I’m just curious about what unreleased tracks considered for The Ultimate Collections were.

I heard Chicago 1945 was the one of it, but I’ve never knew about the source.

If anyone has info, please let me know🙂

Does anyone remember the website Mjstar? It was pretty big around 2004/2005 always sharing exclusives and the latest MJ news.

Anyway, I remember them having brand new MJ songs and you were able to listen to them on the links , it was songs for TUC. Basically it was a load of crap and all the songs were fake and not for TUC at all.

Yes I remember MJSTAR. Twisted Vision was the main guy over there. It was full of crap like this, they made out they were the edgy forum with inside info, when it was all a load of manure like you remember.

Twisted Vision reinvited himself after Michael died and all the after death fans have no idea of his history in the fan community.

They went through pretty much everything MJ had when they were organising the box set.
Then they didn’t look thoroughly considering we had 4 discs of unheard material since TUC released. Now I’m not saying that’s a whole lot but lots of these songs didn’t appear on TUC and there are probably still 2 possible albums possible with unheard material

You do realize you are criticizing and complaining about the songs that Michael wanted to be made public???

They even went through previously unreleased songs with only music on them:

"I remember going through a hundred tapes - some with Michael's voice, some without" (Matt Forger)

Michael Jackson wanted to include very few, previously unreleased songs on that box set.

" ... So I can do the ['Ultimate Collection'] box set, just giving them any 2 [previously unreleased] songs ... " (Michael Jackson, 2002 Killer Thriller Party Speech)

By doing that, he wanted to merely terminate the contract with Sony Music, while keeping the majority of these previously unreleased songs for new releases but under a different record company.

No proof he was talking about TUC during that speech, so not really sure why you're inserting it here.

Michael fulfilled his contract with Sony with the release of Number Ones.

TUC was some kind of "thank you" for the fans whilst Michael and his team were preparing for the trial.

'Number Ones' (a greatest hits album, released in 2003) was his penultimate contractual obligation with Sony Music.

'The Ultimate Collection' (a box set, released in 2004) was his final contractual obligation with Sony Music.

This was also confirmed by certain press reports, such as by the Los Angeles Times.

Besides, Michael Jackson in that speech (in 2002) spoke about a box set, not about a greatest hits album.

They went through his vault and then chose a handful of songs that they wanted to put on the project. Were you expecting them to do a 4-cd boxset with just unreleased songs?

I mentioned in another thread a while back about my time working with Sony UK and Europe in a limited capacity for the Invincible campaign. The same is true for other MJ campaigns until the Visionary reissues.

I was by no means a big player and had no part in MJs exit dealings, but your account of MJ’s exit agreement is absolutely correct - as the US firm advised that MJ was obligated for 1 greatest hits and 1 box set. And, of course, this is what was delivered.

However, I was under the impression that there was no case of MJs vault being opened up and there being a free for all. Far from it, I was under the impression that there was some minimal agreement of vault content but no ‘buffet’ so to speak. But I say all this from ‘hear say’ on the UK side of things and this was very much a US firm project.

For those claiming that the vault was totally opened up; how sure are you? Because that really does not bode well for more unreleased content coming out…

They were also dead set against the Michael album until their opinion magically changed on it. Lol

Why do you guys think he would let them pick random songs out of his vault. He clearly gave them what he wanted to put out

Maybe he gave Sony the song Monkey Business to once again point out what a crooked thing they did with him with Invincible.

Exactly, sigh, so many have no understanding of how things were when Michael was alive. He told them them what songs and demos he wanted made public. HE worked on the songs and when HE was ready HE gave the songs to SONY.

I wish I could find the clip, its not Michael but gives a good insight into behind the scenes things. On Making The Tour with NSYNC theres a clip where they are in a room with their manager and they are creating the tour setlist. It was the members of NSYNC and their manager who decided the tour setlist, which song when, and then they gave that list to the record company.

Same thing with Michael, the artist decides what songs and when.

I think Michael approved those demos were released but a weird thing is that MJ approved Beautiful Girl on that form. It would be his new material, but lyrics is incompleted.

Good gravy, is it so hard to understand, he gave demos and unfinished tracks for The Ultimate Collection because he wanted to. At that time, he obviously had no interest on working on them further, so he gave demos. Seriously, it seems people here have of no understanding of Michael, who he was, what was happening in his life when The Ultimate Collection was being put together or how things worked when an artist like Michael created his own music.

Its like talking to a brick wall around here, everyone only seeing things from a 2024 viewpoint, geez!!!!

Matt Forger: "In the Ultimate Collection there was a desire to show the evolution of the career and how the songs changed with the times and Michael grew as an artist and as a songwriter.

I remember going through a hundred tapes - some with Michael's voice, some without. The best were chosen for this project, which covered his entire career. We wanted Michael to be more involved, but he was very busy with other commitments. He reviewed what had been assembled and gave final approval to the project. "

Well I’m pretty sure he was upset on most of the songs that made it on disc 4. He wanted to work on them more, and the songs were on the paper hung up in his bedroom when he died

I don’t have the source on hand, but Michael Prince once outright stated that MJ had no involvement in TUC. Sony compiled it and gave him final authorization, but he likely didn’t actually review what they sent—he was too wrapped up in trial prep and just said, “Do what you want.” Some years later, he found out that they had released a certain song he wanted to revisit (either “Beautiful Girl” or “The Way You Love Me”) and he was devastated.

MJ would never (and has never, looking at the compilations he had direct involvement in) authorize the release of unfinished songs, let alone songs he still had on his to-do list. He’s stated time and time again that he doesn’t want people to hear his music before it’s ready.
