the post Quincy albums are a bit better in my opinion, because they offer more diversity, more vocals to explore
Although Dangerous was my first MJ album, Invincible made me the fan that I am today.

Albums:

Got To Be There:
Ben:
Music & Me:
Forever Michael: - Havent heard all of them and only bits of songs, but I know Motown Michael was quite weak next to his adult stuff, even the hits get boring - so I will say 5/10 for the Motown era.

Off the Wall: 9.5/10 - Almost perfect and a funky danceable album.
Thriller: 10/10 - It is a masterpiece, no more can be said, it made history and made Michael Jackson the biggest name on the planet.
Bad: 10/10 - This is also perfect, funky, catchy and in your face - every song works, Michael's vocals are on point, the beats are hot and he gets down to business. Smooth Criminal is perfect hardcore dance funk. TWYMMF is perfect pop.
Dangerous: 9.75/10 - This is also great, some self indulgence, but enough, tight catchy and very funky numbers, plus he's up to date and the New Jack sound and rap fit in well with the class uptempo R & B and dance pop sound Michael masters. Plus its show casing an angrier and more adult side of Michael.
HIStory: 8.5/10 - This is not as good, but still has many standouts and a maturing Michael. The standouts tower over the less great stuff. There is so much still here and 13 years after thriller, Michael was still giving it to us!
BOTDF: (new songs only) 10/10 - Remixes 2/10 (Unlistenable) Those 5 songs at the start are bangers, Morphine and the horror suite of Ghosts and Is it scary.
Invincible: 7/10 - Patchy but again the highlights are there and the best part is Michael's fully mature and older sounding vocals. Michael's singing steals the show here, Break of Dawn is his most Prince/D'Angelo like cut ever and it rocks. Whatever Happens is his most sincere and beautiful song ever and You Rock my world will get stuck in your head.
Michael: 3/10 - I really don't even listen to it, it has 3 good songs.
Xscape: (origianls only) 8/10 - Mixes 5/10

Various Videos & Tours: not all of them because nobody wants to spend 2 hours filling this

Can you feel it: 7/10 - Song gets long in tooth and the synergized disco artwork has not aged well. Still the beat, the positivity, Jermaine's vocals are good and again Michael is perfection.
Thriller: 9/10 - It is so good, I am sick of it
Billie Jean: 10/10 - The video that made MJ as a video star, perfection
Beat It: 10/10 - It grabbed my 7 year old mind, kept my 17 year old one, endured my 27 year old one, loved my 37 year old one and keeps my 47 year old one!
Moonwalker: 4/10 - self indulgent quirk fest
Black or White: 7/10 - average, now dated, indulgent and overdone
Remember the Time: 6/10 - great song, meh video
In the Closet: Can't remember any video
Motown 25 solo + J5: 10/10 - For the moonwalk and all the other dancing in Billie Jean, again its icon making stuff.
Earth Song: 5/10 - way too much cheese by far
You are not alone: 3/10 - silly and self indulgent
You rock my world: 7/10 - I like this, depsite the fact Michael looks ghoulish and could reel in any girl looking like that.
HIStory tour: 8/10 - It was great
Dangerous tour 9/10 - It was greater
Bad tour 10/10 - It was the best, despite being on the same time as Lovesexy in the round.
Dangerous stage performance: 10/10 - I agree the dancing in that show at Budapest with the glass coffins and shit in Thriller is just - wow!
Super Bowl Half Time Show: 5/10 - I agree it was way below the Prince one in 2007
World Music Awards 96 performance: 7/10 - Jarvis Crocker is a pratt.
Someone in the dark song: 8/10 - It's good, but its hardly Thriller quality.

I love these kinds of threads💜for some reason I’m only seeing it now. I’ll answer later on. can I add the ‘don’t stop til you get enough’ video to be rated?

Motown 25 solo + J5: 10/10

Someone in the dark song: 10/10
I’m not an albums person but..

got to be there’ - has a few classics on here. young michael’s voice is arguably at its best.
score: 4.5/10

Ben’ - my least favourite of the motown series. depressing ballads that are beyond michael’s years. too many unnecessary covers.
score: 0/10

music & me’ - my favourite motown album. poignant songs such as the title track, ‘with a child’s heart’, and ‘euphoria’ (my personal favourite 💜). admittedly, it’s not something I come back to often, and some of it does contradict my critiques about the previous album (I am a jemini lol). however, if you’re searching for peace, this is it.
score: 6/10

forever, Michael’ - not as bad as ‘Ben’ but (almost) equally dreary 😞 save for ‘Cinderella stay awhile’ and ‘we’re almost there’. this was a young man. why did he sound so old?
score: 2.5/10

‘off the wall’ - michael’s breakthrough as a solo artist. from this point forward his work with his brothers would take more of a back seat. regarded as a classic by many, but truth be told, it’s only the first three singles; ‘don’t stop til you get enough’, ‘off the wall’, and ‘rock with you’ that are timeless essentials to my playlist.🫣 I also enjoy ‘I can’t help it’.. while I appreciate the more upbeat nature of the material this time, I find it to be lacking lyrical substance, and to be musically dark and heavy 😓 there are some songs that are just too average for thee michael jackson.
score: 4.5/10

thriller’ - any album that features; ‘wanna be startin somethin’ 💜, ‘thriller’💜, ‘beat it’💜, ‘billie jean’💜, and ‘human nature💜 is an absolute winner 🥇 in my book. what more do I need? those fore mentioned songs are all eclectic and intriguing in their own way. yet still catchy, accessible, and memorable. that’s the pop, which is not easy to pull off. it’s also something that michael would become the king of as a result of this album.
score: 7.5/10

various videos/performances

don’t stop til you get enough’ - really brings the song to life. a visual representation of it. groundbreaking for its time. ready makes use of the green screen. where is this taking place? in an ice world? a pinball machine? a fizzy drink (soda pop, perhaps a reference to the genre he would soon master?)? all the above and more? you can’t go wrong with any video that has just michael and his dancing as the main focus. his joyful liberation in on full display 💜
score: 9/10

can you feel it’ - the first true epic. totally driven by michael’s vision (he came up with the concept, and composed the score). a message of unity that was the essence of what michael represented 💜full of magic courtesy of the effects that were again, quite advanced at the time. not just visually, but also audibly. unfortunately they would often eat into the song itself, causing it to play second fiddle in its own video. however, it was a cinematic experience, and for me, the only way to consume the song. I only wish I could see more of michael in this. completely underrated I think.
score 9/10

‘billie jean’ - my absolute favourite 💜 at the risk of sounding repetitive, it contains all of the crucial elements that made michael who he was; magic, mystery, generosity, and of course, dance 💜 there’s a narrative that follows the song, yet departs from it at the same time. adding another dimension altogether. forty years later and I can still discover new possibilities. I love how michael’s wardrobe compliments the scenery and how surreal it all is. the runtime is equal to the song, which is a personal plus for me.
score 10/10

beat it’ - michael’s most important message as far as I’m concerned. the lyrics were already so vivid and the visuals only enhanced that. here michael was the sole peacemaker who had taken on the responsibility of stopping a knife fight the best way he knew how.. through dance of course 🤩this time it’s of mass synchronised kind. michael was secure in his individuality in a seedy world governed by toxic masculinity. he was the only male that didn’t need to follow the crowd and act macho to be cool. his fashion game took a major step up into the iconic realm, with the red zipper jacket and the white socks/loafers combo, which would become a trademark in itself. the theme of unity prevailed once again.
score: 10/10

say say say’ - the first true short film as a solo artist, although it’s a (equal) collaboration with paul mccartney. there is a scene with dialogue that precedes the song. it has a beginning, a middle, and a end. our two main characters manage to be charming as travelling performers, who trick locals into buying a ‘strength potion’ to raise money for an orphanage. again, there’s the charity from ‘billie jean’. what’s different this time is the humorous nature of it all. michael and paul have great chemistry with each other. michael’s childlike innocence is most notable here. he makes the most out of his camera time, whether it’s a simple turn, or a dazzling smile. the highlight is the montage of goofy (in a good way) performances. this short film is by no means as game changing as the others, but it still deserves recognition all the same. it honestly overshadows the song for me.
score: 7/10

*pause*

this has taken way longer than I anticipated. I’ll be back 2morrow to review and score ‘thriller’ and ‘motown 25’.

😴💤

Off the Wall: 10/10
Thriller: 10/10
Bad: 9/10
Dangerous: 10/10

Invincible: 6/10
Michael: 4/10
Xscape: (new mixes only) 6/10

Enjoyed reading your thoughts, especially on the videos @83magic , admittedly I also was completely surprised at the low album ratings, it makes me so shallow as I rate almost everything quite highly myself lol

Got To Be There: 3/10 (Some good tracks for sure but pretty slowed down and mediocre by the end)

Ben: 2/10 (same issues)

Music & Me: 3/10

Forever Michael: 10/10 (VERY UNDERRATED! Almost a perfect album for the time and what it was trying to do)

Off the Wall: 9/10 (Judging more harshly now. Phenomenal album but a few songs stopped it from being perfect. Nevertheless, incredible!)

Thriller: 10/10 (Probably the best cohesive album of all time and an absolute monster!)

Bad: 9/10 (Same problem as Off The Wall)

Dangerous: 7/10 (A few tracks bog this album down and hold it back from being perfect! Including Michael’s blatant Plagiarism of WYBT)

HIStory: 5/10 (This album frustrates the hell out of me! It starts off like it’s going to be the best album of all time! Scream, TDCAU, SIM, then slows down with This Time Around which is pretty decent but different. Then hits us with Earth Song which in my opinion eats every other humanitarian song he’s done before for breakfast! Then after that this album *****ng TANKS! With really only Tabloid Junkie to fall back on. This album is a discombobulated mess, it isn’t cohesive in the least and Michael clearly didn’t give a shit at this point which is sad)

BOTDF: (new songs only) 10/10 (Had he put these new songs on HIStory in Lou of the other filler tracks and scrapped a remix album History would have been much better.

Invincible: 4/10 (Same issues as HIStory. Not to mention it doesn’t feel like MJ at all sans a few tracks. Production was decent and definitely ahead of the curve but it just doesn’t do much for me. I welcomed more MJ R&b but this wasn't it.)

Michael: 8/10 (For the REAL TRACKS)

Xscape: (new mixes only) 2/10 (The OG songs were a 6/10 but the new mixes were garbage that Michael would’ve scoffed at and NEVER released! GARBAGE!)

I’m convinced tabloid junkie is in fact an unfinished demo. The verses are just gibberish.

my favourite album is the essential compilation, the 2010 version. I would easily give that 10/10 (the first half from ‘I want you back’ - ‘thriller’)💜the hits in their shortened radio/single edits, and in chronological order 💜I prefer these mixes because the sound is more crisp. definitely lives up to its title. if there was only one musical item of his I was allowed to keep forever, I’d choose this.

I’m actually shocked at how little Michael’s short films are discussed here. it was an art form that he revolutionised and was so well known for. I think they’re one of the most exciting things about him, and there’s a lot to analyse. they allowed michael to combine his talents and live out his fantasies as an actor. he enjoyed making them more than touring.

not all of the songs on the original edition (2005) had the shortened radio/single edits. it also featured ‘enjoy yourself’ and ‘dangerous’.
Hey 83! No idea if this will be of interest to you. @andjustice4some is being a bit cryptic, no idea if this is something Thriller related or if the focus is on later stuff. Posting it as FYI just in case.

EDIT - Just remembered, I posted this one a couple of days ago. Is it focused on HIStory or Thriller or just everything? Who knows?

Another EDIT - seems it is Thriller related. They are trying to get Thriller short film to 1 billion views by end Oct 2023.
The vid is 8m 27s.
