I feel like it’s more Bad era than Thriller era but idk
 
I see ‘we are the world’ and his visit to madam tussaud’s to view his waxwork in 1985, as the official end of the ‘thriller’ era. I don’t consider ‘captain eo’ to be part of that at all.

for me ‘thriller’ era is nov 1982-march 1985.
 
Another big difference imo is the target audience. Thriller and Off The Wall had adult audiences in mind but Michael also reached kids because of his performance. During the Bad era he had more focus on kids as part of his target audience with fluff like Captain EO and Moonwalker.

Furthermore the sound of both songs on Captain EO is completely different to the sound of 1982-1984 and the dancing is also different with more aggressive moves, the focus is more on patterns and poses that look cool compared to the fluent smooth dancing of the years before.

So I would also clearly put Captain EO as the start of the then new Bad era.
 
Oh so we're just skipping the Thrad era, best era of all times?

I would be tempted to say Thriller era, because he still looks just like he did on the Victory tour. But since "Another Part of Me" is on the Bad album, that alone should make it Bad era.
 
It’s the Thrad era! I think the Thrad era deserves its own era because that’s after We Are the World came out, when it started to be recognized, and when Captain EO was filmed and came out.

Michael’s appearance at the 1986 Grammy’s is literally the definition of the Thrad era. (See below).

I also consider the full Bad video to be the official transition from the Thrad era to the Bad era.

yes and no. Both songs were written and recorded during the Victory sessions. I'd consider it Thriller era in terms of recording dates but Bad era in terms of release date
 
Beginning of Bad era

He does a lot of the dance moves we come to see on the Bad Tour, he looks more like a Bad era version of himself and his voice on APOM and WAHTCTW sound Bad era to me.

Although weirdly I don't really associate Another Part Of Me with Captain EO. I always forget its there. I'll always associate it with the Bad Tour

Important distinction actually:

The Victory Era lasted from 1984 to 1985, thanks to the release of Wait as a single, and the tour, I imagine. We Are The World also falls under that umbrella.

The Bad Era was well underway in the studio by the time Captain EO came about. Wasn't nothing Thriller about it. His duet with Jermaine was closer to Thriller than EO.

I'd also wager everytime MJ unveiled a new moonwalk or moonwalk type in a performance it's a whole new era.
