Hello, I just registered to the forum and noticed a mistake in the registration form.

Security question asks "How many Grammys Did MJ win for Thriller?" but the expected answer is wrong.
Firstly, because one of the grammies was for the E.T. Storybook and not for Thriller.
Secondly: One of the grammies was actually for Quincy Jones as producer, and since Quincy Jones produced both Thriller and the E.T. Storybook, this one can be ambiguous.

Thanks for letting us know, I have now changed it to the below.

How many Grammys Did MJ win at the 26th GRAMMY Awards in 1984?

Either way the Thriller album has won 8 Grammys on that night.

Now that you mention it...
According to https://www.grammy.com/grammys/artists/michael-jackson/13202
6 Grammys in 1983 * directly related to thriller.
1 Grammy in 1983 * for the producer (and I find ambiguous because the Grammy site doesn't mention that it is precisely for Thriller or for multiple works), but I know that it is usually counted as a Thriller Grammy.**
+ 1 Grammy in 1984 * for the making of Thriller.

That's 6+1?+1 = 8?

So the initial question and answer could actually be considered correct, depending on how things are interpreted.

* Another thing that I find misleading is that the Grammy site list Grammys rewarded in February 1984 under title 26TH ANNUAL GRAMMY AWARDS (1983), while Grammy for 27TH ANNUAL GRAMMY AWARDS (1984) were indeed rewarded in February 1985.
** The answer may be in video footage at the moment the Grammy is awarded (I don't have to check it for now)

It has won:

  • Album of the Year (Thriller)
  • Record of the year (Beat It)
  • Best R&B song (Billie Jean)
  • Best pop vocal performance, male (Thriller)
  • Best pop rock vocal performance, male (Beat It)
  • Best R&B vocal performance, male (Billie Jean)
  • Producer of the year, non-classical (MJ & Q)
  • Best engineered recording, non-classical (Thriller, Bruce Swedien)

Right, this one is on Bruce Swedien's page: https://www.grammy.com/grammys/artists/bruce-swedien/14319

But then should Making of Thriller video award count ? Because then that would make 9. But 8 in 1984 (for year 1983).

So I think the current question/answer is correct too.

But that makes a lot questions that one may ask when filling the registration form :)

The Making of video was a standalone release, so it doesn't count to the Thriller album.

wow. we making this into a big thing. i had no problem with the question. he won 8 when you count E.T storybook.

Regardless this forums security question, the main focus was always the album itself and its 8 Grammys rather than MJs 7+1 Grammys.

Even 2001s special edition of Thriller is pointing this out on its cover.

Michael won 7 grammys but 8 when you count e.t storybook. so yes. he won 8 grammys in all. but for thriller he won 7.
