Why did Michael release so few Studio albums?

1. Michael was a perfectionist. He wanted to create the perfect album and he was someone who was never happy, which is why he took long time recording albums. He was constantly striving for perfection.

2. Success of Thriller. With Thriller, Michael found the perfect formula for commercial success and he tried to replicate it with Bad, Dangerous & History. Following the release of an album, go on tour and release singles over the next two years. That formula worked well for Michael in terms of commercial success, as although Bad, Dangerous & History didn't reach the commercial heights of Thriller, they still managed to sell over 20 million copies, which is a great achievement.

3. Michael was somewhat dependent on other people for creation of his music. Prince was someone who could play any instrument. He could produce, as could Michael, but Michael wasn't proficient in playing any instrument, which means that unlike Prince, he couldn't record a song on his own. He needed other people and that probably meant that sometimes there might have been delays in recording sessions, if someone wasn't available.
