Michael Jackson's Secret World: Willing Doctors, Hospital-Grade Sedatives

By ALICE GOMSTYN (@AliceGomstyn) and CHRIS CONNELLY
Nov. 4, 2011

The involuntary manslaughter trial of Dr. Conrad Murray, the cardiologist accused of causing the death of Michael Jackson, has offered a glimpse of the pop icon's secret world -- one dominated by powerful prescription drugs that ultimately claimed his life.In Murray's trial, the prosecution argued that the array of drugs that Murray prescribed Jackson -- the anesthetic propofol, as well as the pre-anesthetic drug midazolam and lorazepam, an anti-anxiety drug -- and Murray's failure to properly monitor his patient was a recipe for disaster.Jackson died on June 25, 2009, after receiving a fatal dose of propofol. The defense claimed that Jackson injected himself with the lethal dose and that Murray had been trying to wean Jackson off of propofol. He prescribed it, lawyers said, to combat Jackson's insomnia, which, the defense said, was a side effect of Jackson's prior dependence on the narcotic painkiller Demerol.Jackson used to be injected with that drug by his dermatologist, Dr. Arnold Klein, during painful dermatology treatments and, perhaps, by others.Klein told ABC News' Jim Avila that redacted medical records presented during Murray's trial about Jackson receiving Demerol were not his records, though he conceded that he gave Jackson Demerol. However, he added, it would be "nonsense" to believe Jackson was dependent on the drug."He was never addicted to narcotics," Klein said. "People have drugs of choice, sir. His choice was propofol."Klein called propofol a "highly dangerous" drug that should not be used for sleep."But, unfortunately, when you're at that level of wealth, doctors will do anything for you," Klein said. "So I'm just telling you that this has been a long problem."

While it was barred from being discussed at Murray's trial, Jackson's issues with prescription drugs and enabling doctors went back years."He was getting a number of different prescriptions from a number of different names," said spiritual guru and former endocrinologist Deepak Chopra, a friend of Jackson's. "This is a common thing amongst celebrity addicts because they demand what they want and there are certain kinds of doctors who will give it to them."Frank Cascio, a longtime friend of Jackson's, said the singer was like a father to him. But in later years, Cascio said, he took it upon himself to keep Jackson's enabling doctors at bay, as he describes in his book, "My Friend Michael," which will be published Nov. 15.Read more about Frank Cascio's book, "My Friend Michael," here."Don't get me wrong. There were some great doctors," Cascio said. "There were some doctors that were absolutely fantastic."But then there were, as Cascio calls them, the "random people" -- doctors, he said, who saw Jackson as "a money pit.""They were just selfish, disgusting doctors that knew they would get paid," Cascio said. "They would, like, push [medications] on him because they knew he would pay them."As a teen, Cascio was on tour with Jackson with Mexico City in 1993 when Jackson was swept off to rehab by his good friend, screen legend Elizabeth Taylor."Elizabeth takes us aside and says to us, 'We're going to get him out of the country after the show. He's going to go to London,'" Cascio remembered.Jackson would later release a videotaped statement to his fans, announcing he had undergone "treatment for a dependency on pain medications."Years later, Cascio began working for Jackson. He said he would keep Jackson's stashes of the anti-anxiety drug Xanax, the narcotic painkiller Percocet or the sedative Valium out of Jackson's reach at night."I wanted to always make sure I had them with me and not have anything in his room where he didn't wake up and say, 'I can't sleep tonight,' and not realize what he's taking. I was trying to think 10 steps ahead," Cascio said.Jackson, he said, resorted to certain medications when he "just wanted to escape all the chaos."Cascio said the drug he worried about most was Demerol."I didn't like what it did to him at all," Cascio said. "There was a change in personalities, especially when you saw him coming down from it and, you know, he became a different person."Cascio said Jackson became angry, bitter and "mad at everyone just taking advantage of him.""That's not a person that I was very fond of," he said. "That's not a person that I know that he wasn't fond of."

In November 2000, Cascio said, a house doctor at a New York City hotel was all too willing to provide Jackson with meds.
"The house doctor gave him what he wanted," Cascio said. "And, again, the house doctor was in awe and so intrigued just to be around this man."
Cascio confronted Jackson, but to no avail.
"I said, 'You don't want to end up like Elvis, do you?' And [he said] 'I would never end up like Elvis. I don't have a problem,'" Cascio said. "He was upset that I would even bring this up and talk to him about this."
Jackson's sister, Rebbie Jackson, and brother, Tito Jackson, said earlier this week that they too tried to get through to Jackson. Tito Jackson said his brother's security team got in the way.
"I got into physical fights with his security team," he said. "The public didn't know, but we did many times try and they kept him away like he was the president of the United States."
Cascio described Michael Jackson as a "situational addict."
In the weeks leading up to his death, that addiction seemed to include propofol, also known as Diprivan, a powerful anesthetic injected intravenously, often used to sedate patients before surgery.
Chopra remembered Jackson asking him about the drug.
"On one occasion ... he said to me, 'Deepak, did you know there's something that takes you right to the edge, to the valley of death, and it brings you back? Do you know anything about it?'" Chopra said.
On May 12, 2009, Murray put in a staggering bulk order for propofol -- more than 40 gallons worth. Jackson died some seven weeks later after receiving a fatal dose of the drug.
"It was a pharmaceutical experiment on Michael Jackson," prosecutor David Walgren said during his closing argument on Thursday. "It was an obscene experiment in 2009 done by a doctor with no sleep medicine training. It was criminal gross negligence."
Many music legends have died from accidental drug overdoses, but only Michael Jackson had a doctor by his side.
Cascio, who believes Murray should be in jail, said Jackson once confided in him that he feared he would die from a gunshot. But, Cascio said, no one would have ever thought that a shot of a prescription drug would claim Jackson's life so prematurely.

It is a damn shame Deepak is allowed to get away with that doctor shopping story. I love how he places himself into situations about Michael a guy he had not seen in four years before he died. Such a fake

THIS is Frank's way of keeping his promise to Michael and clearing up misconceptions?

Re: Frank Cascio to write memoir of his friend Michael Jackson / press release at pg12 / Nov 15 ,201

OH LORD does Frank realize he just confirmed or sinuated what so many wanna here and that is MJ was an addict. He is gonna raise more questions then clearing anything up, I'm telling ya'll. UGH Funny that on Oprah the Cascio's were denying anything like this an acted surprise to find out about MJ and drugs...WTF?!

And what the hell is a "situational addict?" Give me a break. He is trying to go around what he really means!

Re: Frank Cascio to write memoir of his friend Michael Jackson / press release at pg12 / Nov 15 ,201

I'm very shocked Frank would say something like this ESPECIALLY during a verdict watch for God's sake.

(I seriously hope the jury didn't watch this segment)

He could have promoted his book some other way....

Re: Frank Cascio to write memoir of his friend Michael Jackson / press release at pg12 / Nov 15 ,201

Can't wait to hear how some who damn the Jacksons try to give Cascio the benifit of the doubt for doin the same crap. SMFH

Re: Frank Cascio to write memoir of his friend Michael Jackson / press release at pg12 / Nov 15 ,201

Look we can't act like Michael did not struggle with pills at some points in his life we all know it and he admitted it. And I doubt anyone on the jury saw this and if they did so what. What does this have to do with the case? Frank unlike some at the very least gave a date 2000 nine years before Michael died a year after Michael fell and hurt his back whatever he struggled with in the early 00's we know he had it under control before he died

That's true.

Re: Frank Cascio to write memoir of his friend Michael Jackson / press release at pg12 / Nov 15 ,201

The timing sucks. And it's a special that as to do with also talking about the trial that involves drugs. So u tell me how people gonna perecive this info to mean. You think their gonna give a damn if it was yrs ago? No they are not.

Re: Frank Cascio to write memoir of his friend Michael Jackson / press release at pg12 / Nov 15 ,201

And something else I just picked up on after reading this. Frank seems to be saying that the problem was doctors who wanted give Michael anything he asked for so they could get paid. He appears to be talking about a hotel doctor or a doctor who might have treated Michael on the road. Michael's regular doctors like Metzger and even Klein were not the issue the issue it seems

Being a fan for longer then five minutes you ought to know better then to worry about what other people think. The timing sucks there is never going to be a great time to talk about someone's drug issues

Re: Frank Cascio to write memoir of his friend Michael Jackson / press release at pg12 / Nov 15 ,201

Oh please tell that to MJ's family and friends that knew him for yrs because they obviously want people to know what their thinking. That's why they keep given interviews and writting books. And the timeing sucks because the defense wants people to think the very thing MJ family and his friends keep talking about. I know MJ had his issues but these people are revealing far more beyond 93's rehab while a verdict hasn't even been reached yet. So excuse me if that worries me.

The trial is over I doubt the defense cares about what people think of Michael there focus should be on what does the jury think of the evidence not what the public thinks of Michael. Frank calling Michael a situational addict makes no sense and just confirms my belief that he is a total dunce. Michael's family want people to think Michael had a problem lets be honest here because number one they have no idea what was going on around Michael and for them to admit that would mean the world would know that Michael did not want them around and number two there is this matter of a lawsuit. I think the only reason Janet came back home for that time was because she wanted to be there when Randy Phillips was on the stand maybe she thought her presence would unnerve him clearly she was wrong if that is what she was thinking. When the Jacksons lose this lawsuit maybe then they will shut up

Re: Frank Cascio to write memoir of his friend Michael Jackson / press release at pg12 / Nov 15 ,201

The trial may be over, but we still don't have a verdict. I just wish that they would all shut up until a verdict is reached at least. I thought that it was the wrong time for Tito and Rebbie to talk about Michael and drugs and I think that it's the wrong time for Frank to be doing it too. But I guess there is no wrong time when there are $ to be made and a project to promote. Neither the Jackson or Frank get a pass from me.

Re: Frank Cascio to write memoir of his friend Michael Jackson / press release at pg12 / Nov 15 ,201

I hope so on the part of the jury but they ain't and never was sequestered so one never knows. And what u said about Frank and MJ's fam is the very reason why I think they should just shut up IMO.

Re: Frank Cascio to write memoir of his friend Michael Jackson / press release at pg12 / Nov 15 ,201

Oh I def agree they all should shut up until after we get a verdict because even if the jury pays this no attention shut up anyway it just looks bad

Re: Frank Cascio to write memoir of his friend Michael Jackson / press release at pg12 / Nov 15 ,201

I wish that I could put a muzzle on all of them. If they were all so concerned, why didn't they say anything when Michael was alive? Talking now doesn't help Michael.

Re: Frank Cascio to write memoir of his friend Michael Jackson / press release at pg12 / Nov 15 ,201

This is so funny..

He actually said it was about how MJ was portrayed and his desire to correct those misconceptions. That was his promise to Michael . He told me that after people read his book for example there would not be a single person on earth that believe that Michael was a pedophile and that he would have cleared it up for good.

Here it comes, the blonde chick on Michael's arm, everyday a different one .

And of course, most likely Frank would provided them for him.:puke:

If he thinks that portraying Michael as a playboy it'll change people's mind he's a fool.

Re: Frank Cascio to write memoir of his friend Michael Jackson / press release at pg12 / Nov 15 ,201

I dont care who writes a book or if they recieve compensation for it as long as it is positive and shows Michael
as a wonderful human being. We have to many negative and we need more positive for HIStory sake..

So you don't care if is true or not.
And the fact that he makes money taking advantage of the fact that he was Michael's friend for so many years?

We already know how an amazing and wonderful person Michael was.Who didn't know that by know for sure they don't care to find out.
I could write a book about how wonderful of a human being Michael is and full with positive things about him.But who's gonna buy my book? Not even fans.

I am not buying his fake motives for writing this book anyway.

And Frank is not a full.
Sex and drugs, that's how you sell a book.:puke:

I'm very dissapointed with Frank talking like he did in that interview.
I'm sorry but that is not going to help show the real Michael, all it does is make people believe the whole constant addict thing.
I would have thought Frank would realise that and not throw Michael under the bus like this.
It has nothing to do with wanting to believe Michael never had problems, but how do you go from saying one thing on Oprah and now spreading these stories?
The only way he can set this straight is if in the book he tells the full stories, like why he even needed painkillers in the first place. (Although really why go there anyway)

Still waiting to see the book first before judging (maybe he will redeem himself?) but I definitly expected more from him than this...

Btw I found it ironic that Frank said he hated the way Michael would become after coming down from certain painkillers because he would "get mad at everybody using him".....uhm isn't that the truth though?
I don't blame Michael for getting angry about something like that.

He can take his book and shove it.

So who watched to 20/20 segment. was it bad.its nice that those who claim to love mj seem to be doing everything poss to help get murray off. no winder mjs gone with ppl like this around him

Re: Frank Cascio to write memoir of his friend Michael Jackson / press release at pg12 / Nov 15 ,201

i may be naive but i think frank is just being faire. he does say murray should go to jail.
don't get me wrong. the timing it totally off. but still i don't get the vibe that he means any harm. i could be wrong thought

Some of you seemingly fail to understand that Frank and Eddie Cascio are two seperate individuals who make their own decisions. To say that Frank had a hand in the current track controversy, other than him producing the initial Porte songs, is pure speculation.

And while Bashir finally admitted, after Michael's death might I add, lets not act as if he's more morally correct than any Cascio. We all know he created, chopped and edited that film with the malicious intent of getting Michael caught up in scandal.

Thank You!
I really couldn't believe someone would make this comparison!
Just because that hypocrite said some words after MJ passed!

Bashir & Cascios: 2 different universes.
Who & why shoul someone compare the two??

Bashir was initially the one who brought MJ the 2nd trial.
Cascios where THE 1st FAMILY OF LOVE to MJ!

SOME hardcore fans think Eddie betrayed MJ after his passing.
I don't.

Some say Frank is a fool when he wants to put beautiful women next to MJ, because of exaggeration.
The other scream when he tells about situational dependency on medication.

If he tells the truth & i think he will, one has to just handle the truth!

The truth should be told!
Michael Jackson was the greatest musician & entertainer that ever lived & to me HE ALSO WAS THE GREATEST PERSON IN THE WHOLE WORLD!
But NOBODY is perfect, even MJ was not perfect. The truth should be told & everybody should be able to handle it!

If MJ ocationally relied on medication to numb his pain, HE IS ONE OF THE FEW PEOPLE, who i understand to do this, BY ALL HE WAS PUT THROUGH, BY ALL HE HAD TO ENDURE for being this wonderful man that he was!

I'm looking forward to Franks Book, it will be a great read!

I LOVE YOU MOST, MICHAEL JACKSON!

While he was alive. Now they have become another batch leeching off a dead man's tits.

Maybe Oprah was right, asking them if MJ bought them gifts. They might have been faking all along to stay in his good grace. i mean, these people are from Jersey...not Hollywood

Now we should question everything and everyone.

For frank to portray Michael liked that at this time when jury deliberations are going on?! I dont give a damn about Michael's depedency issues in the early 2000s, because they had NO RELATION whatsoever to his death, that was 9 years prior to his death.
Fans know Michael was struggling with that in the late 90s early 00s. But what exactly is Frank trying to achieve by portraying Michael as a drug, and sex addict now?! The Jury is delibarting for FFS, so what is he aiming, he claimed to clear up Michael's name, when the truth couldn't be any further from it. He is doing this to fill up his own pockets, playing into the hands of media, at such a crucial time. SMDH. I tried to give him the benefit of a doubt for the longest time, but not anymore. Enough is enough.

In this world, in Michael's world no one can be trusted, not a single person, I expect everyone and anyone to write a book and sell him out like that, I guess I have to thank God that Michael's family members actually know jack about Mcihael's private life, or what he was doing privately for the past 20 years, cuz if they knew their books would have said even worse stuff about him.
You know what? I'm glad Frank Dileo wasn't able to finish his book, not saying I'm glad he died, but I'm glad he couldn't finish his book, cuz God knows what it would have said, so yeah I'm glad he took all those 'names' into his grave as he said.
