Re: Jury Selection New and Discussion

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The doctor charged in Michael Jackson's death is returning to court to meet the first batch of potential jurors who may eventually decide whether to convict him of involuntary manslaughter.
It will be the second time this year that a judge, prosecutors and attorneys for Dr. Conrad Murray try to pick a panel to hear the case, which is expected to last four to six weeks and will put the spotlight on the King of Pop's final moments once again.
Roughly 160 people are expected will undergo an initial screening Thursday to see if they're available to serve during the lengthy criminal trial. Those who are able will then fill out a 30-page questionnaire aimed at determining their level of knowledge of the case and any strong opinions about Jackson or Murray.
Getting an eligible pool of jurors took three days earlier this year, and Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor begrudgingly dismissed them in May when he agreed to delay Murray's trial to give his attorneys more time to prepare.
This time, Pastor hopes to find 100 people to fill out the questionnaire, court spokeswoman Mary Hearn said. Prosecutors and defense attorneys will have several days to scrutinize the responses before direct questioning of potential jurors begins on Sept. 23.
Finding people who hadn't heard about the case was a challenge last time - only one person, who didn't speak English, expressed no knowledge of the case. Awareness of a high-profile case is not automatic grounds for disqualification from jury service, and Pastor has expressed confidence that a group can be found who will listen to the evidence impartially and also ignore widespread media coverage of the trial.
Jackson's death on June 25, 2009 stunned the world. The singer had been in final preparations for a series of comeback concerts in London, and the focus quickly turned to Murray, his personal physician.
In an interview with detectives, Murray admitted giving Jackson the anesthetic propofol to help him sleep, but authorities and Murray's attorneys differ on the timeline of events that occur in Jackson's rented mansion on the day he died.
Authorities contend that Murray gave Jackson a lethal dose of propofol and other sedatives, but the doctor's attorneys have said Murray did not give the singer anything that should have killed him. In pretrial motions and hearings they have suggested that Jackson administered the lethal dose to himself.
The Houston-based cardiologist faces up to four years and the loss of his medical license if convicted.
The case is expected to be highly-technical, but not without its share of Hollywood touches. Jackson's family will attend the proceedings - with some members taking a break to watch a planned tribute concert in October - and prosecutors also plan to show clips of the singer shot during his final rehearsals.

It's probably going to be similar but not the same.

You can post the old questionnaire as a reference and to see what to expect. It's fine.

All potential jurors in Conrad Murray trial aware of case

As jury selection got underway Thursday, Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor asked the approximately 160 prospective jurors if anyone had not heard of the case they may be asked to decide -- the involuntary manslaughter trial of Michael Jackson's doctor, Conrad Murray.

Not one person raised a hand.

"We didn't expect that you've been living under a rock for the last few years, or you'd made a pit stop here from Mars," Pastor quipped in the downtown Los Angeles courtroom.

The last time the judge had polled a jury pool, only one person said she had not heard of the case -- and the woman did not speak English.

Pastor cautioned potential panelists that because of the extensive publicity surrounding the case, they were going to have to take care to avoid any outside information about the trial -- especially in navigating the Web.

They are not to post any messages on social media, send or read Tweets or Google information about the case, he said. If they do, they could face jail time or fines for contempt of court.

"I certainly realize that for many of us, searching the Internet is as easy as breathing," he said.

Pastor told the prospective jurors that he had the option of ordering the panel sequestered throughout the trial, but had chosen not to. He said he was "reiterating [his] faith" in the jurors in doing so.

Instead, the jury deciding the case will be bused to the court from a secret location each morning, and escorted away every night. Jurors will not be allowed to leave the courthouse during the day, and will be served lunch at the court.

Jurors warned to keep mum about trial of Michael Jackson's doctor
By Alan Duke, CNN

NEW: "Disobedience will not be tolerated," the judge told the jury pool
More than 400 potential jurors will be questioned to find a fair jury
Dr. Conrad Murray is charged with causing Michael Jackson's death
Opening statements are set for September 27
Los Angeles (CNN) -- The judge warned potential jurors Thursday in the trial of Michael Jackson's doctor they could face jail if they violate his order not to talk to anyone about the case, including with "telepathic communication."
The search began Thursday for 18 Los Angeles County citizens who can put aside what they've heard about the pop star's death so they can sit in judgment of Dr. Conrad Murray, who is charged with involuntary manslaughter.
"Disobedience will not be tolerated. It can undermine our system of justice," Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor told the potential jurors. "Violation of my orders can lead to an unjust verdict, a mistrial, emotional turmoil and distress."
Pastor's order also bans jurors from researching the case online, or using a dictionary or the Bible, he said.
"Things on the Internet can be inaccurate and misleading," Pastor said. "We have this need today to share information with 750 million other people we don't even know. We don't know their agenda or the truth of what they say on the Internet."
When the judge asked for a show of hands from anyone who has not heard of the case, no hands were raised.
In all, up to 450 potential jurors will report to the courthouse in downtown Los Angeles between Thursday and Monday for the selection process in the trial.
When Murray was introduced to the first group of 160 potential jurors Thursday, he stood up and said "Good morning, ladies and gentlemen." Many of them responded in unison, "Good morning."
Pastor's first task is to decide who in the pool of potential jurors likely would not endure the duration of the trial. While the 12 jurors and six alternates will be allowed to return home after court each day, the five weeks or more of testimony can take a toll on their finances and families.
For a hardship to cause someone to be dismissed it "must be extreme," the judge said.
Those who are kept are being given about 30 pages of questions to determine if they are qualified to be on the jury.
They will return September 23 for face-to-face questioning by lawyers as the final list of jurors is chosen.
Opening statements for the trial, which will be televised, are scheduled for September 27. The judge told the jury pool he expects their service will be over on or about October 28.

Who support Murray at the court house ?

some paitent ( i guess) that has known him 30 years. its mentioned in the latest la times article thats been updated from earlier

The potential jurors were then asked to fill out forms about whether serving on the jury would impose hardship on them.
Outside court, a lone supporter for Murray carried a sign reading: "I support Dr. Conrad Murray, an innocent man who must be exonerated."

Willie L. Hampton, 55, who said he was a friend of Murray's of three decades, said he shook hands with the many Jackson fans and agreed to keep peace.

Murray faces up to four years in prison for allegedly causing the death of his famous patient by overdose on a surgical anesthetic. The main trial is expected to begin later this month with opening statements.

Dozens of potential Jackson case jurors dismissed
By LINDA DEUTSCH , 09.08.11, 07:30 PM EDT

LOS ANGELES -- More than half of the first panel of prospective jurors for the manslaughter trial of Michael Jackson's doctor were dismissed because of hardship claims Thursday, signaling a long search ahead for those who will serve in the five-week trial.

And it is yet unclear how many prospects will be excused for disclosing strong opinions about Jackson, defendant Dr. Conrad Murray and the high profile case with which all potential panelists are familiar.

When the judge asked whether anyone in the jury room was unaware of case, not a single hand was raised.

A larger than expected contingent of 187 prospects showed up for questioning Thursday. Court officials said that of those, 115 were dismissed and 72 remained to fill out lengthy questionnaires probing their views of the case in which Murray is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the pop star's death. Murray has pleaded not guilty in the case.

A new panel of prospects was on call for Friday morning and questioning could continue Monday if a sufficient pool has not been cleared by then. The judge has said he wants 100 prospects available who have no problems with hardship and no views on their questionnaires extreme enough to require dismissal.

Those who reported for duty Thursday appeared ready for the news delivered to them by Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor: They had been summoned to serve on Los Angeles' biggest trial of the year - the involuntary manslaughter trial of Michael Jackson's doctor.
