In at Number 15 with his ninth Top 20 hit in as many week is Michael Jackson. Chronologically we've reached 1989 with the reappearance of 'Leave Me Alone' which came complete with a tongue in cheek animated video stuffed with Terry Gilliam-esque surrealism as images from the more outlandish tabloid claims about his lifestyle floated around. What made the original release of the track so distinctive was that although it was the 3,000th single release from the 'Bad' album, not everyone owned a copy already. 'Leave Me Alone' began life as the "bonus track" on the CD release, a common promotional tactic back then as record companies tried to give consumers an extra incentive to pick up the still relatively new format. Normally such tracks were an afterthought of b-side quality, the left over track from the sessions that didn't merit inclusion on the album itself. Jackson turned that on its head by not only releasing it as a single but seeing it become one of his biggest hits, hitting Number 2 swiftly after release.

To round off this week, just for a change we have two Michael Jackson-related singles. The first is the latest dualdisc release as we finally move beyond the 'Bad' years and head for 'Dangerous' territory. Latest release 'Black Or White' was released in late 1991 after months of anticipation. It's release marked a new phase in Jackson's solo career as he split from producer Quincy Jones in search of a different sound. At the very least 'Black Or White' was worth the wait, featuring an insistent guitar riff from Slash (he of Guns N' Roses) and one of MJ's most singalong choruses to date. To the surprise of many the track also featured a rap break from the mysterious LTB, this despite MJ having in the past denounced rap as the one genre he would never touch. Just as eye opening was the video for the track which starred George Wendt and Macaulay Culkin as a warring father and son, a cast of hundreds of tribal dancers and of course the multicultural stars whose faces were all morphed into each other at the end of the song. More notorious was the post-song sequence which saw Michael Jackson smash windows, dance on cars, rub himself and finally turn into a panther - footage which the star himself excised from future airings after many complaints. When originally released the track gave him his first Number One single since 'I Just Can't Stop Loving You' four years earlier but this week creeps to a mere Number 18.

Three places below is 'Somebody's Watching Me' by dutch mixers Beatfreakz. Their hit single is a looping house version of an almost forgotten track that Rockwell took to Number 6 in February 1984 on the Motown records label. Although all claims of nepotism were denied, the artist was actually Kenneth William Gordy, son of Motown supremo Berry Gordy and the track is these days perhaps more famous for the fact that Jermaine and Michael Jackson provided backing vocals (Michael especially in evidence on the chorus). Ignored for ages, the track gains a new lease of life this week and topically enough takes the Jackson connection to a new level in the video - just check out the midget re-enactment of 'Thriller'.

Top 20 it seems is now beyond Michael Jackson as the latest dualdisc re-release 'Remember The Time' limps into the chart at a miserable Number 22. We can attribute this to the overall strength of the market, we can attribute this to boredom with the whole project or we can put the chart placing down to the fact that this is actually one of his weakest singles. One of the big problems with the 'Dangerous' album was that half of it consisted of a string of identikit Teddy Riley produced tracks that reduced Michael Jackson to an average swingbeat artist. On first listen the first five or six tracks just merge into one, all featuring the same groove and very little in the way of melody. 'Remember The Time' was one such track although in all fairness it did hit Number 3 as the second single to be released from the album in early 1992. What helped it along was the alarmingly expensive video set in ancient Egypt and which starred Eddie Murphy, Imam and even Magic Johnson. Second time around the single is little more than average. It bodes ill for the next few releases in the sequence, although there are at least a couple more classics still to come.

After dipping out of the Top 20 with last week's release, Michael Jackson fares a little better with his latest re-release 'In The Closet'. Sadly there isn't much to enthuse about here as like 'Remember The Time' the single was one of the sludge of Teddy Riley tracks that made up the first side of the 'Dangerous' album. Much speculation surrounded the identity of the female vocalist on the track which was credited to just "mystery girl" on the album sleeve. Naomi Campbell mimed the vocals in the video but it was later revealed to be none other than Princess Stephanie of Monaco, depping for Madonna who had backed out at the last minute.
