So I know this thread isn't about MJ, but the way that MJ chose to bring up his children in certain aspects made me think there was some generational trauma being passed on. Of course I fully understand why MJ chose to parent the way he did, and this is no criticism of him as a parent. It just occurred to me that in trying to protect them he inadvertently repeated some themes from his own childhood, albeit for very different reasons.
MJ always spoke about how the conditions of his childhood prevented him from having normal experiences. Just as he didn't experience typical school, nor did his kids. Just as he didn't get to make friendships outside the family unit, nor did his kids. Just as he was overly protected as a child in certain respects, so were his kids. Just as he used disguises, so did his kids. Just as he was mostly separated from his mother growing up, so were his kids. Just as he had an overly controlling father, so did his kids.
And just to be clear, I am not comparing his horrific childhood to his children's, I know he gave them a wonderful childhood, but I think just as he seemed unprepared for reality at times, those kids were left unprepared for reality when he passed.
