So did Randy Hansen just come up with the main guitar riff and Michael wrote the song around it for State of shock or did Randy write more of the song than that?

I'm not sure actually.

But speaking of this song, the BBC iPlayer currently has the whole of Live Aid up, because it's the 40th anniversary.

So you can listen to Tina Turner sing the song.

Plus there's all those legendary performances from Queen, U2, Madonna etc.

Never been much of a fan of state of shock , Surprising that such big artists were linked to it and that was the best they could come up with.

There is a lot of confusion about Randy Hansen. It's not the well-known guitarist, but a 12 year old kid, who came up with the title and some of the lyrics. Michael himself told about it, on the interview tapes for his book Moonwalk, that leaked some time ago:

Also, guitarist Randy Hansen explained in an interview a few years ago he wasn't involved and received royalties for the song erroneously.

It might've been better if Michael and Freddie got the chance to finish it. Jagger doesn't bring anything
The demo could have been released as it is. Maybe little mixing touches here and there.

As per Bill Bottrell's posts on X, it was Epic, who kinda opt against Freddie.
