Michael Jackson Quiz

Shocker:bugeyed

You scored 65%!

Back to studying.

I got 85% but at least two answers are wrong. One of them is the year they signed with Motown (Jackson 5) they had 1969, they actually signed in August 1968. Also the question about promoting videos for albums, it says Thriller is right, but Rock with you and Don't Stop Til you get enough, both have proper videos which are not just live, but catual filmed epics. Both ensured their songs went to #1.

So really I got 95%, only getting a question about his grammies wrong.

75%
My mistakes:
- number of solo nr. 1's, although I don't agree with the answer
- number of charities
- first single from Bad, although it's THEM who got that one wrong, not me.
- I didn't have a clue about where Rod Temperton is from.
- first album with videos as promotional tools, but that's highly debatable

My objections:
- The Jackson 5 actually didn't make a live debut in 1964, but in 1965. In 1964 they performed under the name The Jackson Family or The Jackson Brothers.
- He won 13 regular Grammies, but also two special Grammy awards, so I think that number should be 15
- He had 12 solo number 1's in the USA, not 11. I marked 13 because I thought they might also mean We Are The World
- The first single release from Bad wasn't Man In The Mirror, but I Just Can't Stop Loving You
- I also do not agree about Thriller being the first one regarding videos being succesful promotional tools.

All in all, it was entertaining, but not for hard core specialists like us on this board ;)

Billie Jean 78, I am surprised you got the Bad question wrong, I answered "Can't stop loving you" and got it right. Rod Temperton to me is important, as most of us in the British Commonwealth would know who he was, he wrote several hits for British group's Heatwave and Hot Chocolate. Also because he is a Black Briton, rare in the pre 1990s period there.

Bad singles were (And we should give this to the quiz compiler)
Can't Stop loving you - released July 29 1987
Bad - released September 1987 (A British DJ threatened to play the whole album on air on Aug 31 1987, but was told by Sony/Epic that he could only the first two singles above)
The way you make me feel - November 1987
Man in the Mirror - February 1988
Dirty Diana - May 1988 (All #1)
Smooth Criminal - August 1988 (Incredibly only #7)
Another Part of Me - December 1988 (#8)
Leave me alone - March 1989 (Did not chart due to some obscure chart rule)

Another single "Get It" with Stevie Wonder also was issued in March 1988, but this was not a MJ single but counted as a SW release, MJ is on Harmony vocals, but the song flopped in the lower reaches of the Hot 100. Ironically the duet with Stevie Wonder on Bad, Just Good friends, was not released as a single, possibly as Stevie had his own album coming out and did not want that to affect its success (Crossroads, was Stevie's first major flop since 1971). Possibly also as Stevie was on Motown, a label still regualrly releasing compilations of Jacksons material at the time.

In some territories, Liberian Girl was also released as a single in 1989.

Jackson 5 started as the Ripples and Waves in 1962, then Jackson 4 in 1963 (Marlon joined on Bongos) and Michael Joined in early 1964 when he joined on bongos and then moved to vocals in late 1964. They were known on and off as the Jackson Brothers, Jackson Family, Ripples and Waves featuring Michael and finally Jackson 5 by 1966. Joseph first got Jermaine, Tito and Jackie singing around 1961/62.

But I totally agree, this quiz is subjective, ambiguous in its questions and aimed more at the casual fan rather than the hardcore purists. I think in future any MJ quizzes should be entirely accurate quoting a book like the one by Adrian Grant as a source.

Well, I missed two-the number of charities and when they signed with Motown-but I REALLY thought they signed in 68-and didn't perform publicly under Motown until 69. :(

I got 80%. Missed the answers regarding Rod and The Jackson 5

Rod Temperton to me is important, as most of us in the British Commonwealth would know who he was, he wrote several hits for British group's Heatwave and Hot Chocolate.

Do you mean in the fan community or general population? He should be known in the fan community (having written some of MJ's biggest songs) but I don't know about the general population... I only know who he is because of MJ and I've never heard his name outside of a context related to MJ's work...
