Re: Update: MJ Estate files supplement to their complaint against Melissa Johnson and HTWF
Maybe I'm the only one here, but I'm not too upset with the outcome as TMZ described it. I would like HTW to be re-established in its original form and perhaps with the 20% income of the Estate, they could really make a positive contribution to the world and remind people of Michael's charitable legacy. As I understand it, the HTW foundation is like a fund that distributes its donations to various charities, right? And they are forced to demonstrate where exactly the donations go to, so if it turns out that they aren't spending enough on charitable endeavours we would all know about it.
Back when HTW was still active, it achieved incredible things and helped many people - particularly children - around the world. It got shut down due to unfortunate circumstances, but I am sure Michael would have no problem resurrecting this charity as long as it is run correctly and the donations actually go to good causes. Under Johnson's supervision, this was clearly not the case. But I have good hope that things will be handled correctly this time. The Estate has been very professional so far so I don't question their competences. Plus, they know they're under public scrutiny now.
Since all trademarks are transferred to the Estate (as they should be) I don't see where Mann fits in. As I understand it, the Estate is now officially and without contest the owner of Michael's image and likeness. So if Mann were to sue the Estate for these rights, he would have no chance. I hope we don't have to hear from him anymore... although I doubt he would let Johnson/Katherine get away with this so easily. After all, he did invest thousands of dollars in this venture and paid their legal bills.
The only part I dislike is Johnson's involvement in the charity. However, we don't know in what capacity she is involved. Since the Estate has full control over HTW now and their statements in the past show that they don't hold Johnson in high regard, I doubt she is awarded an influential position. She probably has a very minor role (and could of course be fired when she doesn't fulfill it to the Estate's liking), which I guess is better than nothing for Johnson, hence her willingness to settle.
Maybe this outcome is better than an ugly legal battle played out in the media (who are fully enjoying this spectacle) and it might benefit Katherine's health too... too much stress is never good for an 80+ year old. Also, this shows the Estate's willingness to cooperate with the family on certain issues so perhaps they won't be as bitter about them in the future.
I'll wait for further details though
