Are you sure they are cognates?

‘brood’ = ‘bröd’ = ‘bread’?
 
‘Smultron’ is a very old word, from Old Swedish, attested from the 13th century but most probably considerably older. Etymologically, it is likely from ‘smulter’ (“loose”) with our aforementioned “berry-suffix” ‘-on’.

Ik eet pannenkoeken = I eat pancakes
Ik smul pannekoeken = means the same but using smullen emphasizes how much you’re enjoying it.
As far as I know there is no english word for “smullen”
