He did get a call. In fact, both he and his producer (Tony Kurtis) received calls from "MJ" at that time. However, the infamous Michael Jackson impersonator, Peter Midani, was also known to make similar phone calls and send gifts from Neverland to various individuals in the industry back then. It might have been MJ, or it could've been Midani. Venturing beyond this point would lead us into the realm of conjecture and opinion.
