oh, wend, your photos reminded me of this one, originally posted by @83magic. I love it.

Thriller era counts as Short Hair, imo.
this picture is iconic. it was featured on original ‘thriller’ merchandise. it’s one of the first images that instantly come to mind when I think of Michael. of course, I love the purple too 💜

I didn't know that. Or, at least, I don't remember it from back then. But I didn't buy any of Michael's records until he died so maybe I didn't pick up on all the promo stuff.

It certainly is an iconic picture. It's awesome. I'm so glad I found it via you. Thank you so much! I haven't seen it anywhere else.

oh, that's so cool.

:D

well thers a chance if you still need it
oh wend, I don't want to buy the thing, lol. I'm not a collector. If I didn't get something I don't really care. I was surprised to see this bc I don't remember it at all. It's clearly an iconic cover - like the 1988 cover of Hello mag - so I feel like I should at least remember seeing it back then. But it is so unfamiliar. Which feels weird.

It's also interesting to me bc we were clearly in a phase when the music press still took Michael seriously and would devote a decent amount of space to him and his work. That did change later on, I'm sure about that.

Mm, that Hello cover shot. Feel the need to post it, purely for reference purposes, lol. I'll use a small version bc no short hair, obvs.

Ah wowsers 1988 , not seen this one Zin -Thank you for posting, oh dear me thats a beauty Yeah. That's why these earlier magazine pieces are valuable vessels @zinniabooklover because they do write about his body of work , Blues and Soul in particular great example -Plus i probably can post it here.
i remember sky magazine with the big huge , hadnt seen such glossy front covers before ,Nor the man that was gracing them. Satellite and Sky tv guides were a stand out point in newsagents and shops and he was all over them. they wanted him. The shift of attitudes changed yes it did but slowly, it was little pokes first and less focus on his work but there was a time where it was all about his music. i came in on 1991 , so i had to catch up whilst experiencing Dangerous right, so i dont actually truly remember that lovely melody maker one myself . loving that Hello one , i remember nov 16 1991 is the hello i remember then liz wedding then onwards -,im like a stuck record i know lol

edit - found iconic hello 88 , very expensive and sold out completely

Yeah, Blues & Soul was pretty good. I didn't buy it every month, didn't even buy it every time Michael was in it. I was deep into my rock albums and was pretty good at ignoring Michael some of the time. So I'm sure I missed some of them. Ngl, I do envy sw23 just a little bit bc she has access to all sorts of resources that us mere plebs don't have. Don't get me wrong, I'm not sobbing in a corner about this, lol. I'm not going to do anything about it. It's really not a big deal. But it must be nice to be able to access the archives of so many newspapers, journals etc and really dive into all of this stuff.

I often come across magazine covers when I'm online looking for photos and I always wanna post all of them but feel like I need to hold off in case no-one else is really that bothered, lol. I'm sure I'm alone in my madness! :D

They sure did want him. I already said this in another thread when I posted a bigger version of that Hello cover shot. I didn't buy it but I remember when it was out. Dunno if you remember this, wend, but you know the little newspaper kiosks you get (used to get? are they even still around?) - anyway, they would always pin up copies of Hello all around the edge of the kiosk and all across the front. So it was like a sort of art installation or mini art exhibition, iyswim. So this 1988 Hello cover, you'd just see it everywhere. In the newsagents, obvs, but also the kiosks, all over the tube stations etc etc. You could be on a bus stopped at the lights and you'd glance out and there'd be one of the kiosks and there was the Michael photo just all over. I mean, only for that one week, obvs. But that was enough. Everywhere you went, these little art exhibitions of Michael and you didn't have to make an effort or anything. He was just there. It was cooler than cool.

The shift of attitudes changed yes it did but slowly,
ooh, I dunno, wend. Didn't seem all that slow to me. Could be wrong. I'm not gonna claim my memory is rock solid. But it def didn't seem slow. The backlash was already there in the Thriller era. But let's not dwell on that. Not today. Just for today, let's be happy and silly and lighthearted and glad for Michael. Glad for him for achieving (some of) his ambitions. :D

it was little pokes first and less focus on his work but there was a time where it was all about his music. i came in on 1991 , so i had to catch up whilst experiencing Dangerous right, so i dont actually truly remember that lovely melody maker one myself .
I think what happened is, I was so deep into the punk and post-punk thing that the MM cover didn't register hard with me. I would have seen it, for sure, but clearly didn't buy it and that's OK. My attention on Michael did always wax and wane. And OTW era was not for me. J5 and early Jacksons was me. Then Thriller onwards. Totally me! That middle bit, though? OTW? I was a bit absent at that time, lol.

Adam!

loving that Hello one ,
it's freakin' gorgeous!

i remember nov 16 1991 is the hello i remember
ooh, I'm intrigued now

then liz wedding then onwards -,im like a stuck record i know lol
:ROFLMAO:

I am not surprised.

Wait.... now where is this from?? I've never seen this.
Don't know. I did find them both together, this was ages ago. I posted them on the Thriller era thread but I'm sure I posted them somewhere else first. Can't remember if I found these gifs on the board or online. No, hang on, it must have been on the board bc there was a little comment about poss TGIM and / or poss Say Say Say. I wouldn't have known that.

The clip that got posted today confirmed the TGIM one so I'm thinking the other one is Say. But I have no idea, really.

Smh it's so much mj out there that we probably will never see
That was my exact response when I first came across these gifs. I have crap IT skills but you can't get a gif from a photo, it can only come from film / video. I didn't know at the time about Macca having filmed TGIM. But, I mean, in general, there's so many gifs and short clips floating around, why can't we have the full thing? Why does it have to be so hard?

...at this point...jb & Tom sneddon are in the same category because there's no way. I need to find out more about that clip. I knew the sweater clip was tgim from a few post back. Someone here synced it

He is so so so so so many things more important than this, but MY GOD he is so gorgeous. It is exhausting lol.

Also @zinniabooklover and @wendijane LOVE all of the magazine covers!!! 😍 I asked friends and family for more magazines from the 80s with MJ covers and this gives me some specific ones to look for. I am not a collector and have no interest in being one, but I feel a strong need to own as many magazines that cover MJ (especially in the 80s) as possible. I need to know the cultural landscape of his existence then. I so deeply crave a contextual understanding of his fame and life.

The magazines are the way to go, it focus on his art, thats what i did too i went back and hunted down magazines from the late 70s and 80s, fanzines , some annuals too, i know you know of moonwalk and dancing the dream. we traded on fanzines then and there were the art of pen pals so i was quite lucky. but stay you will have loads of sucesss in tracking down what you need cause we all can appreciate ebay being a minefield for treasures. i tracked down the melody maker its easier now. and if there are some with exceeding prices, well think of it as an investment because once this man gets through, he is in your heart for LIFE in all the best possible ways.

oh, you're in trouble now!!!

You know what's going to happen, don't you? I'm going to tell myself I'm going to be incredibly restrained about this. And then I'm going to go bonkers!

Just sayin'

Don't have a collector mentality at all but I desperately want to post more magazine covers. Whenever I come across covers or newspaper clips online I wanna post all of them.

I need to know the cultural landscape of his existence then. I so deeply crave a contextual understanding of his fame and life.
This is exactly why. Some of the newspaper bits, you can't whack up the size enough to actually read them and you can't always find the relevant info (newspaper name, etc). And I don't have access to newspaper archives and don't care enough to try to do anything about it. But I would love to be able to revisit the period through the mags and newspapers. Now that I'm paying a bit more attention, lol.
