The executors of the late singer&#8217;s estate have caught on to what disc jockeys and party planners have long known, that &#8220;Thriller,&#8221; released 34 years ago, means Halloween fun for a lot of folks. And now they&#8217;re looking to grab a share of the estimated $8.4 billion Americans spend on costumes, candy, decorations and other items. After all, even Barack and Michelle Obama shimmied to the hit single at their final White House Halloween party.

On Sept. 29, Sony Corp. will release Scream, a compilation of 13 previously issued Jackson songs, such as &#8220;Thriller&#8221; and &#8220;Dangerous,&#8221; as well as a new, remixed version of &#8220;Blood on the Dance Floor&#8221; by the producer duo known as White Panda. Next month, CBS will air a new, hour-long animated spooky special in prime time. More videos and remixes are on the way.

&#8220;We&#8217;re planting the Halloween flag,&#8221; said John Branca, the Los Angeles attorney who serves as co-executor of the singer&#8217;s estate, along with former music industry executive John McClain. &#8220;Michael loved Halloween!&#8221;

There&#8217;s a lot of whimsy in the marketing. The album comes in glow-in-the-dark vinyl. A related poster and cover include an augmented reality Jackson experience. The TV show, &#8220;Michael Jackson&#8217;s Halloween,&#8221; features the voices of Alan Cumming, Lucy Liu and Jim Parsons. It follows a young couple who meet at a mysterious hotel on Halloween night. There are Jackson&#8217;s songs, of course, and an appearance by an animated version of the star, who died in 2009 at age 50. It&#8217;s designed, in part, to draw a younger generation to his music.

Last year, the estate sold Jackson&#8217;s half of the Sony/ATV music publishing business to Sony for $750 million.

</figure>Some fans are sniping online that the &#8220;Scream&#8221; compilation -- with no new songs -- seems like nothing more than a money grab. With two albums of unreleased Jackson music already put out posthumously, Branca says there aren&#8217;t plans for more.
Even if the album doesn&#8217;t sell well, it could increase sales of the Jackson catalog, according to Geoff Mayfield, a Los Angeles-based music industry analyst.
&#8220;It&#8217;s possible the regular album will sell more than the new version,&#8221; he said.
Interest in the pop singer remains high. A 3-D version of Jackson&#8217;s 14-minute &#8220;Thriller&#8221; video screened at film festivals in Toronto and Venice, Italy, this year, and Branca is searching for the best way to distribute it in theaters. Another Jackson short film, the 40-minute &#8220;Ghosts,&#8221; released in 1996, could be updated for new audiences. And if the animated show is a hit, there could be more.
&#8220;You see Charlie Brown Christmas every year,&#8221; Branca said.

I sure hope they do that!! A Blu-Ray release would be great. - With the new sound - they sound Thriller 3D got!

I find it odd that there is not much news regarding this project. What is the estate’s intention? Will this be shown in every cinema? Will it be released on bluray or UHD Bluray? Is Ghosts also part of this project?

I hope for some more news soon.

Maybe they will make an announcement when they are over the Festival screenings.

Has anyone heard further information bout this different ending that John Landis spoke of awhile back?

I hope the making of becomes available for digital download!

I asked someone on Twitter who attended the Venice screening if there was a new ending and he said no. However it would appear the Estate have asked people not to speak about the screenings...

I guess us not knowing anything is only going to raise our interest on the project!!

I find it just encourages expectations that the Estate don't reach.

To me the Estate would have far less backlash from the fan community if they managed expectations from the outset rather than letting BIG questions burn on for weeks on end then failing to deliver.

I don't know why people are still considering there might be a different ending. The estate already confirmed there isn't a new ending!

When did they say that?
I thought Landis said awhile back they had an alternative ending. (I figured it would be with some outtakes or something-not change Thriller, itself).

I think fans often can`t read. For example Branca said allready more then a year ago there will be no new music in the near future and he repeated it now.
Still fans opens threads that they expected it in the Sream-album and the Estate did fail their expections.

Annita, very right on that.. I've always found it fun to participate in these dream release threads but it turns from fun dreaming to expectation real quick.. Even when we are told "no new music in the foreseeable future" or "no alternate ending in Thriller 3D" etc..

I'd add onto that, we as a whole have become super impatient. When Michael was around we would wait 5+ years for anything (other than release) to be released.. We were 100% understanding, now we want the estate to read our threads, read our demands and release because we say so.. When they don't we label them as all these negative things. I will say there is a reason why we are the ones typing on a forum and they are running a business that pushes over a billion dollars worth of product.. It's not JUST about creative thinking that gets people buying and Michaels legacy to continue for decades to come.

The alternate ending in Thriller wasn't a "dream". John Landis said on the Italian tv show last year there was a twist ending and just recently, the month before its premiere, he made a statement saying there was a "shocking surprise" as reported by numerous media. You can't blame fans for that! So what happened? There was no explanation given as far as I am aware and besides, even if they decided at last minute not to include it, it must still exist? And in a finished state too since the statement was so close to its release.

I am talking specifically after it was stated this film doesn't have a alternate ending.. people are still saying it! Of course I would like to hope this is all to throw us off. And picking out a particular part of my statement doesn't change the fact we constantly come up with stuff and get mad when the estate doesn't do it..

I think a big one is how they intend to distribute Thriller 3D. A LOT of fans are waiting to see if they're going to announce a wide release - understandably many fans want to see this thing that Branca et al. claim MUST be seen in a theatre. However it may be the case that the Estate never intended for Thriller to exhibit anywhere but in a few select film festivals to generate media interest. If the latter is all that happens then many people, including myself, will be disappointed because they've talked it up and teased it for weeks. And it would seem from the Q&A's that they are deliberately avoiding questions of this nature. Why? Just say, 'we are working on a distribution deal so you can all see it the way we want you to see it' (3D, Atmos sound) OR 'you'll need to get to one of these random screenings and then those of you who can't we'll release it on home video' - then we all know where we stand. Instead they choose to deliberately withhold information and to me all it does is encourage expectations they never meet. Nobody wins. Manage expectations. And if anything, court the one audience you're always guaranteed to have - us, the hardcore fans.

The real questions fans have are.. "How will I get to see it, when, and what format?" lol... Once they have it, I don't think they'll care how the next fan in Zimbabwe will get it.. just sayin' .. for the most part anyway lol

Maybe they made an alternative ending but decided not to use it anyway - BUT maybe it will then be extra material on the home release - Thriller Director's Cut/Alternative version

I still hope it will be released on Blu-Ray along with Making of - and hopefully some all new material - behind the scenes etc. - maybe even studio footage of MJ recording Thriller.. - Ok, now I am being unrealistic again.. but one can dream right... :)

Yes he mentioned a different ending but the estate statement that came later said that thriller had not been reedited, therefore confirming there isn't a new ending. Also John mentioned a shocking surprise but he said it was in the middle, not at the end.

Wasn&#8217;t there another announcement from the estate left?

indeed. we still need to know how is Thriller 3D going to be released for the rest of the fans.

Wasn't it three announcements - therefore, Scream, Thriller 3D and Michael Jackson's Halloween?

Halloween was a long time before both Scream and Thriller. The 'three announcements' came sometime when Scream was announced implying one more was coming.

We've known about Thriller 3D for a long while now.. what a couple years? maybe a year I don't really remember but we've known.

Thriller 3D just premiered in LONDON!!

Thriller 3D just had it's first UK showing at the Michael Jackson Scream event... And it was AWESOME!!

Fans were treated to a few music videos from the upcoming 'Scream' track list before viewing on the big screen, Michael Jacksons Ghost short film. The first time on the big screen since it's original debut.

Fans were then asked to put on their 3D glasses for the UK premiere of Thriller 3D!!

I'm not a very technical person but it was awesome, like it was made for 3D. Michael is literally front and centre and you can't take your eyes off of him. You can literally hear every sound and feel the effects.

Unfortunately, no news on plans for it's general distribution.

Was anybody else there?

?

Re: Thriller 3D just premiered in LONDON!!

No, they showed BOTDF, Dirty Diana, Leave me alone, (randomly the Torture video that Michael isn't actually in), the Ghost short film and the 15 minute Thriller 3D!!

how was Ghosts' short film quality? was it in Widescreen like Thriller? I wouldn't be surprised if they released another Greatest Hits DVD

Ghosts was in the standard format (not very technical). But no, it wasn't widescreen like Thriller. It also lacked definition. All of the short films looked like they were played directly off of a VHS format. BOTDF was the Wyclef remix.

I sense a home video release from the estate with VHS quality short films and one HD or 4K piece. Thriller.

haha .. aah the estate. Halfassed all the way! Paris didn't even know about the 'album' until this week!?
