Thoughts and opinions (not too deep) on my favorite Michael Jackson songs

I'm sure this is on the board somewhere but I need to place it here with all the other stuff.

I had only been on the board for a couple of weeks or so when I came across the recommendation from @filmandmusic for this performance. It led me to the full J5 Live in Mexico performance, obvs, but I still love this as a stand - alone thing. I think it is exquisite.

1m 43s - I love that leg slide. So much like the leg slide in Smooth Criminal. He does another one at approx 3m 23s.

Approx 2m 35s - I love his face in this little sequence. There is a magical microsecond where he makes eye contact with the camera and does a little smile. Slays me every time.

Beautiful vocal performance. ❤️

This one day in your life performance is even better imo, more reach, more confidence vocally because his voice had finally matured completely. Love the backing band here as well, lovely horns, the brothers bring some backing vocals too in this version. The sound quality is atrocious though, don’t listen on headphones. When all is said and done both this and the 1975 version are in my all time favorite live performances. The studio version is top 10 MJ for me.
1977 Venezuela
Also keep listening for “happy” after ODIYL. Lovely song. We really need more live Michael from the 70s. His voice was soothing.

Oh, I know this one already. You recommended it ages ago and I got onto it straightaway. Your recommendations are always awesome, ime. Love it. Especially love the silly little jokey bit at the beginning. I haven't watched this one as much as I should. I got derailed by BWT 1987 and Triumph and blah blah blah. Plus the quality of this one is duff so it's a bit hard work compared to Mexico 1975, for example, which is beautiful to watch. But this is great. It makes me smile every time.

I was getting confused with your note about 'Happy'. Earlier I was watching a clip of the Jacksons doing 'Think Happy' on a Dutch pop show. Fabulous stuff. Thought that's the one you meant. Then I realised you meant the song young Michael did which never got used for Lady Sings The Blues - and thank god for that. Terrible idea, imo, if they had used the song.

I agree, Michael's voice in the 1970's was so soothing. Well, I guess it always is soothing. 'Smile' springs to mind or 'Don't Walk Away'. But I know what you mean. There is a special quality to his voice at this time. There really is something quite amazing going on. And I love Michael's adult voice but, yeah, 70's Michael - I don't know what it is but there is magic in the air.

Update - just listened. Had forgotten how much I love this. I need to set aside more time for this. Completely agree with your comments.

@zinniabooklover regarding "happy" maybe you like it better in Smokey Robinson's version? He made it into a 7 minute song. First 3 min are pure ballad on piano then the pace picks up and other instruments come in. It is a lot better than MJ's album cut imo, I don't care much for that version.
Though I also really like how MJ does it live in Mexico and Venezuela mainly because of his vocals of course.

Oh, this sounds interesting. Smokey is my MAN. Love me some Smokey. I will check this out. Thanks for the info.

Although have just realised my comment about 'Happy' might have been misleading. I didn't mean the song is crap. I don't love it but it's decent enough. What I meant was, I don't think it would have been a good idea using that song for the Billie Holliday film. Just think it would have been a bad idea all round. Decent enough film but attaching a song by young Michael Jackson to that film? Bad idea, imo.

I'm monopolising your thread. I tried to be restrained and not post this one but have caved in. Gotta post it. Ever since I came across it I've been hopping up and down with excitement. I'm sure it's not new to anyone but me but, omg, I love it so much. The vocals are not live but the performance is great.

The YT link is working for me but, in case it doesn't, the vid is 'Michael Jackson & Jackson Five documentary - rare video footage'.

Audio cuts in and out for the last minute or so. 11m 6s but feels much longer. Really nice piece of footage.

my favourite performance of the song. everything is so crisp and clean. that’s also one of my, if not favourite song of theirs.

I like this performance too.
Oh, that was nice! Thanks so much for posting that. I love Soul Train and have been meaning to check that one out for a while now (we didn't get Soul Train in the UK so there's a lot of ST stuff I'm not caught up on) but keep on getting distracted by other stuff.

So glad I've now seen this performance. I love the way he goes down and back up the steps. Lots of lovely clear shots of Marlon and Jackie (essential for me, lol). The whole thing is awesome. I had forgotten how much I love this song. Not sure how that happened. 🤔

This was fab! 🥰

I wish ‘soul train’ aired here in the uk as well, but it was great growing up with ‘top of the pops’. I would also love to see that full performance of ‘looking through the windows’ someday. makes me feel proud that it was a hit here.

that same year they performed for the queen for the first time, at the royal variety show. have you seen this performance?

I feel that the early seventies (particularly 1972) was the first peak; there was the cartoon series, cereal commercials, an Oscar award performance and nomination for ‘Ben’, and the above performance. so many amazing milestones in a short amount of time.

my personal favourite era for Michael and the Jackson 5 is between 1969-1972 (for solo Michael, it’s obviously 1983). I also love some of the unreleased songs from that time.

Oh, I loved growing up with TOTP. I've said it already but it really did shape your whole week. That and the Sunday night chart rundown, those two things were non-negotiable, you HAD to be there! I'm the same age as Michael so I was watching TOTP pretty much from the start although we always preferred Ready Steady Go! because it was cooler and more edgy. Ngl, I didn't love everything about TOTP, a lot of the DJ's were boring. But half an hour of pop magic every week? Happy days!

As for Soul Train, I wish we had got it in the UK. We did see one episode in the mid-70's. The only thing I can remember about it - apart from being blown away by it - was Ashford & Simpson. They were great.

Yes, we watched this at the time although it's always really weird for me to see it in colour - we had a b&w tv. I have no idea *why* we always watched the Royal Variety Show but we did. The J5 being on there was awesome because you didn't get many Black performing artists on there. So it was a BIG deal. Ngl, I'm not that keen on the performance because I *really* don't like medleys. I would have been much happier with two complete songs. Of course, I understand why people do medleys but I really, really don't like 'em. Gah!

On Rare Pics the other day I just bumped this photo. It doesn't ring any bells for me. By the time I was a teenager we had pretty much stopped watching RVS so maybe I didn't see it. I need to chase this up, find out more.

Most of which I was unaware of at the time. We didn't get the cartoon series. I'm sure I would remember that. So few Black faces on UK tv back then. And a cartoon? Unheard of. The tv adverts, ditto. The Oscars? Oh, that's a bit annoying. We *did* used to watch the Oscars, most years at least, but I don't remember any J5/Jacksons involvement. More stuff for me to chase up.

Well, this is intriguing. Do I know about these? My homework assignments just keep on stacking up, lol. I'm going to be busy! :D
