I'm aware that this is a 15-year-old thread, but I don't see how one song sounding like another means that there's a direct inspiration at play. Two artists can have the same/similar ideas and not have a clue that the idea was used and released by another.

Plagiarism still applies to accidentally same or similar songs (in terms of melody).
That is why, artists should use music recognition software/tools, or plagiarism detection software/tools, or even should consult legal experts in music before the release of their new songs.

thank you. I was about to type the same thing. some of these similarities could be mere coincidence. I feel that they’re putting words in michael’s mouth, and discrediting his abilities as a writer/composer.
