i don't have a great ear for all that, so i wanted to ask; outside of the obvious ones (Thriller and Bad) are all of MJ's albums on streaming remasters or is the rest original mixes ? can't tell any differences for Off the Wall and the 90s albums really

I don’t think any of them are the original mixes, save for maybe BOTDF and Invincible.

In fact I’m sure of that.

HIStory, BOTDF and Invincible are the same as the original mixes on all streaming services. (Well, HIStory is technically the 2nd mix, but still, it's not remastered.)
Here's where it gets tricky:
On Spotify and Apple, all albums (except the ones already mentioned) are remastered, brickwalled, compressed, yada yada yada.

On every other streaming service though (Deezer, Qobuz, Tidal, etc); OTW and Thriller are their 90s remasters, same exact remasters found in CD reissues and repressings from the late 80s and early 90s. They sound quite good imo!

As for Bad... well, unfortunately Bad is the 2012 remaster on every streaming service.

And Dangerous is also it's 2014/2015 remaster on every streaming service.

I had the same question you did back in 2022, and these were the answers I got out of my research. Maybe the situation changed in the previous years, but I honestly doubt it.

^^This 👍

thanks for answering !!

regarding Thriller, i felt it'd be an older mix tbh, it sounds noticably more quiet. that's really good though, these mixes still sound pretty great honestly !! hoping they never merge the standard Thriller tracks with Thriller 25 or 40 on streaming

It’s my favourite mix of the album. It’s wonderful.
Mine is actually the 2nd/3rd mix of Bad (album), it's found in CD reissues from 1988 - 1995. It's in my opinion the definitive version of the album! Smooth Criminal is straight up a "remix", made by Chris Currell with orders straight from Michael... hits so much harder than the OG 87 mix, imo.
If yall can pick up a reissue from that period, I'd heavily recommend it. It's a different experience, but a good one.

Thriller is the updated mix where literally just Billie Jean ad-libs were raised in volume. The Hi-Res master is sourced from the 1999 SACD master iirc

All releases on streaming are the updated versions and remastered from Off The Wall to Invincible in their Hi-Res Formats. Listening to their 16/44 versions, those seem to be from different masters, either 90s or 2000s.

To be fair I do like later mixes 👍, but I got the OG 87 mix on its release on cassette so it’s probably the nostalgia factor. Anytime I listen to that mix I’m transported back to the 80’s.

Indeed, the Hi-Res versions on streaming are all remastered versions except for Thriller on Qobuz, which is sourced from the 99 SACD like you mentioned.
Off The Wall 16/44 is the same master as the CD reissues from the late 80s or 90s. (CDEPC 83468 is a good example, although other CDs use the same master and a different code.)
Thriller 16/44 is the late 80s/90s EK 38112, same thing I said about OTW applies.

At least for me, (I use Apple Music so this might be different for Spotify) there is the remastered versions and the original mixes on there of Thriller, Bad, OTW, and Dangerous. but I'm not sure about History, BOTDF, and Invincible. so far I haven't seen any remastered about the ones I just mentioned. also I don't think they sound different, they sound the same to me too 😭 so yea

If you buy the HiRes Version of the Thriller Album on Qobuz, you'll get the SACD master of the album.
Which has great detail, dynamics and all that good stuff.

I think HIStory and BOTDF are indeed remastered, but not Invincible. In the case of HIStory, it's the 2nd mix (censored version of TDCAU and different intro on HIStory).

Apart for the censored They Don't Care About Us and the intro to HIStory being different, are the mixes and the overall master that different on the other songs compared to the first pressing?

The actual original 87 mix of Bad? I doubt it but I’d love to be wrong. I recently moved over from Spotify to Apple Music but I don’t seem to have Bad 87.

There's no original mixes for the remastered albums on any streaming services as far as I know. They all use the remastered later versions.

They're much louder/more compressed.
