The Discussion of MJ's Unreleased Tracks

My point would be that if you have the excessive need to tamper with/alter the original material for whatever reasons, be it artistic or creative imperfections (such as a severely incomplete/unfinished track) or because you're not allowed to share the material simply because you've been strictly asked not to, I guess it would be better to not share anything at all, especially in the first case (although I'm certain 99% of these modifications happen due to the latter). Stuff like that does disservice to the song and basically ruins MJ's original vision. If all I could get is a 'reconstruction' using AI-filtered samples or an authentic track butchered with AI vocals and other 'enhancements' then I'd rather stick to a seminar recording (which, of course, is of lower quality, but on the other hand is fully authentic).

It's just about being petty, really. Making sure you keep having the HQ while any leaks are LQ and screwed.

Exactly. It's an ego thing, but I very much think that when you already leak something in some form (be it a 1-second snippet (lmao) or a LQ/altered copy) it already loses it value to you because lots of people are going to hear it and create an overall image of how the whole track sounds like. As ChanceToDance said earlier, TYLA has been 'leaking' ever since 2020, and we never got an actual HQ copy of the full track, only bits and snippets of various modified copies which only divide the fandom in half. The track loses all its value to me at that point.

Exactly. I fail to see the logic why these people think slight/minor upgrades have any value to them. We're not talking about a cassette copy and a master copy, just a few digital conversions.

There's no way. The mixing is just jarring. The 1986 demo is much more polished, how can a mix that almost made it to the record be so half-arsed?
That's the funny thing. Since they keep messing around with this material before leaking it we have no idea, could fairly easily be made by a fan OR could be a quick mixdown concept. Personally I believe it is legit.

No sane engineer would make such mix. There're many things that sound not right.
Let's be honest, none of the in-production mixes done for BAD, be it pre-production or during production, really hold up to snuff when compared to the released mixes of the final album. This could very well be a situation where the final mix (for the whole album, not Streetwalker) wasn't completed until after the 8-12-87 tape. Failing that, it's possible this could be from an earlier mixdown tape.

Ooooh but when I say "this mix sounds like ass and there's no way anyone in MJ's team made this" everyone jumps and says "nah bruv this is 100% real, in fact it is currently my favorite version of streetwalker, btw the grandmother of a friend of my cousin's owns the tape containing it + tomboy"

I can tell you 100% that Streetwalker 87 mix is real and i was shocked when i heard the song not just because of the quality but because of the sound of the DAT tape it sounds like it was mixed in someone ass

And i decided to leak the track because first it deserve to be heard and second it have unheard Vocals too and AI fucked up everything because of this everyone was thinking it was fake just like MIB but they are both real

Tomboy is instrumental from "Zapp - Stop That" or not?

Could be a quick DAT to bring home they made after a session without really polishing the mix, I highly doubt this is a final mix or anything like it.
Sounds nothing like a DAT to me. I’m certain this is a cassette mix where the hiss was filtered out and that ruined the track.
Probably a copy of another cassette copy and so on (multiple generations).

I don’t think it is so much the mixing of it but the sound quality. You can hear tape hiss at the start but that is filtered out during the main track. Not to mention that it probably went through multiple copies…
Tape hiss is more significant on cassette than DAT. And the ‘86 version is much better quality because that’s a DAT copy of a (likely) first-gen cassette.

If I were them, I would have left the tape hiss in and kept the track intact.

That’s also because doctored snippets of MIB were shared first (by the catfish producer) and both of you were passing it off as the real thing. Which none of us bought because it obviously was doctored or fake.

It is ironic of you to say that since AI was obviously used for those first snippets. Even to generate vocals that were never there in the first place, and grainy sounding instruments…

If you (and Kai) had been HONEST with us from the start that those early snippets were doctored or fake, then this wouldn’t have got so heated like it did. Alongside all this AI stuff coming in.

Now I’ve heard both tracks, they sound like the real deal. Would have been best not to mess with those tracks in the first place!

The '86 demo comes from a cassette "owned" by Brad. There were pics of the inlets of various cassettes within the leak files and you could see the SW one there.
