Prince Appreciation Thread - For Fans

This is spot on. I’m really itching to aim a dig at Michael but I won’t because I’m in a good mood
I had exactly the same reaction. I don't wanna take pot shots at darling Michael but, fgs! This is the third time this week, f&m. I watched an old clip of Madonna from her Madame X era. Some American chat show. Jimmy Fallon? Anyway, I had forgotten that she did a tour in theatre venues. He tried to make a big deal out of it but she quite sensibly pointed out that she's done the stadium thing and she wanted to try something different. I can't remember anything about that tour, I mostly ignore Madonna as an artist, but good on her for mixing it up.

Earlier this week I was bingeing on Kylie Minogue interviews. She's got a residency at Las Vegas coming up in November. I think the show itself will be blingy and OTT bc she loves all that 'showgirl' stuff. But she's capped the audience at 1,000 and the set-up, as she explained it, sounds quite intimate.

Madonna and Kylie did it. Michael absolutely could have done anything he wanted including this type of thing. So frustrating. He had the voice. He had the charisma, the stage presence. He had the back catalogue. He had a huge fan base.

Sigh.

I will agree with this.
Prince was a creative, eccentric and competitive genius. Win or lose, he did it his way.

You’re posting tons here, I thought you weren’t much into Prince? So either I misunderstood or you changed your opinion?
I started posting stuff last October and thought by now I had about 10 -12 songs but I skipped through the thread and it's much less than that. Only about half an album's worth, lol. The stuff I've posted lately has been mostly interview clips. I LOVE interviews with artists. Even if it's an artist that I'm lukewarm about. Don't know why but I can't get enough of interviews, especially if they are on YT.

The other weird thing is, people go on and on about Prince only doing interviews very, very rarely and yet there's loads of little clips on YT. He did more than Michael, that's for sure. I wish I had as many clips of Michael talking.

So, my opinion on Prince? It hasn't changed that much, tbh. I'm quite lukewarm about a lot of it - his outfits, his guitar playing, his Camille voice (actually, I hate the Camille voice), a lot of his 80's output, his dancing, his physicality, him trying to be sexy. A lot of live performances I've checked out leave me cold. Superbowl, Coachella. Claims that he is a feminist have not convinced me. Don't wanna get into it, far too complicated, but the jury's out on that one. For me, at least.

Stuff that I like? Him at the piano, him being bluesy / jazzy / gospell-y, him playing as backing musician to Chaka Khan, George Clinton, etc. When he's not in the spotlight but is just being a musician he's much more interesting to me. I like his lower pitched voice. I love his difficult songs even if I can't listen to them very often bc they are so wrenching - SOTT, Papa. That type of thing. Although I mostly don't like him live, when he's good he's very, very good. His staging is often immaculate. I've said it before, he really understands the space and uses it so well. He has an easier time of it than Michael bc he's usually in arenas rather than stadiums but he still shows mad skills in understanding how to put a show together. His handling of the media is immaculate, imo. He annoys the fk out of me, or leaves me coldly indifferent, but the brain on the man intrigues me. That's why I like the interviews. Somehow, in spite of being asked the same questions over and over and being required to mostly give the same old answers, he manages to do it with charm, wit, intelligence, patience and also manages to say something new and different each time.

I don't like his guitar work all that much but on the live version of Creep it's excellent. Ditto him onstage with Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Steve Winwood when they were honouring George Harrison.

As someone who embodies / epitomises Black musical / literary heritage he is irresistible. I'm also fascinated by the parallels between him and Michael and the ways in which they are so very, very different.

I do love the way he'll throw out a musical reference - Angie Stone, for example - that most other people just wouldn't.

OK, mini essay over. That's probably TMI but you did ask, lol. :D

I'm probably really late to the game but i have just ... scene the outtakes to GB and i am....o_O

That’s a nice comprehensive post. Just 1 more question. What do you consider his “difficult” music? I know you gave 2 examples but you were too lazy to type out the full song titles 😉
SOTT = Sign O' The Times. The song not the album. I think it's a masterpiece but, man, it's SO bleak so I can only listen to it very, very sporadically. More or less not at all, really. I'm glad the song is in the world. I think we need that kind of commentary. The video is crap but I don't know what else they could do, really. They could hardly do a 'story' video for those lyrics.

Papa is the full title of the song. It's even better than SOTT, imo. Stunning song. Fabulous structure. So exciting. Lots of different stuff going on. But, again, SO bleak. Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. Tight, concise, clever lyrics. Brilliant storytelling. Great example of 'less is more'. But, jeez, so depressing. I've listened to it twice. That'll probably do me for the rest of this year.

That'll have to do for now. Busy posting photos of Miley Cyrus, lol.

posting my Dark Gemini Genius 🖤 🔒

  • Intelligent: Geminis are generally highly intelligent, both intellectually and emotionally. ...
  • Adaptable: Geminis are a go-with-the-flow type. ...
  • Entertaining: Boring, Geminis are not. ...
  • Eloquent: Be they written or spoken words, Geminis tend to have a way with them.

Hmm papa ends super abruptly. I think one listen is enough for me, not my cup of tea, at least SOTT manages to be catchy as well as being a song with a message.
I’m sticking to party Prince and his 1999 album 😎

Hmm papa ends super abruptly.
That's one of the things I love about it. Some of Prince's fans have issues with 'Papa'. Some people think it should be two (or three!) different songs. I disagree but I can see their point. I love the structure of the song and the abrupt ending is wild.

Fair enough.

at least SOTT manages to be catchy
It is. Musically, that song is brilliant.

as well as being a song with a message.

I find party Prince a bit irritating and a bit boring, tbh. Don't like the sound, don't like the clothes, don't like his hair. But then he'll tie his hair back into a scruffy pony tail, sit down at the piano and do some sublime jazzy / bluesy thing and all is forgiven.
