The choreography in the “You Rock My World” music video

It was a pretty half-assed video and the dancing was nothing special, but that's what happens when you're over 40 and past your prime. The video didn't need to be amazing; it got people talking, which was enough.

It’s just her side of the story, we never got Paul Hunter’s explanation. MJ looked horrible in 2001, and the whole point of videos is to promote album sales.

That doesn't justify disrespecting and insulting someone about their appearance. Hunter deserved to be fired for what he said.

Besides, no one who was freaked out by MJ's face was buying his album, anyway.

The age isn't a defining factor.

Imho, none of Michael's videos/sf's are as spectacular as what he had delivered throughout the 80s. Everything post 80s couldn't recreate those previous magical moments.

He obviously couldn't move as well in his 40s as he could in his 20s. For someone dealing with painkiller dependency, he did fine.

In other words, he got worse as he got older and by the 2000s, it was curtains for him as a performer. All things considered, he did fine.

The last thing that video shoot needed was more chaos such as the director being fired. We might have ended up with a video like Cry was MJ wasn't even in it.

Hype Williams was going to direct it at first, but MJ didn't like his concept.

Smooth Criminal is the greatest music video of all time.

But Remember The Time is easily a very close second though. In some ways it’s aging the best of all his videos.

Stranger in Moscow is also very very good.

He was in perfect shape in 1999, whereas in 2001 nothing fits. But it has nothing to do with his age.

Exactly this concert is where he injures his back heavily.. conpare to the Seoul performance and see what happens when the elevated stage drops. It is widely known he battled back pains in the years after. You can immediately see something is wrong when MJ performed with nsync in 2001: he kept his back and neck quite stiff there..

it’s a shame we have so little of MJ performing throughout the 00s but he had a lot of shit going on and was pretty much semi-retired.

The 2002 performance of Dangerous again you could tell he was a bit stiffer than previously and literally blowing out his ass when the live vocal kicked in for a few secs.

The sidewalk in TII was extremely stiff and no longer resembled coolness and how slick it used to look during MJ’s younger days. I know people say it was just rehearsals etc but you could tell age had caught up with him.

Still very good for 50 I may add

Due to arthritis I'd say that really prevented the smoothness. In 'This is it', you can see he is always hurting in his hands, and during 'beat it', it looks like he hurts his knee when he jumps.

To be fair in 'One more chance' his dancing is proper fast and smooth!

I guess this shows the 'invincible' tour would never have got off the ground.

A bit off topic but I feel like he was intentionally trying different stuff during the TII rehearsals, even if I personally don't think it looked as good. Pain probably had something to do with it as well. I think he generally looked much smoother and energetic in the small amount of very early rehearsal footage we have. Would love to see more of that, along with any discussions about the show etc that were filmed.

YRMW was a good song, but not groundbreakingly innovative or particularly catchy. It was a solid, safe track. The video was the same. The problem was that the HIStory era had brought something completely different from MJ: breathtaking music and videos.

I think the headset mic he used frequently in This Is It is a big reason why he did songs so differently. When using it you kind of have to do something with your hands. Also he hadn't perfomed some songs in years so maybe he had forgotten things.

Why would age prevent him from doing the side walk smoothly though? I'd understand for certain moves like a kicking his legs high, or going down to his knees etc.

Because your body and joints stiffens up as you get older and you’ve still got to be pretty flexible to pull off the sidewalk.

It depends on the person and the body state/wear.. for instance: my sidewalk isn’t the same as it was 30 years ago. My lungs have problems (so did MJ’s), my joints hurt a little faster (he appeared to have early artritis according to autopsy report) and combined with some weight/muscle changes, things can make a lot of difference..

But still: if i warm up properly and prepare for dancing, i can sidewalk like in Yokohama 87.. im just not doing it everyday anymore. :)

Exactly!

At this is it he danced well like in old times compared to the 30th anniversary concerts

I think what made YRMW different from the Dangerous/ HIStory era was the lack of Disneyesque atmosphere (Gone Too Soon, Childhood). I think Michael was trying to be more relevant to the edgy music of the time (rap, hip hop). There were artists like Eminem and Missy Elliot making hard-hitting, ghetto-glamour hits. Hence why Michael dressed slightly “trendy” in the YRMW video (the bandana worn under his fedora - that was popular in 2001/2002. I remember wearing one as a teen 😵‍💫😅).
