Xscape chart positions. (incl. singles)

In my opinion, if we really want to change something in this situation, we should bomb Billboard with emails to askbb@billboard.com (if it doesn't work, use Gary.Trust@billboard.com).
We should cite the Madonna case and the MJ case, explaining that both their albums were sold at their shows with tickets (in the MJ case, you could choose tickets or T-Shirts), but the two albums were treated in two different ways. The copies sold at the show were counted only for Madonna's album.
Furthermore, we should spread the word on Facebook and Twitter convincing other people to bomb Billboard with emails and spread the word on their contacts.

If we don't move, the situation will remain this and in the future, we could have other swindles.

Michael Jackson Album Hits Number 1 in a Squeaker Win

by Roger Friedman - May 21, 2014 8:32 pm

Michael Jackson fans really came through for their beloved star. The “Xscape” album beat the new release from the Black Keys and took the number 1 spot for last week. Jackson sold around 570 more albums than the Black Keys with a total of 161,909 sales (that’s physical CDs and digital downloads).

That number isn’t very high, but overall CD and digital sales are way down anyway as opposed to streaming. Nevertheless “Xscape” sales are not strong, certainly nothing like any number of contemporary and or living artists.

Did the hologram help? It doesn’t seem like it. As I wrote yesterday there was no sales bounce from the Billboard awards. But give Michael his due. He’s number 1 for his debut week. We’ll see if he can hold off Coldplay’s new album this week.

^^It seems Roger is talking about the report we had on Tuesday. I wonder where he was today, Wednesday whe the BB report came out? Maybe he was still typing.

I wish I did not hear about this 9000 thing because it is not very clear about what exactly happened. Didn't someone post above that she went to the show and they had Xscape on sale and few bought it? Maybe I should go back and read what she said. Oh well Michael is #1 in several countries worldwide and the estate has more ideas up their sleeves.

I guess it's worth a shot at directly questioning Billboard. At least maybe we could get them to officially answer it on record.

The CD price went up on Amazon. it's now $16.88 ($14.99 previously)

What does Hitsdaily have to say about the discrepancy. I mean you lose credibility if you post rankings but your rankings are not accurate.

It doesn't use SoundScan sales. It is another chart with different data.

Yeah I know that, but what do they have to say about giving wrong information. Unless they feel their information is correct.

It's not a wrong information. If you change the point of sales that you take in exam to compile a chart, the result is different. HDD and Billboard don't cover the same shops. Some are different and they make difference with the final result.

Memfan what is the exact information on this bundle. We need to know so we know how to act, and we need to act as soon as possible.

Everyone is talking about the ONE show. Same thing happened at the IMMORTAL WORLD TOUR. The deluxe album was available for free, if fans made any $20 purchase at the Immortal store in the arena.

I got the lanyard, magnet and journal along with the deluxe CD. You can see my other post in this thread which explains the magical day. GETTING THE ALBUM BEFORE ANYONE IN THE USA...XSCAPE WAS #1 IN MY... HANDS. HAHA:clapping::dancin:

Michael Jackson has made pop chart history in America
from beyond the grave by becoming the only solo artist to score top 10 hits in five successive decades.

The King of Pop's Love Never Felt So Good duet with Justin Timberlake rockets into the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 at number nine, giving Jackson an unmatched feat.

The new hit is the late superstar's 29th top 10 - he scored his first in November, 1971, when Got to Be There landed at number nine on the countdown. In total, he has spent a record-breaking 42 weeks in the Hot 100 top 10.

His latest chart feat comes just days after Jackson appeared in hologram form for a show-stopping spectacle at the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas on Sunday May 18, 2014

If the reports about the 9000 units are true, they should have learned the lesson from the Jay-Z issue. For example, rather than give the album away with the purchase of a 20 dollar item, the could have given the buyer a coupon which they could use to download the album at a very discounted price, perhaps as little as 99 cents.

If this wouldn't work, then perhaps they could have given away the free items with the purchase of the CD instead of the other way around. If Gaga can discount her CD for 99 cents as she did for at least one day during one of recent album releases, they should have been able to get around this issue with better planning and execution

Honestly, both Sony and the Estate did a lot to promote this album but they should have done whatever it takes to ensure this album debuted at number 1 in the US. This includes more banner ads, discounts, etc., they could have even used some of those old tricks that Tommy Mottola used with Mariah in terms of store placements and radio airplay. Having a number 1 album in the US is huge from a marketing standpoint. It gives them the opportunity to put that label on all of the re-issue store copies. It is much better to label "from the Number 1 album, including the top 10 hit...." Instead of "from the number 1 album in 49 countries...". The US public doesn't really care if the album debuted number 1 in Belgium, for example. I also wonder if they could have picked a better week with less competition. There have been many weeks recently where the number 1 album sold significantly less than this. Oh we'll. An opportunity missed

Hey guys, I kind of understand that BB didn't approve those 9 thousand albums given away with MJ1.
MJ1 has nothing to do with Xscape other than its MJ singing.

Also, I wouldn't go on to say that it hurt on sales as its not certain that those 9 thousand were going to buy the album.

Secondly, lowering albums prices and other trickery regarding getting no 1 album is not very cool thing to do.
I rather have a good solid honestly earned no 2 album, than no 1 album that achieve top position only because some trickery along the road (Katy Perry comes to mind).

Great to see MJ is still breaking records:clapping:

If BB acknowledged and counted Madonna's bundle sales but not this then that is unfair though. It's the double standards that is the problem.

I think this 99 cent-deals are also didn`t count anymore to the charts.

I just dont get it in here :( It very depressing I have to go outside this forum to celebrate the success of Michael Xscape with fans who appreciate it. Every thread seems so negative and depressing WHY?

Come on guys Xscape if a GREAT Success worldwide - LETS CELEBRATE .. :)

Okay but WHY they didn't do that for Jay-Z than when his last album was "bundle" or free with Samsung?? It's my understanding that the Madonna album was free with tickets price right? So why they didn't count for MJ when Xscape was given out for free with the price of ONE.

Maybe BB accepted bundle sales because the tour and album were about the same, but MJ1 and Xscpae is not the same. I would think if they had bundled lets say Immortal album with Immortal show together, that would have been ok.

Just checked, Madonna's tour was The MDNA Tour and the album was the same, but that is not the same in Xcape and MJ1

Thank you! I've been avoiding here more and more. Loving the album! Some days in these threads you'd think someone had released 'Michael 2: the 'Monster' returns. Executive Producers: E.Cascio & Diane.D'.

I don't know, that sounds like a shaky reasoning because the princle behind the strategy is the same. A lot less people would have bought Madonna's album if not for the concert tickets.

Oh well, I doubt BB would change their charts now, but it has to be noted that MJ is sometimes always at the short end of such chart policy changes/manipulations. This was the same when his albums and singles weren't allowed to chart after his death, because they were catalogue. Later Billboard changed that policy and when Whitney died her catalogue material could chart.

People are confusing One with Immortal. The cd wasn't given away with One ticket sales, it was given as a free gift at the Immortal show on merchandise purchases of $20 or more. When this was announced I thought it was a horrible idea as I knew it would make those albums ineligible to chart, and they are giving something away for free when a majority of people would have bought it, maybe it was to drive the merchandise sales up. The album may be in 9k more hands than the Keys, but unfortunately the Key's sold more.
