Music sales in post-holiday slump

PHIL GALLO

...

Being in the news had opposite effects on two performers: The married-for-a-day Britney Spears' "In the Zone" (Jive) dropped to No. 14 on sales of just under 70,000, while Michael Jackson's "Number Ones" (Epic) rose 27 spaces to No. 39 on sales of 38,000.

Note: Interesting how MTV News, Billboard, and E! Online all failed to mention this positive news in their weekly chart wrap ups.

I read on the peak positions that "One More Chance" had peaked on #21 in Sweden. But "One More Chance" has NOT been released commercial.

However, the #5 peak positions for airplay in Sweden is correct...

As predicted, the album bullets this week on the Billboard 200. This is the second time 'Number Ones' has achieved a bullet designation on that chart.

Forgot to mention that it looks like the CBS Special had a postive effect on sales of the "OMC" single. I guess airing the song at the end of the special made a few people go out and buy the single on Saturday/Sunday.

This is not really significant since single sales are very low right now, however, it's good news nonetheless.

Question for USA MJ fans: Is the "OMC" single only available as a maxi single and 12" vinyl single? In other words, a regular CD single wasn't issued by Epic, correct?

No probs Amit.. sorry about not mentioning which country I was talking about earlier... this means that Number Ones is now at a new peak position at #8 from it's debut #9. I wonder if anyone has the numbers for the weeks of #2-5?

For your question amit.. for what I know One More Chance was released as digital download @ iTunes / SonyMusicStore, a 5 track CD single and a 12" vinyl for the US in particular. So pretty much US released one version of One More Chance as a CD single with 5 tracks and so far sells look well overall. I haven't seen the 12" vinyl in stores though but have seen it online through the Tower Records website.

Keep up the great work!

Hey Everyone!

Is someone able to explain how the Billboard Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart works?

This week, MJ jumped to #39 on the Billboard 200, ahead of Kelis's "Tasty," which is at #42.

However, on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart, "Tasty" is at #13, and MJ is no where to be seen? I thought these charts were based on sales?

Tbe Billboard Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart is based on sales in recordstores that are considered a part of a R&B/Hip Hop panel. These are stores where R&B/Hip Hop leaning music make up the majority of the sales.

So a store in Boise, Idaho, where 80% of the records sold are rock-records, don't count towards the Billboard Top R&B/Hip Hop albums...
