Lupita Nyong'o played the role of Patsey in 12 Years a Slave (WENN)

Lupita Nyong'o Reveals That Michael Jackson Was The Inspiration For
12 Years A Slave RoleHer character had a similar child-like quality...

Lupita Nyong’o seems to be a big fan of Michael Jackson, as the Oscar nominated actress has admitted that she used Michael Jackson as an inspiration for her character in 12 Years a Slave.

The Kenyan actress has revealed that she felt her character had similar qualities to that of Michael Jackson.

In an interview with Dazed and Confused magazine, she spoke about how she modeled her character’s behavior after Michael Jackson’s child-like qualities.

"There's something very Michael Jackson-like about Patsey - the child-like quality he always had," she explained. "She had her childhood stripped away from her suddenly as soon as she became of sexual age."

Lupita played the role Patsey in the Golden Globe winning movie 12 Years a Slave. She is also nominated for Best Actress In A Supporting Role at the upcoming Academy Awards.

She seems to be following in the footsteps of actress Whoopi Goldberg, who was also nominated for an Academy Award for The Color Purple.

Lupita also admitted that Whoopi Goldberg is one of her inspirations as well.

"Whoopi Goldberg looked like me, she had hair like mine, she was dark like me," she revealed. "I'd been starved for images of myself. I'd grown up watching a lot of American TV. There was very little Kenyan material, because we had an autocratic ruler who stifled our creative expression."

12 Years a Slave is up for nine awards at this year’s show.
The Academy Awards will air on ABC on March 2.

Michael Jackson & Us in Vegas

The Drea's Roadside Cafe Blog Article:

Coincidence or Fate?

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

I can't stop thinking about Michael Jackson. His talent. His music. The fact that "Rock With You" from his Off the Wall album was the best couples skate song EVER played at Cal Skate way back when spending a Saturday at the roller rink was the coolest thing next to playing Tempest, the arcade game. Wait. Did I just show my age? I was um. Really young when I was in my skating phase. And Cal Skate was one of those retro places like the Corvette Diner in San Diego. Yeah, that's the ticket.

I also keep thinking about my encounter with the King of Pop a few years back during a girlfriend getaway trip to Vegas. My girlfriends and I spent our Saturday lounging by our hotel's pool, soaking up the desert sun. We only had a few hours before we needed to get ready for our evening's festivities, the KISS / Aerosmith show at the MGM Grand. A concert, which, as you may know, requires a LOT of hairspray and playing "this is my favorite KISS song" prior to the show. Nevertheless, we decided we had enough time to quickly dash to The Forum at Caesar's Palace to buy our guilty gifts for the kiddies and hubs we left back home. Our first stop was FAO Schwarz. After about an hour of shopping and riding the spiral escalator from the first to third floors over and over again because it's just plain fun, we noticed the store emptied out of everyone but well . . . us. And when we asked FAO's staff what was going on, they told us Michael Jackson was coming to shop so Caesar's security had to lock down the store. And now, we couldn't leave. Because outside the store, The Forum looked like this:

014_11A.JPG

So yes, that's right. I was locked in a toy store with Michael Jackson! Luckily, we had a camera and Michael graciously allowed us to snap this photo of a lifetime near the candy bins ! (Photo Top of Article)

Of course, having our picture taken with Michael immediately went to our heads. And turned us into goofballs.

015_10A.JPG

What does this have to do with YA writing, you ask ? Well, being locked in a toy store with one of the most famous people in the universe is known as a "coincidence." And far-fetching, unbelievable "coincidences" in a novel's plot supposedly kills the credibility of a story. Agents and editors also, apparently, don't want to hear we, the slush-pile-warriors-yet-to-be-published exclaim to them: "But it really happened that way!"

So my blog post today, dear diner readers, is about being a rebel and breaking the rules. If you want to write a story about a 16-year old misfit character who, in a twist of cosmo weirdness, winds up face-to-face with MJ, run with with story. Create a voice and plot so high-concept, funny-bizarre spectacular, a reader can't Don't-Stop-'Til-You-Get-Enough of your story until the very last period of the manuscript. Maybe your character believes in fate or destiny. Maybe your character despises celebrity chasing because her mom runs with a gossip magazine's paparazzi. Or maybe, your character doesn't shower or put on makeup before she flops from her hotel pool to The Forum. So when she finds herself standing next to a soft spoken, gentle icon that blows all the tabloid junk about him out of the water, she's completely horrified at her personal hygiene. Oh wait. That last example was me.

Rest in peace, Michael. We'll miss you.

I had tons of fun learning how to use my new BOSS RC-300 and BOSS FS-6 Switch Pedal with MJ's The Way You Make Me Feel. With an added channel to record, Undo/Redo switch pedal (alas, with a 2 second delay), and an FX pedal (pitch down effect for bass) I could pretty much have as much fun as I wanted!

Art in the age of Instagram
Jeff Koons’ exhibit is a playground for selfie-takers..

Published on July 1st, 2014

Certain things are catnip for New York’s legion of Instagrammers: a hot new restaurant, art “happenings” like this spring’s Kara Walker sugar sphinx, the semiannual Manhattanage. These are the subjects that jam feeds over the course of a few hours or a few weeks as everyone you follow posts the same exact photo of the same exact thing, same crop, different filter. Those obligatory check-ins prove that they have, in fact, been there, seen that. I ’gram therefore I am.

Installation-view-of-Michael-Jackson-and-Bubbles-1988-Photo-Benjamin-Suttonjpg-600x450.jpg

And so, this summer, get ready to see a lot of Jeff Koons selfies.

Pop artist Jeff Koons is easily the most famous — and most lucrative — living American artist. He’s collaborated with Lady Gaga, and one of his sculptures once went for a record-setting $58 million at auction, a handbag version of which is currently on sale at mass retailer H&M. He got to this point by recasting junk as luxury objects, and casting himself and his then-wife, the porn start Cicciolina, as an erotic Adam and Eve. Now, the most American of American artists is finally getting the retrospective treatment in New York City, the final show at the Whitney Museum of American Art’s Madison Avenue home before it moves downtown next spring.

The exhibition, which opened June 27, is full of the kind of giant, shiny objects that made Koons famous: inflatable bunny rabbits fashioned in polished stainless steel, pristine balloon animals, and other objects chosen precisely for their banality. And selfiests are going to eat it up. Because if there’s anything that the selfie-taker loves more than a mirror, it’s a culturally significant mirror.

Joanne Fiske from Gorleston, Norfolk, with her Michael Jackson hat Photo: ALBANPIX

Hat worn by Michael Jackson worth £25,000, fan told !
7:00AM BST 18 Sep 2009

A Michael Jackson fan has been told a hat she owns, which was once worn by the King of Pop, could be worth £25,000.

Joanne Fiske, of Gorleston, Norfolk, took the black fedora hat to the Antiques Roadshow where it was valued at the staggering price.
Although Mrs Fiske, who won the hat in a newspaper competition in 1991, is a Jackson fan she admits she is tempted to sell the star's head gear.
She told the Eastern Daily Press: 'When they said it was worth a minimum of £25,000 I just could not believe it.
'I am thinking of selling it as the Antiques Roadshow said it was a good time to sell as Michael Jackson was mega news at the moment.'
The show, which was filmed at Somerleyton Hall, Suffolk, last Thursday, will not be aired until next spring.

OMG, I would never sell his hat if it was in my possession. :girl_in_love: I've always wanted one that he actually wore.

Nice thread, really nice thread :)

To be honest, I never really could understand those who screamed and fainted at Michael's concerts/in his presence and I do think some fans can be overprotective of Michael & I stiiill don't really get the whole impersonator phenomenon, but beyond those reservations of mine I cannot help but recognize the beauty of the interaction between Michael and his fans, the energy "exchange" when performing, the joy and the inspiration he provided to so many along the decades. Those are truly positive and really amazing things.

Some years ago I attended a political rally held on a stadium and I remember a politician being overwhelmed by the presence of tens of thousands of people there. One can only imagine the adrenaline rush Michael felt while performing and the energy feedback he got from people enjoying his talents. The most amazing thing about it is the universality of it all; these scenes took place all over the world, wherever he visited. The diversity of Michael's audience is what makes it all so very beautiful - young and old, beggars or billionaires, black or white they all loved him and his music.

I still remember a report from CNN in June 2005 the day after the verdict. They went on the streets of London to ask people how they felt about the outcome of the trial and there was this young woman, in her City attire, all dressed up in her business-suit and she completely took me by surprise with her more than positive attitude. She went something like "oh, I was delighted. Of course he is innocent". I'm still ashamed at being so judgmental. My silly mind couldn't conceive that people in that particular line of work could show such sympathy and understanding. Although not a particularly rewarding experience for my occasionally over-sized ego, it was good and healthy to be proven wrong in my misconceptions.

Michael really did make people feel like ONE - his death made the world feel one in pain, but his was also a music that did not just connect, but made all feel one, one in joy, one in service and in consciousness.

http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co....-the-show-during-pharrell-arena-gig-1-7308624

Sunday 14 June 2015

A LITTLE boy with moves like Michael Jackson stole the show at R&B superstar Pharrell William’s Leeds gig.

Seven-year-old Dylan Barraclough was invited on stage with a group of children for the climax of the concert on Friday night - Williams’ huge hit Happy - but his impressive dance skills saw him take centre stage.Dad Jamie, of Pudsey, told the YEP: “It was Dylan’s first ever gig, and he ended up on stage - it’s going to be hard for him to top it.”

The proud dad filmed the moment and in the video, which has been posted on YouTube, can be heard whooping and cheering as Dylan dances away around a minute into the clip.

As Pharrell notices his MJ-inspired moves, he is brought forward, and Mr Barraclough can be heard shouting: “That’s my boy”.

Dylan, who goes to Southroyd Primary in Pudsey, goes to street dance classes and doesn’t waste an opportunity to practice his moves.Mr Barraclough said: “I was extremely proud, and as you can hear in the clip, a bit emotional!

“Dylan is a little mover - even when I’m paying for my shopping in Asda, he’ll be over by the Guide Dogs’ collection box doing a little wiggle. He’s a huge music fan and will listen to anything but he’s obsessed with Michael Jackson. He spends hours watching videos of him dancing on YouTube.”
