Lip syncing is also done on TV shows because it's cheaper to press play on a CD/cassette player than it is to hire backing musicians, a sound crew, people to set up equipment etc.

Lip syncing is also done on TV shows because it's cheaper to press play on a CD/cassette player than it is to hire backing musicians, a sound crew, people to set up equipment etc.

That could be true in some cases, but it is not the main reason.

The main reason is that the organizers/producers of those TV shows want to minimize any risk of possible accident that comes with live singing.

Such as, the singer to forget some of the lines, or the live band to miss certain cues.

Also, organizers/producers have to strictly allocate beforehand the time for each number & here CD playback helps a lot, whereas with live singing & a live band they cannot be sure about that.

Even Prince who hated lip-syncing, yet he had to follow those rules & to lip-sync on certain TV shows.

it would be interesting to hear what 'billie jean' would have sounded like had the background music been pre-recorded in the same manner that the j5 medley was. not sure if the bassline would be as strong though..
