The Discussion of MJ's Unreleased Tracks

This thread is back open!

iirc he just said they're looking for one or two unreleased songs they could add to the ost.

Would be cool, if they'd choose the supposedly finished 2006/7 mix of DBMR.
I love the idea that there might be a finished mix of DBMR, there's something about the vibe of that song that is so unique.

I wonder what more Mike would have done to the track? Instrumentally I think the Bad era version is great, it just needed some finished lyrics.

Honestly, idk what to expect. Since Bruce Swedien spoke highly of DBMR, I assume it's worth the praise.

If all they release is only 2 songs then I'd rather it be songs that have't been heard before in any way. Other versions of songs that have already been released should go to collection albums if the Estate ever makes those. It would be very cool if the Estate were to release all the alternative versions of Best Of Joy, DBMR, Hollywood Tonight, Much Too Soon, etc. that way.

So which songs based on the information we have could be realistically possible for the Soundtrack release?
(Weight and Chicago for example don't think that are suitable)

How people can be clamoring for songs that are already officially released is beyond me.
I remember the meltdown over Thriller40th when the bonus material was announced.

I do understand (and especially in the case of "Price Of Fame" because it's one of the best & meaningful unreleased songs) that some of those great outtakes were buried within these anniversary collections, instead of having some of them as a single (POF) from an album of unreleased material. But that train has passed. The cat is already out of the bag. The genie is out the bottle & you can't cram it back in.
It comes down to misinformed decision making by the estate, which is their virtue.

But I would always vote for truly unreleased material. We already have to live with the leaks and can't expect that they are not releasing leaked stuff (it's on us if we choose to listen to leaks).
But to outright advertise for the release of songs that are already officially out there is counterproductive to say the least.
It's like wishing for "Thriller 45th", "Thriller 47 1/2th" & "Thriller 50th" ...

As much as I'd like for there to be some new song for the fans, being fr I don't see any unreleased songs (excluding already released outtakes) appearing in this biopic. If anything I think some new live mixes would make it but really I only see the soundtrack being the hits as biopic soundtracks usually are. MJ's had around 30 of these between 1979-1993 alone, just about enough for the movie + they'd probably throw like 2-3 J5 songs in there.
If we were to get something new it'd probably be a release on its own after the biopic is already out.

One thing I could see happening is some unreleased song or two being shown worked on in the film, and released on OST with Jaafar on vocals. It would mean hype for original versions to be released, concurrently or in the ensuing year. Especially single releases may need audience build up: audiovisual connection, story around the song etc, maybe even new dance steps...

If done respectfully, this is possibly the closest to the short film events of MJ possible nowadays and it could be sensational

I don't doubt that there will be at least 1 unreleased track. However, there's not much left that I could realistically see the estate using.

I think they'll include something unheard. I think it's much more likely to be some demos or alternate versions of already released material, though.

Which do you guys prefer? Unreleased demos being put out or having someone finish the song?

I prefer the demo because even if it isn't exactly how MJ would have completed it, it's the closest thing we have to his vision for the song. I don't like other people interpreting his work.

I thought Xscape was a good idea giving people both options, though.

Definitely releasing the last version MJ worked on. I don't mind remix projects if they are marketed as such, but releasing other people's work and presenting it as MJ songs is something I'm not that interested in. The demos on Xscape were also horrid when it comes to sound quality and some of them were the most primitive versions with later and better versions existing but not included for whatever reason.

If we need to have people finish the songs, then it should at the very least be the people who originally worked on them with him. I am not a big fan of the Xscape remix for example, but that was Rodney's song and he did what he wanted to do with it when he remixed it for the album.

Of course this is unfortunately becoming less and less likely of a possibility of being a reality. Just release the demos then, I'd prefer that, anyway.

I agree. Let us hear the demos. The estate is so stingey with new music 🙄

The only 2 songs from the Michael album that I'll listen to are Hold My Hand and I Can't Make It Another Day because the collaborators finished the songs. The rest I skip. I don't need to hear Neff-U's take on an MJ demo.
