Remember What I Told You

Can't see many threads on this song (which is kind of unbelievable actually), and this was the most recent one I found.

Does anyone have any thoughts on why Michael is singing "please, let me go" towards the end? The song itself sounds eerily like a valediction to me, and has me a little confused. Why would someone (especially him) sing such, considering his state and health in 08/09?

I love it, even in its unfinished state. Just beautiful. I do wish he pulled back a bit on the Melodyne though; it’s way too robotic, though maybe that’s just because we’re so accustomed to hearing his voice in its natural state.

I love it too, I don’t really mind the melodyne on this one.

Agreed with the melodyne and/or autotune. Seems like few of his later years vocals were processed like this even by default? On top of my head, I recall BOJ, IAAL, Remember, HMH (very litte). Probably a few more, but the amount isn't that big. It's mostly in demos as well

I don't listen to many unreleased tracks, but remember what I told you is so interesting sounding, and kind of haunting.

It totally reminds me of Titanic, which is one of my favourite movies, so when I start listening I am immediately in a melancholic state of mind 🫠. And then the lyrics on top... can't listen to it very often...

I re-listened to it and you’re right, it isn’t as intense as my initial impression. “I Was the Loser” is a worse offender there lol
Yeah that one has it much more

🤖🤖🤖I was the loser🤖🤖🤖

I think The Loser might be one of those tracks we could see release on an album or something else. I’m really interested to see if they keep the melodyne if they release it. Would also like to know what Buxer and Prince thought of the melodyne and what they prefer.

I think it’s a bit overdone on that one, but it could work better if it was done better

I still don’t know which lyric I prefere tho, I am or I was the loser. I kinda like them both. Maybe they could use both although that likely won’t happen. E.g. I am in the first choruses and switching to I was near the ending or something to make it more uplifting, or the other way around to make it more sad (just a thought I had while writing this post, I don’t really have a preference/side or anything).

Going a bit off-topic tho lol sorry

Could you please explain to me how you can hear Melodyne in RWITY? I don't know what to listen for.

Sure! I’m far from an expert, and it’s more subtle on this track than I initially thought, but when you listen to MJ’s vibrato at the end of each line, there’s a very, very slight digital 8-bit effect. It’s most audible at the end of the first line: “And remember what I told youuuuuuu…

Melodyne can be tricky to hear because most producers will work very surgically to preserve the human quality of the voice, but it seems like MJ and MP/BB were experimenting and really pushing it to its limits. It’s far more obvious in “I Was the Loser,” where half the lines sound Auto-Tuned.

I've commented on this in other threads but this track really made me feel amazed like MJ's stuff used to. The vocals towards the end are amazing, it's unfinished but somehow doesn't seem like it to me.

It sounds like something that could have been an interlude or intro.

Of course it's just my imagination going lol.

But that's what MJ liked to do, to push it sonically. So maybe this was a choice by michael or it could be a producer thinking, "everyone is getting used to processed vocals, if they hear unprocessed vocals would they be put off?"

Even bringing the vocals into Melodyne, you can see the Youuuuu highlighted red. It's -9 on a D flat 4. So it's not like they were perfectly lining hm up, but they may have pushed the drift to make it slightly more even, or bring notes in key.

I'm definitely not surprised that MJ was messing around with it. It was being used quite a lot by that point.
