First and foremost, off topic, want to give congrats to Moonstreet for becoming a moderator of the Michael Jackson subreddit. Take good care of it please, I have faith you’ll do great with it and make Michael proud.
Back on topic, during the Quincy Jones tribute at the Grammy’s, we got Stevie Wonder (with a call out to MJ) doing a bit of We Are the World with the LA children’s choir.
I thought that the was the most MJ we’d get. But than Janelle Monáe did Don’t Stop 'Til You Get Enough in full on MJ impersonator attire. Like Elvis, he’s so legendary that she didn’t even need to say whose she’s emulating. While the performance is decent (though not great), the energy and the excitement from the crowd is what made it for me. You can see it on their faces, especially with the biggest stars like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift, that their childhoods were flashing in front of their eyes.
I just wanted to say this because I come on both here and the reddit page and I see many fans bitching, but I wanted to share why this put a smile on my face. Yes I know Janelle did a mock up of the balcony incident, but she’s always been a troll like that. Also if you look it up, she’s very clearly a fan.
I’m just happy that such an unabashed MJ tribute was performed in the most mainstream music event of the year (solidifying that MJ has shook off all the bad press from Dan Greed’s Lying Neverland), with all the celeb musicians in the crowd looking like they were having the time of their lives. In both cases, it felt like they were all acknowledging that no matter what, MJ is Pop’s one and only King. I think that’s something we should all be happy and grateful for. But to each their own.
