1977: MJ's stay in NYC during THE WIZ

I always thought that he saw her as a good friend and from listening between the lines of her comments I get the feeling she liked him more romantically than he liked her. Maybe he liked her a little more than a good buddy, but not deep enough for a long lasting romantic relationship. I always felt he had a deeper love for Diana and Stephanie was just a good girl friend--like those men I used to date regularly, had a good time with, partied with, kissed, did things for each other, but I did not want to marry them. We all moved on and outgrew the relationship, but remained friends.

Barbee that one you just posted always make me sad, because here is this young man and his friends are older people. Where are the teens he is supposed to be hanging out with, having a good time with, doing foolish teen things with, etc. It is when I see photos/videos like this, I get an even deeper understanding of what this man lost and how he tried to compensate for it.

But I'm mad. I thought I saved a pic of Michael holding a balloon with the title
"The Wiz" written on it. I thought I could go back to it. NOT! :shout: I cant fiiiind it.

He was wearing this outfit in the picture holding the balloon.
Would be so nice if I could find it again.

OMG the way he puts his arm around her :shout:

where did it go wrong between them ?

Thanks so much for finding that clip and posting it. They're adorable, aren't they? I would give absolutely everything to know what they were whispering to each other. Especially at the end when they whisper a couple of things-and zoom they're off. He takes her hand and they're getting out of there! I wish they had gotten together-does anybody know if she was married to Jeffrey at this time?

I've heard that "chocolate drop" interview but didn't say grrr-I usually reserve that when I'm looking at him looking at Diana Ross. But I think both those interviews are funny-I noticed in both of those she made it quite clear that she slept over at his place in New York. Not in the carnal sense, of course.

:girl_sigh: To me it seemed she was more emotionally invested in their pairing than he was, but I have no doubt that he cared about her; just not as much as she cared about him. I've always seen Diana Ross as his true love, the one he couldn't have. I would grrrrr at Stephanie because she had a more realistic chance of having a real relationship with him since Diana only saw him as a friend, her Little Mike. :lmao:

Thank you for this thread. I love the Steven Tyler pic because Michael and Steven seem to be so different. I say "seem" because I've never hung out with 'em. :)

Lol at the "we're gonna take care of him" picture. The one with the four women. :)

Well looky heeeere! Not the exact same but clearly the same day/shoot.
The one I'm looking for he's standing, with a leg sorta up. Lol.
So it does exsist. I was beginning to wonder if it was a photo shopped picture
that I saw.

:heat: Hot DAYUM! SexyMF. . . (stealing this pic, lol)

70s EDIT: Is that Ron Jeremy sitting next to Mike?! It sure looks like him, BAHAHAHAHAHAHAA! Gotta love the 70s. . .rock stars and porn stars partying up at Studio 54 on the regular.

Oh Sheila! Lol!
I don't know who that is so I googled the Jeremy guy.

:lmao: :hysterical:  I shouldn't have known his name or anything about him back in the day (because I was underage in the 70s), but did because it was so out there. In that period people actually went to theatres to watch porn and Ron Jeremy was one of the major stars of that industry. It wasn't uncommon to see big name "blue" movie stars hanging out and partying with main stream stars. Too funny!

That pic is awesome! :girl_blush:

OK, for some reason first I read Jeremy Irons instead of Ron Jeremy and I was like: "What??? Jeremy Irons was in porn movies??":doh:

Sheila Awwww now I miss the 70s & 80s--those good partying years. You are so right about those sex shows, especially around 42nd Street in NYC, and some were LIVE real action!!!!! I love that Big hair in the footage from studio 54!! We have a thread here with that video if people want to go digging.

Wait, you're old enough to miss it? How many of us are on this board that was born before The Wiz? LMFAO, I'm serious! I think (for me) that's a major part of the disconnect or things being lost in translation when it comes to celebrating Mike; the generation gap. We can't help when we were born, but if the majority of your artist experience is via YouTube, etc. I'm going to enjoy easing on down the road more with fellow fans that have been there before, experienced the era in real time.

Anywho, someone noticed that Mike was a teen constantly surrounded by people a lot older than himself and how that seemed a bit sad. Older people probably were easier for him to be around since they weren't as prone to doing the fan spazz as his peers (outside of show biz) would be, lol!

Your so right. They were good partying years. Especially in the late '70 with all the feathered hair cuts and guys with the fake silk shirts and devils horn necklaces. That was the style at least where I'm from. Outlook then was freer, less constrained. So much fun...

I was talking about that recently with my brother and fondly remembered the laid back feel of that era. A big part of that (in my honest opinion) was it was pre-internet, pre-24 hr news, pre-political correctness. We knew the world wasn't a crime-free utopia, but we weren't bogged down by it, didn't have it shoved in our faces non-stop like it is now. We knew our neighbors, hung out with our neighbors and wasn't scared to catch a ride with someone going our way. I wouldn't DARE get in a car with someone I didn't know now, unless it was a cab and being driven by a professional, LMFAO! I wouldn't attend a house party hosted by people I didn't know, either. I did back then and had no worries. I could leave my drink on the table, go to the ladies' room and not worry about somebody slipping something into it, too. I would hate to be under 30 in this day and age! When we did do stupid stuff, there wasn't any camera phones or Facebook/Instagram/Tumblr/Twitter/etc. to upload pics/video of it.

I'm sure Mike's silk shirts weren't fake and the jewelry wasn't either, but this is another example of how fly 70s clothes looked. :girl_blush:

Thats true. We had more direct communication face-to-face, unlike now when you can talk to someone all day, but never have to actually look at them. A bit of the free spirit outlook left over from the 60's as well i think. House parties.....It all seemed so safe then. Maybe it wasn't but I never had a bad experience at one of them. Club closes, bunch of us go over to someone's place, party til dawn, go home and believe it or not had the energy to do it all over again the next night. Geez I'd be in the hospital if I tried that now.

The girls outfits....Hot stuff in those days.

Haha-Midnight Special-used to LOVE that show. The stage they're dancing on looks like the size of the floor they had at the first disco we went to.

And talking about the "fly" clothes-immediately made me flash back to my platform shoes that finally made me taller than 5'1" (best shoes I ever had) and my boyfriend/friend's NIK NIK shirts. Awww-they were so expensive-but he looked so cool in them. (If those were expensive to me, I can only imagine Michael's silk versions)
My friend was 6 feet tall, about 120 lbs (if that) and all hip bones, cheek bones and wrist bones. Dance, dance, dance the night away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh platforms :). Loved those. Gosh I'm getting nostalgic.

Came across these pictures. Michael attending Andrea McCardle's (Broadway Annie) 14th Birthday, around '77-'78.

Memory Lane FUN, lol! I loved to watch "Midnight Special" too. "Soul Train" and "American Bandstand" used to air back-to-back and I was always trying out the new dance moves I saw on both shows. My sisters used to buy platforms 3 or 4 pairs at a time and in different colors, then let me have the ones they didn't wear anymore. :D I'd break something if I tried to walk in them now, much less trying to dance in them again. :lmao:

I'm fangirling big time over those pics. . . hot, hawt, HOT! :heat: His 'fro was perfect :girl_blush:

Studio 54. Not sure whats going on here, but Michael looks like "Yeah, whatever..."
He was hot alright. He was like a fine wine..just keeps getting better as he aged. **Sighs**

This is a funny picture. Jack Hayley, Jr. (Liza's husband)looks about as interested as Michael does (not).

Yesssssss, my sister Phyllis had a pair just like those! She could dance in those like a BOSS, lol! That Studio 54 pic is hilarious, but then again Bianca Jagger is/was/always a character. Mike does look bored and Jack Jr. looked so much like his dad that they could almost pass for twins!

Oh that's Bianca Jagger. Didn't recognize her. Just out of curiosity, does anyone know who the two in the back are, or are they just hangers on?

Halston is sitting directly behind Bianca because I've seen this from another angle but I don't recognize the back 2 guys.

Hey everybody!! Stephanie Mills performed on the 2014 Soul Train Awards and I think it's televised on November 30th. I'll update this as soon as I know for sure. I can't wait to see and hear her again! It's been so long.

Wish there were more pics of MJ and Steven Tyler & Aerosmith together. Aerosmith is my favorite band in the USA, and I would have LOVED a collaboration between them.

Yes. That is Jody of Shalimar and the picture right before at his birthday, looks like Beverly Johnson, the super model.
He did date Stephanie awhile but guess Michael didn't want commitment because she ran off and married Jeffrey Daniel (yes that Jeffrey Daniel of Shalimar and teach people how to moonwalk fame. )
Oh Sheila. If you want to torture yourself watch the video of Michael getting the Good Scout Award. He and Stephanie are wildly flirting all through the presentation and not paying any attention. Ha ha.

Michael didn't date Stephanie Mills, she was in love with him, and he saw her as just a good friend and had no romantic interest in her.

And you were there and knew this first hand? Stephanie herself said they dated and Mike didn't dispute it. Dating isn't like being married, ffs! People kill me with their "absolutes" about someone they had no personal one-on-one CONSISTENT dealings with. None of us knows what he felt on the REAL about her or who he was intimate/in love with/dated. And, we don't need to know. We're just speculating and there's nothing wrong with that.

Way to f*ck up the fun in this thread. . . :lmao:
