'THRILLING' NUMBERS

Keith,

With three versions of Michael Jackson's "Thriller 25" on sale next week (Feb. 12), how will overall sales of the album be calculated?

Checking on Amazon.com's top seller list, it looks like each version of the album is counted separately in their overall sales chart, as they have different SKUs.

How will Nielsen SoundScan do the math? And taking it even one step further, will sales of the anniversary album added to the overall sales of the original album, bringing it a step closer in overtaking the Eagles' greatest hits album (as the best selling album of all time in the U.S.)?

Joseph Yenish
Scotch Plains, N.J.

Hi Joseph,

All of the expanded versions of "Thriller" will have their sales combined with the existing sales of the original 1982 album. At the end of the day, there will only be one number to represent the sales of "Thriller."

This is not unusual. Many albums are reissued with bonus content from a few months after the original album's release to many years later. For the most part, Billboard and Nielsen SoundScan will have the sales of the various permutations of an album merged together.

Godley and Creme's directorial style proved to be equally as original and innovative as their music. They took their bizarre sense of humor and put it on display on groundbreaking videos such as Herbie Hancock's "Rockit", which like the video for "An Englishman In New York" can really haunt your dreams, and for their own song "Cry", which introduced the technique of analog cross-fading, which was later used to much success in the video for Michael Jackson's "Black or White". They also have done videos for Sting, Duran Duran, Huey Lewis and The News, The Police and others.

Al Jarreau was one of the supergroup of singers who recorded "We Are the World," the 1985 song written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie for USA for Africa.

At Severance Hall Friday, Jarreau sang at a benefit to raise money for "New Life Community," which prepares homeless women for careers.

"We've still got a lot of problems to solve," Jarreau said. "I like being part of the solution, so I love helping. That's why I'm here."

Born in Indonesia around 1960, Ah Meng came to the zoo in 1971 after she was confiscated from a family who had kept her as an illegal pet.
She featured in almost 30 travel films and was the subject of more than 270 articles in newspapers and magazines, the statement said. She also became the first and only non-human recipient of the "Special Tourism Ambassador" award in the city-state.
Ah Meng mingled with famous personalities such as Britain's Prince Philip, magician David Copperfield, pop singer Michael Jackson and movie star Elizabeth Taylor.

Pop culture isn't too good at looking back, but to celebrate Grammy's 50th anniversary, the Recording Academy will induct an unusually large slate of "recordings of significance" into the Grammy Hall of Fame this year -- including Billy Joel's classic 1977 album "The Stranger," Michael Jackson's record-setting "Thriller," Prince's landmark "1999," Arturo Toscanini's 1953 recording of "Verdi: Otello" and the John Coltrane Quartet's "Ballads" album. And it will promote a series of CDs designed to collect award-winning songs in a variety of genres.

Recorded works are eligible for the Grammy Hall of Fame 25 years after their release and are seen to have significantly affected musical history.

Katy says in her book: "The staff were very kind but looking back it was kind of like the Michael Jackson Thriller video where dead bodies rise up behind gravestones to come out at you.
"Nurses and staff came from every corridor as we struggled to put one foot in front of the other and reach the end. It seemed to go on for miles. We'd been asked to sit in a side room, a nice delicate shade of peach with lots of baby leaflets in."

Ah Meng, world's most famous orangutan, dies

An orangutan who met Prince Philip, Elizabeth Taylor and Bjorn Borg has died aged 48.

Ah Meng became a poster girl for Singapore’s tourism industry and conservation publicity. She featured in more than 30 documentary films, with co-stars who included Steve Irwin, the late Australian wildlife presenter.
She became hugely popular through Singapore Zoo’s “Breakfast with an Orangutan” scheme which allowed thousands of visitors to be photographed with her.
Her fame was such that visiting dignitaries queued to meet her, among them Prince Philip, the actresses Elizabeth Taylor and Bo Derek, and Bjorn Borg, the tennis star.
In 1993, under headlines such as “Is Bubbles Jealous?” US newspapers recorded her meeting with the pop star Michael Jackson. Her visit to the singer’s hotel was widely alleged to have upset his pet chimpanzee.

Ah Meng’s contribution to raising the profile of Singapore was recognised in 1992 when she received the “Special Tourism Ambassador” award - the first and only non-human recipient of the honour.
Singapore Zoo is to hold a public memorial service for Ah Meng. The zoo also announced that the next orangutan born there will be named Ah Meng Junior in honour of the departed star.
As Singapore’s president offered condolences, Robin Goh, the zoo’s former head of public relations, hailed Ah Meng’s star quality: “She could drink tea from a teacup and looked good for an ape.”
The orangutan, who could reportedly command fees as high as $2,275 US dollars (£1,168) an hour, like many stars was not always easy to work with.
In March 1982, while on location for a tourism promotional film, she climbed a tree and refused to come down for three days. She eventually fell from the tree and broke her arm.
In 1992 she became jealous that her keeper was paying too much attention to a visiting French female research student and attacked her perceived rival.
Ah Meng, a Sumatran orangutan, was thought to have been born on June 18 1960. Although Sumatran orangutans are critically endangered, she was smuggled to Singapore from Indonesia and kept illegally as a pet.
She was discovered by a vet in 1971 and taken to Singapore Zoo. By the 1980s she was so popular that hundreds would flock to the zoo to celebrate her birthday. She was 'interviewed' by more than 300 writers.
Singapore President S.R. Nathan told the Straits Times: "A lot of people, both local and foreigners, have enjoyed her company. I'm sure the patrons of the zoo will miss her.”
Fanny Lai, group chief executive of Wildlife Reserves Singaporem, added: "She has touched the hearts of everyone who has met her and contributed immensely in helping promote awareness of how each and every one of us can play a role in anti-poaching, anti-deforestation and conservation matters. We will miss her dearly."
Ah Meng died on Friday. The cause of death is thought to be old age. She was said to have been nearly 95 in human terms.
She had five children and is also survived by her partner Charlie and six grandchildren.
Her first companion Rodney died in 1987 from diabetes complications. Her second relationship, with Pusung, ended when he was sent to an Adelaide zoo for a breeding programme in 2000.

Which songs hold special memories for you and tell us what those memories are?

The era of Michael Jackson’s Thiller reminds me of a time of no worries, just happiness. I was young and life was pleasant.

It was basically me doing Michael Jackson-style moves; maybe something I would see in an Arthur Mafokate video, and just play with it,” laughs Masilo, who performed for Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands at a tender 11 years old. This opportunity presented itself during Queen Beatrix’s 1996 South African state visit. Says Le Sueur: ”The Queen had a little bit of extra time in her schedule so we [at the Dance Factory] were called up to put a little show together. We put together a 40-minute programme featuring a variety of dancers, from amateurs to real professionals. Dada performed along with the Peacemakers, the group she had then been part of, which formed in Meadowlands.”

The King of Pop's zombies still thrill 25 years on

PARIS (AFP) — The zombies are a quarter century old, but the years have been kind.
The best-selling album of all time, Michael Jackson's Thriller, is to be re-released this week, 25 years after first appearing with its success and popularity still unchallenged.
The album made Michael Jackson the undisputed pop artist of the modern age and the Thriller video introduced the world to break-dancing back-from-the-dead monsters whose moves inspired a generation.
Having already sold an estimated 55 million copies according to the latest Guinness Book of Records, anniversary copies of the album and videos are to hit shelves worldwide on Monday and Tuesday.
With the music industry in crisis and sales of albums declining due to Internet downloads, the records set by Thriller in the 1980s appear safe from competition.
It spent eighty weeks in the US top ten album chart, was certified 27 times platinum (27 million sales) in the country and was and still is the only album to have been a best-seller in the United States for two consecutive years (1983 and 1984).
It went platinum or diamond in 27 other countries, including Britain, France and Japan; out of nine tracks, seven were released as singles; and it won eight Grammys at the US music awards in 1984.
The music, a mix of soul, disco and funk, also inspired one of Michael Jackson's most famous dance moves, a backwards sliding motion that stands among the greatest of his many contributions to the world of pop.
The "Moonwalk" was born during a performance of Billy Jean, one of the hit singles on Thriller, during a televised celebration for the 25th birthday of the record label Motown in May 1983.
The re-released album and DVD, which appear Tuesday in the United States and Monday everywhere else, features seven bonus tracks with contributions from US R&B and rap stars Kanye West, Akon and Fergie.
There is also another unreleased track dating back to when the album was first recorded.
Thriller first appeared a little over 25 years ago in December 1982. It was the sixth solo album from Jackson, who earned the "King of Pop" sobriquet thanks to its phenomenal success.
Perhaps the ultimate tribute to the album's enduring popularity is to witness a dance floor when the first notes of Thriller or Billy Jean register at a party, sparking the amateur moonwalkers and zombie impersonators into life.

Grammy Awards present big-name duets

http://www.fayobserver.com/article?id=285260

“THE 50TH ANNUAL GRAMMY AWARDS”
Since the Grammy Awards were given permission by the Writers Guild of America to proceed, there has been a flurry of activity about who is and isn’t performing. Will Amy Winehouse come across the pond? At first, the answer was yes. But then it was no, no, no — thanks to her being in rehab and the Department of Homeland Security, which denied her visa. Then Friday, her visa got approved, but it was too late for the eyelinered crooner to fly here. So she will perform live — via satellite. Because it’s the 50th Grammy Awards, there will be all sorts of special performances. The one that should be buzzed about Monday is the duet of Tina Turner and Beyoncé. Other performers include Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, Feist, Fergie, John Legen and Foo Fighters. Michael Jackson is rumored to show up, and it’s possible that Kanye West will do a special tribute to his mother, who died last year. The red carpet coverage begins at 6 p.m. on E! The ceremony is at 8 p.m. on CBS.

The Grammys look bright

John Fogerty, Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard will team up for a special performance, as will nominees Herbie Hancock and pianist Lang Lang in a special combination of their classical and jazz styles.
There's even a rumor that Michael Jackson might show up for a tribute to "Thriller," which on Tuesday will be re-released in a special 25th anniversary edition.
And best of all, nominee Rihanna will perform with The Time, that funky fabulous 1980s band known for "Jungle Love" and for brawling with Prince in "Purple Rain."

Airport Lanes was full of side ponytails, leg warmers and mullets Saturday afternoon as Michael Jackson blared over the loudspeakers.
Dudes and dudettes flashed back to the 1980s in the name of charity for the 18th annual Junior Achievement Crazy Bowl.
The two-day event featured a record-breaking 97 teams. Those teams showed off their ``gnarly'' bowling skills to raise money to provide K-12 students in Jackson County hands-on, interactive programs that teach financial literacy, work-force readiness and personal financial responsibility.

Pearson has a point. That was indeed Naomi Campbell hoofin' with lizards (who jived better than most humans) to the beat of Michael Jackson's Thriller. And what were they trying to sell? Oh yeah, something called SoBe Life Water. (Me neither.)
