This Is It costumes: Cool or Tacky?

Edits of him from 97 wearing the TII stuff.
I'd assume it would look better in 1997 because he was at a heavier weight but overall, the TII outfits weren't that great. Maybe they would've looked better in motion but we'll never know.

I repeat myself:

I think some of them were neat, at least for 2009, some were incredibly garish and Unpleasant to the eyes. None would have aged particularly well except for the redesigned classics (Billie Jean, Beat It, Thriller).

Here's one random edit

I'm sure there are some outfits he wore that you didn't like.
It's irrelevant. He wore what he liked. That's the point. We don't need to have an opinion on it, is my point. He has been judged since he was little and it never stops.

I mean we're still entitled to an opinion. The outfits could be covered in pure 24k gold but it doesn't mean it looks good.

As Quincy once said, "you can't polish doo-doo"
But are we? Opinions are what destroyed him. People thinking they can judge what someone else does. Entitled sounds about right.

You probably like all of his songs, videos and tours too because we don't need to have an opinion. He made what he liked. :D

We are on a forum.

The costumes he wore at rehearsals looked better tbh.

I'm pretty sure you've seen the "The Gloved One" mini-documentary on the This Is It special features which glossed upon the outfits he was going to wear for TII. To say the least, they're pretty interesting....The mini-doc didn't go over each individual outfit for each song, but you had the idea that things were going to be way different than what they were for the Bad, Dangerous, and HIStory tours. For the first time, Michael was actually going to be changing his full costume from song to song as opposed to just changing his jacket and keeping the basis from other costumes (i.e wearing the Smooth Criminal blazer with the golden leotard or the golden spacesuit pants.)

Some of the costumes I liked...some I think were just way too tacky.

1. The Light Man suit: Okay, I think it looks really cool up close, but here's the problem. Zaldy REALLY over-did it with the crystals and all of these reflective surfaces mixed with bright stage lights would have been absolutely BLINDING. Hell, I can even imagine the reaction "MICHAEL!!! OH MY GOD MICHAEL!!! Wait...which bright, indiscernible blur is Michael?"
I’m actually impressed by the Light Man Suit. Yes, it has a lot of crystals but that’s the point - it was Michael’s comeback to the stage and he was going on it like a true star/ entertainer. I think it’s a beautiful suit, and remember, the fashion of 2009 was futuristic/ full on (think of Lady Gaga, The Black Eyed Peas and Rihanna).

I would predict had Mike been able to do the first few shows he would have changed most of those costumes. Most of them were too heavy and rigid to perform in. I think he would have had Michael Bush working on back ups.

I can imagine him attending award shows or dinners wearing them, but not performing in them

The Billie Jean outfit, Thriller jacket and J5 Medley suit were cool

That is exactly what came across in TII for me too.
Most of them were too heavy and rigid to perform in.
Really agree here.

Me too. On what we did see I was not too armoured by Zaldy jacket concepts, (particularly the shoulder pad direction)...though I loved on those blue and silver satiny shirts decisions.
I can imagine him attending award shows or dinners wearing them,
Not sure. I couldn't see him being very happy in that black slash stark white collar exaggerated shoulder padded Zaldy jacket or maybe I wasn't happy seeing him in it. ..Maybe i wasn't even seeing it. I still don't like it.
but not performing in them
A question to ponder for me.
The Billie Jean outfit, Thriller jacket and J5 Medley suit were cool
He just didn't understand those exaggerated shoulder pads it always seemed to me.

Anyone else feel that? He even mentioned "I'll just button up my shirt, jacket or whatever it is " ... So, that always stuck with me, but I didn't properly gel with (what we saw ) from Zaldy from the get go even before he said that...
I remember this line very clearly indeed since it was the only time I smiled during that movie.

Years later , I finally warmed to the red leather jacket. I loved the blue satin looking shirt he wore for CA birthday months before...and I post that shirt all the time.

But the black one, well ...not so much that it is Zaldy's work ..that's the situation and how it all ended. .I think this is a really hard question and it can never really be answered since we didn't see it fully to judge....and i cannot put all emotions aside here to make that decision.

I really miss him. Anything TII is delicate .... TTI leaves scars...so much so, I'll avoid it when I can. 15 years on and , It's still broken hearted material for many. So, were the costumes cool or tacky?....I'll be bordering on just observing this thread here. cause it's all painful for sure.

And they still looked better
Not all of them. The silver jacket orange pants haunts me.

I do like his fits otherwise
Someone said that to me before and I said "bro those were his casual outfits"
I think he approached the rehearsals even with a little more formality than the usual. His usual style was much more laid back. Or maybe he changed his taste in the last decade? It makes for a very presentable appearance overall.
