Why did the 2014 release of “A Place With No Name” meet with controversy?

I know this song was originally recorded in 1998 and somewhat adapted from the America song “A Horse With No Name” - but for some reason, this release upset the MJ fan community in 2014 (I think?). Supposedly, some fans didn’t like the release of a song cover? Can someone explain what was the backlash against this 2014 revised song? I admit I like the song and its’ revision.

The main reason is that its opening lines have an apparent reference to his 1993 incident when his jeep broke down as he drove across on the highway.

Many Michael Jackson fans did not like that reference because via that particular incident Michael Jackson met with Jordan Chandler (the boy who later accused him of child sexual abuse behaviour).

How many is many though? I've never seen any one have an issue with this.

It's just a terrible remix.

I didn't know that before. But since you mentioned that reference, it occurs to me that Michael sings about pulling out his wallet. That's exactly what he had to do in the Chandler case because his lawyers advised him to pay up. And didn't he have a relationship with June Chandler? Could she be the woman he's singing about? Besides, the song is about a near-death experience, and that's exactly what happened to Michael's career in 1993.

Wow like WHAT really! I didn't know that before. But since you mentioned that reference!
How did this happen and I never heard this RUMOUR before or was it proven he actually did have a "relationship with a weak and UNFIT mother"! Please fill me in on the hard FACTS pls
Like huh?? o_O your assumptions and connections are so far reaching but just assumptions, unless there is ANY proof of this TRUTH of course! 👍
I LOVE MICHAEL'S VERSION TOTALLY ADDICTED TO THE HEAVY BASS OH YES GOTTA GET UP AND DANCE MY BUTT OFF!! 😜

I read about it, but I don't know if it's true. That's why I phrased it as a question.

June was a remarried woman at this point, EC already had a decent relationship with Dave if we take that phonecall into account, claiming that EC was acting out of jealousy for June doesn't really add up if he didn't have a problem with Dave.
It feels odd reading a RC quote here, is it from his book?

I was always interested to know how June came across in the 2005 trial, how she reacted to seeing MJ. And generally what became of her. We can only speculate if anything happened between her and MJ as the evidence is scarce, but I think he certainly enjoyed playing happy families with her for abit.

Controversy?! There was no such thing. That's just something people say to make a song sound more interesting.

I wholeheartedly disagree with this notion and in fact I have never heard it mentioned before or any fan having an issue with it. Upon studying the further lyrics of the song its blatantly clear that its part of a build up story telling that has nothing to do with any abuse allegations or the Chandlers. Its just you or a few select people seeing something that is not there!

MJs rendition of this song is truly beautiful, his vocals in this song is filled with more passion/rawness than in most other songs even though MJ was a master at work of that, which is saying a lot! I think the song is easily underrated.

I would argue these lyrics below are sung with emotion & intensity that is only matched by Earth Song.

As she took me right through the fog
I see a beautiful city appear
Where kids are playin' and people are laughin'
And smiling and nothing to fear
She said this is the place where no people have pain
With love and happiness
She turned around, looked down at my eyes, and started cryin'
And grabbed my hand, you've got a friend

She started likin' me, kissin' me, and huggin' me
She didn't really, really want me to leave
She showed me places I've never seen
And things I've never done
This really looks like a lot of fun
I seen the grass, and the sky, and the birds
And the flowers surrounded by the trees
This place is filled with love and happiness
How in the world could I wanna leave?

So then I went in my pocket, took my wallet on out
With my pictures of my family and girl
This is the place that you choose to be with me
When you thought you could be in another world

 I am sorry I HATE REDDIT most of it is TRASH TALK and I do not like the spamware that comes with visiting their site so I try to never go on there at all it is , so that is why I never saw this ridiculousness it is pure BS lol! Why bring it up at all unless it is proving your point right is what I mean, because I was honestly quite shocked and confused to see this about her and Michael in your post!!
Why in HELL would Michael ever need a married woman with children when he is literally taking care of her entire family, like Michael had no respect or morals about cheaters and marriage vows at all yeah right..like really, these delusional ppl and their fantasies and assumptions of him just cheating away and sleeping around is delusional and misleading info to the new Fans! They are nowhere near the TRUTH, I have absoultely zero respect for a so called "mother" that knew damn well nothing happened between her son and Michael because she was right there alng for the free ride, they sure did enjoy ALL the perks from being in HIS WORLD but when it was time for her to stand up and TELL the TRUTH and fight like hell for Michael's honour after all he had done to improve all of her children's lives, where was she then! No way in hell would Michael ever be a cheater, a user or an abuser period!!
Just my opinion of course 👍

Like others said, the controversy was in regards to the remix, though generally I think this one got more positive reactions than most. It’s a very left field interpretation, but I personally think it’s leagues better than the original.

I’ll go out on a limb and say, because it was a terrible remix that makes Fergie’s Beat It 2008 remix sound like a Beatles song in comparison.

cant recall hearing of any controversy around it other than people just overall not liking the xscape remixes...because theyre remixes
i think the APWNN remix is very eh, not my favorite off the record but at the same time not my least favorite

I think the original version of A Place With No Name is extremely boring, and whenever I listen to APWNN, it is always the remix version that I choose. Yes, the remix version is heavily overproduced, but it is miles better than the original.

Admittedly, it is a fairly average song.

Some songs should be left alone, the original horse with no name is classic

Yes, America's A Horse With No Name is indeed a classic.

I wonder why Michael decided to sample A Horse With No Name.
Wasn't he allergic to horses?
Michael was allergic to horses, but this did not stop him in his immense love for animals, in fact he took antihistamines when he had to ride a horse

I’m sorry but the fck are you even talking about?? That’s amongst the biggest load of rubbish I’ve seen on here.

You’ve literally made that up. The controversy (was there even any? 🤥) was due to how drastically different the production was from the original guitar demo.

It sounded bloody bizarre and a lot different to what people expected it to sound like.

Sony & the estate should have released the original as a single in late 2009.

The leaked snippet had caused a huge hype; more so unbelievable this opportunity hasn't been utilized.

It’s weird how we got the TDCAU clip (which was official to show that he was still in shape and healthy) and then this random leaked demo of apwnn not too long after.
