Michael Jackson News for Feb 6, 2010:

It was only in theaters for a limited time, but Michael Jackson fans who missed the documentary "This Is It" the first time around now have a chance to see the late King of Pop's last performance on DVD. Chris Nashawaty of Entertainment Weekly magazine filed the following review.

When Michael Jackson died last June, the tabloids went to town dishing about how frail and sickly and tired he’d become in his final days. Basically, they implied that anyone close to him would have to be blind not to see that he was on death’s doorstep. Well, you’d never guess any of that after watching "This Is It," Kenny Ortega’s moving memorial to the King of Pop.
Cobbled together from countless hours of rehearsal footage for the huge string of comeback performances Jackson was planning to play in London, "This Is It" is a must for fans of the man behind Beat It and Thriller. After all, this is Jackson as many of us choose to remember him -- a tireless perfectionist hitting impossibly high falsetto notes and dancing onstage with Swiss-clock precision. If you’re looking for the darker story behind it all, you won’t find it. Instead, what you’ll get is Jackson going through his old hits, fine-tuning the choreography, obsessing over details only he can see, and basically giving a tutorial in the nuts and bolts of what it takes to be a star for 40 years.
It’s amazing to watch him work at what always seemed so effortless from the outside. When "This Is It" came out in theaters in October, it only played for a limited time. So if you missed it in the first few weeks, you were out of luck. Looking at the new DVD, though, maybe missing it then wasn’t such a bad idea because the disc has more than 100 minutes of extras that weren’t there the first time around. You get a glimpse at all of the spangled, bedazzled-to-death costumes Jackson was planning to wear onstage, a peek at the video for Smooth Criminal that was going to be shown behind him onstage, which splices the King of Pop into old film clips opposite Humphrey Bogart and Rita Hayworth, and best of all, a Chorus Line-esque glimpse at the grueling tryouts to be one of Jackson’s back-up dancers. It’s an intimate, albeit rosy, last look at a music legend.
Now for a look at what else is new on DVD: in "Zombieland," Woody Harrelson battles with the undead; in "More Than a Game," a documentary takes a look at LeBron James’ high school days; and in "A Serious Man," the Coen brothers direct a dark comedy about a suburban schmo.

The makers of a 12ft Michael Jackson statue want to donate it to his family to put on display at Neverland Ranch.

The 3.5-ton black granite memorial was sculpted in Kancheepuram, India, out of a single rock from the Kanakapura mines by six craftsmen in about 45 days.

The Jackson statue is being displayed at Stona 2010: Ninth International Granites and Stone Fair in Bengaluru, India, and is attracting large crowds.

The makers, an India-based granite firm, have now written to the King of Pop's family and offered them the statue.
The firm believes it should be displayed at Neverland Ranch, which was the singer's home from 1988 to 2005.
