I think it would be interesting if we could list some of the ventures and deals that fell through over time. I kind of only know about the Marvel deal.. What else is there? Did MJ pursue other publishing deals? What about movie deals?

Oh and I'm talking about ventures and deals that were almost etched in stone not ideas in the rudimentary stages.

MJ Universe. The closing line he was planning in 2003. His participation in the Canadian animation Pinocchio 3000.

Loads of movie deals. Actually, it would be great to collect them all in one place.
"Peter Pan" with Spielberg in 1990 and "Nightmares of Edgar Allan Poe" are the ones I remember off the top of my head. But there were many movies rumored over the years.

^He reportedly also considered a role in a film called 'Street Dandy' in the mid-eighties.

It wasn't a deal that fell through, but I remember Kenny Ortega mentioning that him and MJ had spoken briefly about doing the Legs Diamond story. Man that would have been cool. For anyone who doesn't know who Legs Diamond is

After the BAD tour, and while still working with Spielberg on the Peter Pan movie, he lobbied very hard for the lead role in "Edward Scissorhands", but apparently Tim Burton wanted to go with someone unknown. I think Michael would have been great in that. They didn't get Michael, but they ripped off some of Michael's public persona at that time as well as his "Bad" outfit for the character, I think.

He also was in talks with Andrew Lloyd Webber about playing the lead role in "Phantom of the Opera", (which would have been WONDERFUL) but ALW wasn't ready to do a movie with the play still going on at the time-he thought it would wreck sales.

There was also the "Frankie and Johnnie" film that he discussed with Gene Kelly and his wife, Patricia-that was just in development. And I read he was offered the part of the gay dancer in "A Chorus Line" movie, but he turned it down. That part was played by Greg Burge, who also played the Scarecrow in the Wiz after Hinton Battle, and helped with the choreography in the "BAD" video. (Not sure how true this story is, actually).

The Majestic Kingdom Casino in Detroit, unfortunately it was turned down by the Michigan voters in 1998.

Michael Jackson Casino Plans Blocked By Detroit Voters

by MTV News Staff 8/5/1998
On Tuesday, voters in Detroit gave the thumbs down to a referendum proposal to spend tax dollars to help build a $1 billion casino and theme park being promoted by singer Michael Jackson.

Jackson had made several visits to the area to drum up support for the project, in which he was involved with Detroit millionaire Don Barden.

Jackson announced his plans for what had been dubbed the Majestic Kingdom in early July at a Detroit press conference (see “Michael Jackson Plans Motor City Resort” ). At the time, Jackson said that he wanted the proposed theme park/casino/nightclub and restaurant complex to appeal to “the childlike heart that lives inside every man and woman.”

I think one of the movies he planned on doing was a remake of "The Seven Faces of Dr. Lao". He also had plans to build stuff in Japan, in particular a theme park (different from the one mentioned earlier?) and a toy store.

(skip to the 7:22 mark for the press conference where he mentions this)

Stan Lee also claimed in an interview that Michael was looking at buying Marvel Comics when it was for sale back in the early 2000's. That would've been interesting.

One other part that I just remembered goes way back-and for the life of me, I can't remember if I heard this interview on the radio or read it in print, but it goes back to the Wiz days and Michael told the interviewer that he was being considered for a part in the TV mini series "Roots." I remember he hadn't auditioned or anything, but his management was in talks.
I'm not sure if he was talking about "Roots" or the sequel, "Roots, the Next Generation" but that one came out in 79, I believe. Oddly enough, I watched it again on BET last year for the first time in years and years, and there was a very young man in it that I thought this would be a perfect part for Michael to play-
and the more I stared at this kid I realized it was Brian Stokes Mitchell, the big Broadway star. It must have been one of his first shows. :)

"EuroJackson", Family Entertainment Theme Park in Warsaw (Poland).

Michael Jackson & Mayor Mr. Marcin Swiecicki signed (May 1997) a "preliminary letter of intent" to develop a theme park in Warsaw (an area of more than 80 hectares).

Michael Jackson planned to visit Warsaw again (March 2000), at the invitation of the Mayor Mr. Pawe? Piskorski, in order to further negotiate. Although the visit was officially announced & fans were in great anticipation, MJ never turned up.

The deal never came to fruition & the real reasons are still unknown (although various explanations were circulated at that time).

Does the HBO One Night Only count as a missed deal?
I would have loved to see that happening. I always wonder whether there is some footage from the rehearsals. I've recently read an interview with people that were involved and they were saying that it was grand and all of it Michael's idea!

That definitely counts. Good One!

Oh yeah I forgot, the Family Addams thing in 1993 and the hook movie in 83/92.

Such a shame he never got to do these things.

I think this was supposed to be the "Peter Pan's Neverland" theme park. They only dubbed it "EuroJackson" because the original name of Disneyland Paris was "EuroDisneyland" imo.

Btw, these are all the things that I hoped to find in "Michael Jackson, Inc." Michael's entrepreneur genius was not in execution of ideas by the hands of managers, lawyers and business partners (which the book focused on), but in his creative mind that was always working at 100 miles per hour, generating these grand ideas, dreaming BIG. Yes, 90% of these projects fell through, but the 10% that he manage to get done were record-setting. This is the background that is most interesting for me personally. Unfortunately the book disappointed in that regard.

Some of those projects Michael was willing to make them happen but he didn't have the time or more importantly, people ruined his artitistic chances he got to be more sucessful like the SOB Chandlers with those allegations, he conceived Ghosts since 1993 to promote the movie Addams Family Values. Who knows if will ever find out what he had in mind for that first version.

This is from a Damie.n Shield.s article about the Halloween Special Michael was planning in 2009 but because of his tragic and unexpected passing, he didn't make it happen. If you want to see the notes he wrote about this, look for Halloween Special on his page.

Halloween Television Special

When Michael Jackson signed on with AEG Live to perform a concert residency at London’s O2 Arena, his agreement to do the shows came with a specific requirement; that AEG would also help him venture into movies.

One of the first things Jackson wanted to do was produce a Halloween television special focusing on his more horror-type music and film pieces; “Thriller” and “Ghosts”. To do this, Jackson had Randy Phillips set up a meeting between he and Grammy Award show producer Ken Ehrlich. Phillips and AEG’s Tim Leiweke joined the pair, along with Jackson’s manager Frank Dileo. The meeting took place before rehearsals on June 24th, 2009 at the Staples Centre – the day before Jackson died.

“When I saw him the night before he passed, we were having a meeting about another show; a Halloween project that Michael wanted to do with CBS,” Ehrlich recalls.

“Ken Ehrlich was to produce the show for Michael. It centered around the ‘Ghosts’ footage Michael had personally financed,” Randy Phillips told me today. “The intent was to create a yearly Halloween television special. Michael was going to host and perform on the show.”

"Who's doing sculpture for Halloween special"
Jackson had dreamed of re-introducing his 1996 musical masterpiece, “Ghosts,” to the world. With his dazzling “This Is It” tour bringing the focus back to him as an entertainer, October 2009 was shaping up to provide the ultimate platform for Jackson’s dream to come true.

“Ghosts” is a 40-minute film, co-written by Jackson with legendary horror writer Stephen King, and directed by Stan Winston. Jackson plays the roles of several characters in the film including; the fun-loving yet eccentric ‘Maestro’, the rude, ignorant, bigoted town ‘Mayor’ and the ‘Skeleton’. The characters are very different, but have one glaring thing in common – they all dance exactly like the King of Pop!

“The video contains some of the best, most inspired dancing of Jackson’s career,” said Stephen King in a moving piece published shortly after the entertainer’s death. “If you look at it, I think you’ll see why Fred Astaire called Jackson ‘a helluva mover’.”

The first ‘Michael Jackson Halloween Special’ was to be broadcast on October 31, 2009 by CBS. This was perfect timing for all parties involved. By the time Halloween rolled around Jackson would be one month into a three-month break from the tour, so the positive PR and exposure would be warmly welcomed. The King of Pop’s final show of the tour’s first leg was scheduled for September 29, 2009. Jackson was not scheduled to return to the O2 stage until January 7, 2010 for the commencement of the second leg.

Because Jackson would not be on tour at the time of the broadcast, his performance for the special would have been sourced from a trove of high-definition footage AEG Live had planned to capture during the first leg.

It was planned that footage of the spectacular “Thriller”/”Ghosts”/”Threatened” portion of the live show would be edited as Jackson’s “performance” in the special, giving the home-viewing audience their first up-close glimpse of the superstar’s triumphant return to the stage, and the magnificent production on offer. This would be a excellent advertising for future ticket sales with AEG anticipating that the tour would proceed to residency in additional cities around the world.

“Michael was very happy. I solidified [the] Halloween special that he wanted,” explained Frank Dileo in an interview. “We laid out what we wanted to do with the film ‘Ghosts’, and what his participation was and he was acceptive of that. He was extremely happy.”

However unfortunately, the tour and the Halloween special weren’t to be, with Jackson passing away the day following his meeting – on June 25th, 2009.

^^you know since we've talked about running Thriller and Ghosts as a double bill in theaters, maybe the Estate could do something like that for a tv halloween special instead and run it on CBS.
That would be a new project and fulfill one of Michael's ideas/dreams.

I have a sweatshirt with the places Michael included in the second Dangerous Tour leg and the last place he was going to visit was India. It's also Wikipedia. There was no mention of USA at all.

I agree on trying to make Michael's Halloween TV Special according to his ideas, including the reintroduction of his short Ghosts. It'd be more viable than having theatrical runs.

For all I know, their intention was to build the Eastern European equivalent to Disneyland theme park.
