American Idol - Haley Reinhart performs EARTH SONG!

Haley Reinhart is moved by Michael Jackson's Earth Song. It's a plaintive message song, miles different from what we've seen from Haley the past few weeks. Like last week's Lady Gaga song, it's quite a risk. Can she pull it off?

Aesthetically, I'd say yes. She sounds just lovely, packing the song with plenty of emotion, and the choir that comes down the stairs halfway through doesn't hurt, either. She may overplay the shouting a bit, but, overall, it's a strong addition to her repertoire.

"I really felt that it did inspire you," Jennifer says. However, she's not sure it measured up to the bar that James set. "That song has a beautiful message, no doubt," she says, but adds that she needs to keep in mind the songs that the other contestants are choosing.

Randy thinks Jennifer's right. "The song doesn't really suit you or fit you." He also says she was screaming, and Haley's shooting daggers. "That wasn't the top of my range," she retorts. "I was just feeling it."

Steven Tyler says not to listen to Jennifer or Randy. "What do you get from that?" he asks. "They're both wrong. ... It wasn't a hit song, but you hit it, you nailed it."

I find it hilarious that JLo would critique this girl like that, when she herself can't sing. Senorita autotune needs to sit down.

I think this girl wanted to do this as a tribute to MJ and she felt inspired by the song which was the point. Steven Tyler on the other hand loved it. :)

Yeah one word: No.

I watched it and was shaking my head throughout the entire performance. It lacked passion and was just wrong. Haley is a a good singer (imho) BUT she should never have touched this song (or any of his songs for that matter). YOU DO NOT TOUCH A MICHAEL FLIPPIN' JACKSON SONG PERIOD! THE. END. I know it inspired her and all, but yeah no honey just no. LOL.

Steven is just in love with her voice which is cool but in this instance Steven (whom I ADORE) was unable to seperate himself and hear what was obvious...Love him to death btw. Beautiful man, beautiful. Hehehe.

O/T but I devised a drinking game where every time Steven Tyler says the word "Beautiful" on IDOL you have to take a drink...it'll get you pretty buzzed...LOL!

Yeah, I like the fact she was inspired by Michael but her performance was pretty bad.

Yes to echo others the inspiration was nice and I appreciated that but yes the performance was just wrong...

And again O/T BUT YES Steven is one sexy man...and I only watch for him. I've been a fan/admirer of Steven Tyler and Aerosmith for years and I've always loved how quirky, funny, and just flat out awesome he is and I'm glad people who wouldn't typically know much about him are seeing him as I and MILLIONS of others have seen him for years. LOL. Is it wrong I've thought he was sexy from way back when I was like 10 or 11...LOL! ANYWAY...

AND BTW I AM SOOO stealing that animated GIF too...hehehe...**saves to desktop**

Loved the inspiration behind it but hated the performance.

It made me go: "Oh, honey...honey no...just no!"

:lol: :hysterical: That gif. That's pretty much how I felt about the performance. I like Haley (although Lauren is my favorite), but this was not the song for her. AT. ALL.

I would have been long dead of alcohol poisoning by now. At times during this season I have had to seriously question his judgment on certain performances.

Jennifer and Randy were way too harsh on Haley. Scotty's second song was pure crap and those two brushed it off. I look at Lauren and see Britney Spears. She is not ready for the bright lights. Hope she goes on to university, delaying her singing career.

LOL...On the few instances that I didn't understand his critiques...LOL...I truly believe he was just unable to separate himself from the performance and the fact that he loved the voice of the person performing...He's a BEAUTIFUL person what can I say....hehehe...Beautiful man...Beautiful...

Reading the comments here I expected something really awful. LOL I didn't think it was that bad at all. She did well.
 
Just listened to her performance and I have to say I don't know who she is as I was'nt in the least bit interested in IDOL this year, but from what I just heard, she was just okay, got a bit screechy in some areas, she did'nt hit this one out the park.
 
It ticks me off how they downplay some performances because the songs performed weren't a "hit", while someone else can do a song that is even less known and the judges won't say the same thing to them. The average person knows Earth Song over those Alan Jackson and Martina Macbride songs that came after Hailey's performance.
 
Earth song may not have been a "hit" , it was to me :D
 
That was one of the worst performance of Earth Song I have ever seen! She screamed to much instead of singing.
 
On what planet was earth song not a hit? I just read that j-lo said it wasn't a popular enough song..., what planet is she on? Havn't seen it and on't intend to. Nobody else should sing that song.... Nobody us ever going to be able to do it justice.
 
I liked it. Obviously we cannot compare with MJ. Its so funny to hear J.Lo comments since she can never possibly sing half as good as this girl. Her latest song has awful vocals.
 
Earth Song wasn't a big hit only in America, but it was MASSIVE everywhere else in the world.

MJ's song are mostly pretty hard to pull off, especially if you compare it to the way MJ would perform it. Nobody on this earth would be able to do it like him. The girl wasn't horrible, she wasn't singing off key, she had emotion, I think she did well overall.
 
So goes the power of suggestion. I heard it was terrible, and was expecting it to be unbearable, but when I watched, it wasn't that bad to me. That's an extremely difficult song for anybody I guess. My baby was just so one of a kind.
 
Yeah I didn't understand the whole "not a hit" thing...BUT I attribute to like Steven saying that because I honestly don't think he listens to the kind of music Michael is known for so I just chalk him saying that to needing to be educated, because I for one remember it being everywhere on MTv and all that jazz here in the states(chart wise it may not have been the biggest hit), but I also know world wide it was HUGE. So yeah I was thinking, "Oh Steven honey I need to sit you down and have a little chat with you...amongst other things..." :shifty: LOL! Not saying he doesn't know his ish because dude does but with this matter he needs a little educating. Not too sure what was going on with Jennifer...**shrugs** I also know Randy mentioned it was a hit several moments later...So there you go.

Seriously though I do not understand why some of the people on Idol insist on doing a Michael song...**shakes head** Trust me Michael is VERY inspiring (as we all know) and his music (also inspiring) is timeless but NO ONE can pull off an MJ song doing it justice, NO ONE.

I have a feeling Haley is leaving tonight and yeah...she's a decent singer but girl overall is the weakest of the four (and I am NOT into Scotty AT ALL) so yeah...She'll be ok no matter what happens, but girl should have reconsidered her song choice...yikes.
 
I liked the few performances I saw about her but I didnt like this one, you cant hear the passion and feelings Michael put on Earth Song. Of course it also feels empty withouth the hooooo's lol
 
weird i thought it was full with emotions love th choire and altough i believe the cover from Delta goodrem was better, i think its great thats she does this: earth song, is also about protecting the earth and i heared that 24 mil people watch idols there in the us so good thing she did and all those people here the lyrics and thats ok for me :)

Ps why did Randy did his fingers like that when he said great michael? in our country it means sarcasim?

It wasn't anything towards Michael, he was being "ironic" or in a way sarcastic about how others sound like Michael or something to that effect, not 100% on what was said exactly but TRUST ME it wasn't anything against Michael. I would have been the first to be all "Oh HELL NO." LOL. I need to re-watch that to be sure what he was saying exactly. Maybe I'll go re-watch it.
