. i can say i liked the branca character in the film independent of that though. and it reiterates a problem that, while its nice, it does jump too quickly between years before you can see much happening. theres no conflict or development outside the overarching joe plot. i think thats overall fine, and the way michael is shown would be a way he approves and would like.

everyone seemed to love it though, there was a lot of positive energy well around for michael. people loved my billie jean outfit and i got a ton of compliments. overall the experience was great and you come out wanting to dance. everyone ive talked to about it irl hasnt had anything negative to say. i hope that part 2 includes childhood, because the huge neverland build up would really benefit from it. i did enjoy the childlike nature they emphasized for mj too, it was innocent and i think a good representation. i really liked the twister scene, and like, yeah i can see myself in that situation

i’m glad other people are mentioning the twister scene, that’s one thing that stuck with me afterwards. i was distraught going home the first time i saw it 😭

I think this review is one of the best articulated even if its not just a big thumps up for the movie.

This guy has a fascinating defense of MJ on his other channel as well btw!

link to the defense? can’t find his other channel

I have a question is Jaafar doing the singing or is it all Michael's singing
There was a small part in one of the studio scenes that sounds like it could've been Jaafar but they used Michael's multi tracks and 1988 Wembley audio

Good thread OP! I cannot really see how they can do a part 2 considering the problems they faced even in this part.

Good question. I had it bookmarked on playlist on youtube, its now showing as private. I am not sure if that means he has hidden his old channel and it will never be available again :-(

I did post it on this forum some time after Leaving Neverland, so the direct link to is somewhere on the forum. But if the video is hidden its not going to help!

It originally was going to be a single film and the timeline went beyond the bad era. It was only split into two after adjustments had to be made.

What song was Jaafar at beat it studio scene singing? It was a song like leave me alone and another part of me mixed, he was singing it acapella

Agreed. Unfortunately this isn't allowed though.

I would love it if they released a directors cut with scenes that were cut that were all pre 88'. They could also use some of it as a retrospective in part 2. The Another Part Of Me performance should begin the second film.

We need to keep going to watch the movie to be able to pass Bohemian Rhapsody - I am going a couple of times more this week ✌️

Current projection according to MJJsource EU.

what sparked the jump on bohemian rhapsody's 10th weekend?

what sparked the jump on bohemian rhapsody's 10th weekend?

The Wikipedia page says that it was added to almost 200 more theatres in the US on the 10th weekend but that's a huge jump even with that in mind so I'm not sure if something else happened (other than awards season) 🤔

They showed Frank Di Leo with his cigar but nothing else. Since Branca helped with firing Joseph, they could have introduced Frank as a new manager somehow. Because it just looked like Branca did everything and was the only figure around Michael's new team.
I thought that was frank!

The plan is surely now to do 3 movies.
The second movie will end with the accusations.
The third would be a Godfather 2 type, MJ facing his trial in the 2000's intersped with scenes from his youth.
That would be the only way to make It bankable and use those 70s/80s scenes shot.
I dont think they will do 3 movies

Japan released late and added big numbers in later weeks (it'll be the same with Michael + South Korea).
Europe (especially the UK & Italy) had exceptional word of mouth (same with Michael, in France first of all).
Music-driven films tend to have slow declines vs superhero films.
