There may be a more complete version that the estate may not be letting everyone in on (like with Blue Gangsta for instance, that final version leaked before the release of Xscape). That applies for any vault song. But we have what we have, and maybe that is really all that Michael recorded vocally for the song.

You would need to have the privilege to access the vault tapes and track sheets to determine if more vocal takes exist that were done after the original 28 or so passes were compiled.
Michael would never do 28 or so lead vocal passes unless it was destined by him as a finished song.

If he did more vocal takes, they would have re-compiled the lead vocal take with those new takes and made a mix of it anyway.

I never said that there are later-recorded sessions, I said he would‘ve recorded it again after the song was completed.

Well, there is a small possibility he might have re-recorded it later if he changed his mind and wanted something different eventually, or if he considered it for a later album like Invincible if I recall right.
Same with any other vault song that Michael once considered including on an album or revisited several times… Like Streetwalker, Don’t Be Messin, SPYHO, Dangerous (after Bill’s version).

By that same logic, the released original version STTR could have been re-recorded from another previous version. But all we have is the version we have.
 
I’m just wondering what made MJ sing Slave to the Rhythm 24 times in a row, knock out World of Candy and I Am A Loser in basically a day, then never record a single note of Shut Up and Dance.

But @Pentum is right, it’s ultimately a form of feverish yearning for more vocals on here, just presented in the most eloquent form I and others can Muster.

Because if Michael liked the song, he'd record it. Those other songs where "Michael was going to record it" was a way for him to let people down easy and pass on it

I dont think so, even if he never recorded Shut up and dance, the song was on his to-do list in 2009. So he definitely wouldnt have passed on it imo

But he did this with his own songs pretty often. Like Changes.

Also he turned down plenty of songs, i.e everything Pharrell had for him.

He turned down songs because he probably either heard himself in the songs too much - as with the Pharrell songs - or did not hear himself doing those songs. Like with “Willing and Waiting” that Babyface wrote.

As for his own songs, there is only so many of them Michael could work on at the same time, so certain songs took priority over others.
