$30 Billion!! ...a 2Dec08 article says that Sony/ATV was recently valued at $30 bil

Well,
Acuff/rose was bought by Sony/ATV in 2002 for 157 million, while back before Bandier came on board.
There are many aritcles still on the web about it, but the all say MJ was loosing his share in the catalog! OF course! so jealuos!

yes..at least that number.
if u listen to the top forty, ur listening to MJ's top forty. if akon or tpain are involved in the song..or ne yo, or rhianna...or chris brown, or..flo rida, etc. etc...

and...if u are hearing a commercial, accompanied with music, ur most likely hearing a MJ commercial, cus the music is in the catalogue. almost any country song you hear...

It's just been reported on tv that British mobile phones is worth £15 billion a year. I say, I don't see why Mj's catalogue couldn't be worth £15 billion in total.

Acuff/rose was bought in 2002! more than 6 years ago!....!

Exactly and that is why I think the $30 Billion estimate is accurate. Those songs from those artists are played everyday. The people that were nominated from Grammys their songs are probably being played on the radio and there are people who are gonna buy the CDs from these artists. Then the songs being used in the ommericials under the catalogue MJ has. Those commericials are being played everyday on tv. That is $$$$$$ right there.
 
maybe it has generated that much but it's not worth that much.....total up what that means...and then get back to me.

I understand, well wasn't also many movie things added and stuff like that. But I'm not saying it's about the songs that are added but it has been much more worthy in the first place. I think that 3 billions must be very much underestimated. Are you sure they talked about Sony/ATV when they talked about 3 billion dollars. I think even Michael's own songs are over a billion dollars worth. And so Beatles and Elvis must be billions. It means how much you can make money with them in the long run and after artists death. It's different to count all the single song costs together than value the catalog by estimating how much it will really make money.
 
It would be completely stupid to sell the catalog like ever, because if you was out of money and "forced" to sell it, you should sell it only for like that 3 billion dollars and technically you lose so so enormously money. So there's the selling worth of it and the value of making profit from it. One of the dumbest things ever would be selling the catalog, so it's just better to handle your businesses like you don't have to sell it. It's like a gold mine...
 
um he doesn't get to keep it forever...hence the pimping out of the songs so they can all make as muchmoney as they can before they lose it.

let's just say he has enough songs. every time i turn on espn sports radio, they come in with a loop featuring an atv song.

its always been reported as around that figure. are those just mj songs that he actually wrote interms of the ones on mijac? (putting aside the non mj tracks in the cat) cause compaired to other artists hes not released that much so .
 
Not really, some songs by Ray Charles and Sly Stone are in there. (Correction on early posts, Sly's music is NOT in Northern Songs). I think the South Carolina theme song and some other songs are in MiJac too. I think the ATV catalog has more songs.

I just wanted to know how many there were in there. There may be at least 400 in MiJac and while MJ's music is probably the majority, I agree that not a lot of MJ songs are on there. I mean, does he even own rights to songs he didn't write on "Off the Wall", "Thriller", "Bad" (only two), "Dangerous" (probably one or two), "HIStory" (three) and "Invincible"?

the article could have been written before the purchase of Famous Music which had 125,000 songs

so if you add those all up.. Michael makes money off over 625,000 songs... be it on radio, TV, films, itunes, computer, etc,,

Leonard Cohen will receive £1 million in royalties for the use of his song 'Hallelujah' as this year's X Factor winner's single. The track was performed three times in Saturday's live finale. The ITV1 show’s three finalists have each recorded their own version of the song, which is expected to become the Christmas No 1, selling one million CDs and downloads.

The biblical epic, composed in 1984, has survived more than a hundred interpretations from artists including Bob Dylan, k. d. lang and Rufus Wainwright.

Sony/ATV chief executive Marty Bandier told The Times that commercial use of the song usually comes with a large price tag. "We get a host of requests from films and television to use it, but 'Hallelujah' is recognised as one of the greatest songs ever, so it demands a high fee," he said.

while the world is debating his sanity becuz of a outfit and disguise........Michael is surely rebuilding his empire and capitalizing on his investments s .... without the haters and detractors be none the wiser...

the meaness of the media does hurt but on the other hand... it gives him a cover to conduct his business..
he is a regular Dr Jekyll and Mr Hide.............

Michael Jackson avoided having to sell his half to pay off debts when Sony loaned him money in 2006.

Sony/ATV expanded its business in 2007 with the acquisition of publisher Famous Music from Viacom. The deal was worth some $370 million, and added 125,000 songs and sound cues to Sony/ATV's catalog. Famous songs include classics such as 'Footloose,' 'Moon River,' and 'Take My Breath Away'.

The growing company also scored a hit when it acquired the catalogue of award-winning songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller in 2007 for some $45 million. The Leiber Stoller catalogue contains more than 40 Top 40 hits, including "Stand By Me", "Poison Ivy", and "Love Potion #9", as well as several songs made famous by Elvis Presley ("Hound Dog", "Jailhouse Rock").

CEO Martin Bandier, formerly an executive at EMI Group, is leading a focus on Sony/ATV's most valuable asset, its collection of Beatles songs. The company had historically resisted licensing Beatles recordings for commercial use, but in 2008 Bandier announced that he favored licensing Beatles songs for things that haven't been licensed in the past -- under certain circumstances.

Jackson acquired the Beatles catalog in 1985 when he bought ATV Music for about $47 million from Australian tycoon Robert Holmes à Court (much to the chagrin of friend and former Beatle Paul McCartney). He sold a 50% stake in the business to Sony for $150 million in 1995 amid personal financial trouble. Sony also contributed its existing publishing business to the new venture, forming Sony/ATV. The company acquired the Acuff-Rose catalog (featuring classics from Hank Williams and Roy Orbison) in 2002 for $157 million from Gaylord Entertainment.

ATV Music was once the publishing arm of Lord Lew Grade's UK media empire, Associated Television (ATV). It had acquired Northern Songs (the Beatles' publishing business) in 1969.
