LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles city attorney's office is investigating how the city can legally press third parties to pick up at least some of the costs for Michael Jackson's memorial service at the Staples Center.
City attorney spokesman John Franklin said Wednesday that his office aims to have a report ready for the City Council by Friday.
More than 17,000 fans attended the pop star's public memorial service on Tuesday. The event is estimated to cost up to $4 million in overtime for hundreds of police officers and other services.
AEG Live, which owns the Staples Center, hasn't committed any money to cover the city's bill. AEG Live spokesman Michael Roth didn't immediately return a message Wednesday morning.

I understand the city is poor, but give me a break. Let the family mourn their loss before you all start looking for money

Yeah, and they really didn't need to have hundreds of police officers standing side by side anyway. They just assumed things would get out of hand. The Jackson family didn't tell them to do that, so why should they have to pay for it? Besides, look at how much money was brought to the city by everyone who was there, eating and getting hotels, etc.

The media just looks for every bad angle they can get in a MJ situation. Sickos!

I think they should ask the Jackson family to chip in, not the public. They could easily come up with a few million to help out.

Michael brought a lot of money to Los Angeles in the past and this is the thanks he gets? Some people really have no sense of history.

Michael and this event brought money to the city, as in the stores and people and merchants, not the city council. They are broke and had to spend about 4 million on this. I can see where they are coming from.

yes, i actually heard that the city is breaking EVEN on this event...fans spent a lot of money there and offset the costs

Exactly. It is not the family's responsibility to pay the city one dime. Any more than it is our responsibility to pay the city if we attend a Lakers game in the Staples Center. It is the cops' job to assess a situation and provide coverage if they feel they have to. This is what Californians pay taxes for. They can't then turn around and ask certain people to "chip in". As if those people had anything to do with their decision to be there.

Did they ask the families of any other celebrity to chip in? Cause if they didn't, then they need to leave the Jacksons alone.

This is just another way for the media to attack the Jackson family. The city should be grateful to the fans for not causing any incidents for them to worry about.

LA asks fans to help cover costs of Michael Jackson's memorial

The city of Los Angeles is trying to find ways to help cover the costs of hosting Michael Jackson's memorial service held yesterday (July 7) at the Staples Center in downtown LA.

A spokesperson for the city attorney's office said that it may have cost the financially troubled city up to $4 million to cover the costs of police overtime and other services.

As a result, the city has set up a website( http://mayor.lacity.org/PressRoom/PressReleases/LACITYP_005598 ) where fans can make tax-deductible donations to offset the costs. It is also investigating ways it can legally make third parties pay for some of the bill, reports the Associated Press.

An estimated 17,000 people attended the memorial service in Los Angeles yesterday. Police anticipated that 250,000 people would converge on the streets near the Staples Center and deployed more than 3,000 officers to deal with the crowds beginning at 2:00 am PST. When only a small fraction of that number appeared, several officers were dismissed in an effort to cut costs.

Still the city is being criticised for spending an inordinate amount of money buying lunch for the officers.

The citizens of the state are already taxed for things like this.

We should still help them out, They went above and beyond with the memorial. The memorial was not mandatory, it was a gift from the state of LA. We should all contribute, not just the citizens of LA
