Moonwalker appreciation thread

'Moonwalker' was not really a film, but an extended promotional video for his 'BAD' album.

Also, it has a non-linear narrative which creates some sort of confusion to the viewers.

It is also a film aimed mainly for kids due to its cartoonish feel (shallow plot, exaggerated and fast-paced acting, many comic dialogues, etc).

Yet, there are some really interesting moments in that.

For example, fans get to hear the full version of the 'Smooth Criminal' song (and the song lyrically makes more sense with its full lyrics).

The 'Smooth Criminal' video segment is also well-crafted.

Additionally, it features the 'Leave Me Alone' music video which visually was one of his most-elaborate music videos that Michael Jackson has ever made and released.

Yes but it was suppose to be very experimental and even though it may have been a promotional video it is still quite a masterpiece in my opinion because I love how it just gives you shots of awesomeness, fun and Michaelness in general despite being quite random, and the extended video segment is great. But this is just my opinion:D

While my mom grew up with the Jackson's it was seeing the Moonwalker VHS in the store that changed my life. I was 4yrs old, the cover caught my attention and asked my mom "who's that?" She explained it was Michael Jackson and asked if I'd like to have it.

I don't get the movie! I was totally confused about what is going on, sometimes Michael becomes a car, the robot, then airship. Why was the villain after him? And what was the beginning all about? Why is Bad played by kids acting like grown ups? So many questions 😂 Maybe it's too deep for me to understand.

That does not mean I did not like it, there is extended version of Smooth criminal, there is Come Together  and there is Michael 💕, what's not to like, but it's no Ghosts 👻.

So the fact that he is dancing with an animated bunny is not weird to you?

It's a weird movie - but as a promotional tool for BAD it was/is genius. Imagine creating one movie and incorporating so many short films (musicvideos) into the film. It's amazing.

Seen as a movie - the storyline etc. is weird. It was a great project in the BAD era and shows how larger than life MJ was during that period.

Yes, seen in isolation, each short film and narrative surrounding it makes sense, especially the long Smooth criminal, except Bad, don't know what's the deal with having a kid play that. But out together into a movie makes no sense :)
Only the last part has a slightly SciFi movieish feeling where Michael turns into a robot, then spaceship, then come back to earth. Though that scene followed by come together again makes no sense 🤣. Not that I would trade come together for anything else ;)

I have only seen Moonwalker once and I enjoyed it. Sure the plot is a bit all over the place, but it was nice to see MJ experiment a bit with his art. And like someone said, without Moonwalker, we wouldn’t have got the music videos for Smooth Criminal, Speed Demon, Come Together, Leave Me Alone, so I love Moonwalker.

Were those short films made FOR Moonwalker? I thought they just got put together into the movie.

This is going to ruin my day, I already know this. I've already cried buckets and I only came across it a few minutes ago.

If I meet someone who doesn't seem to understand Michael, I would play this. I don't think I need anything else.

Cross-posting.

The end sequence of Moonwalker. 2m 20s

I guess it's more 'Family Entertainment' than a kids movie. Basically what MJ aimed for with everything he did; exciting, emotional, adventerous, spooky etc.; yet nothing that would actually scare or insult anyone on earth. It's very difficult since it's almost impossible to make something substantial that everyone likes or not offence. The most famous people that pulled this off (sorta) were also his inspirations: Walt Disney, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, P.T. Barnum etc.

During a visit to Brazil for shows with tribute artist Rodrigo Teaser , guitarist Jennifer Batten , who accompanied Michael Jackson on three world tours, made unprecedented revelations about the backstage of the King of Pop. The revelations were made during the podcast Intelligence Ltda, presented by Rogério Vilela.

Among the many curiosities shared, one of the most intriguing was the legend about why Michael wore two different outfits in the video for “ Come Together ” from the film Moonwalker . While the official version shows Michael wearing a yellow shirt, he also filmed a scene wearing the silver Bad tour costume.

Jennifer revealed that they spent two days recording, with the first day recording “Another Part Of Me” and the second day “ Come Together ”. The images from “Another Part Of Me” remain unreleased to this day. - source: MJBeats

So, instead of Come Together, the movie could have closed with a performance of Another Part of Me?

*calls skipper skipper he's in the woods over here *

love it ! i'll come back :)

Saw it twice in the cinema the year it came out. Absolutely unforgettable moments.
Same! Although I only saw it once in the cinema, it was yet another life changing moment from MJ.

Man In The Mirror on the big screen was truly transcendent. It made the hair on my body stand on end for the entire performance.

Moonwalker is a big bag of magical nostalgia, wrapped in colour and dance, sprinkled with glittery greatness and presented in visual delight.
