In The Closet apprecation

I do not want to digress but I have to say this:

I never liked Madonna’s persistent intervention in MJ’s style/image during those months (before the release of his ‘Dangerous’ album). Also, I find her remarks about MJ’s image a bit derogatory towards him. I mean, it does not look seemly to say publicly such things about changing one’s whole image.

Besides, MJ had already fashion ideas submitted to him (by top designers, such as Jean Paul Gaultier, or the Tunisian Azzedine Alaïa) as a part of his upcoming projects (album, music clips, tour, etc.). So, Madonna’s intervention also made no sense to me.

It comes off as extremely forced and contrived.

What Madonna wanted from Michael was not his style so why would he want that? Madonna sounds a bit condescending here as if MJ was not a megastar too. LOL.

I love this song and being also a Madonna fan this duet would have been so epic. It also would have been a lot better than the slushy one she did with Ricky Martin in 1999, and the boring one she did with Justin Timberlake in 2008. I too think she was somewhat condescending toward MJ, because he rejected her ideas both professionally and personally. And that was pretty obvious during the interviews she did after Oscars date that for someone who is use to getting her way, she was hurt. Kind of like what she did to Drake last year over that "Kiss". Oh what could have been.

Judging by Madonna’s duets & their rather mundane appeal (with the lethargic ‘Love Song’ or the inexcusable ‘B-Day Song’ being some other characteristic examples, apart from the ones you mentioned), personally I am really glad that the song was never evolved into a duet between MJ & Madonna.

Moreover, we should keep in mind that Madonna is an artist who is heavily relied on her collaborators (co-producers/co-writers) when it comes to her songs. Her latest album ‘Rebel Heart’ (although it has some really impressive tracks) proves that for one more time. So, her own ideas about ‘In The Closet’ most likely did not meet MJ’s (higher) musical/lyrical standards.

I would say without hesitation that I am fully satisfied with the final result of ‘In The Closet’. I particularly liked its deep erotic feeling not only musically (crescendos, abrupt/crisp sounds, for example) but also vocally (with MJ emulating orgasm towards the end of the song being the most characteristic example).

that's my favorite part!!! mmm love it, so hot

I love pretty much everything about this song. From the beat, sounds used and vocals. The video is great too. I'm glad it didn't become a duet with Madonna.

I still think it would have been good with Madonna (I know I'm bias :chillin:) but your right that video is amazing and Naomi is a hot co-star. The best out of all of them

I adore Madonna also & it would have been interesting.

I think the story has been stretched throughout the years and I know in the early 90s Madonna was at the height of her 'let's push people's buttons' era which was a bit hard to take.

The video with Naomi brought out Mike at his sexiest though & is the only short film where I think he has any sexual chemistry with his co-star. The kiss in RTT is cringeful and although there is chemistry in TWYMMF, the platonic hug at the end pours cold water on any heat there may have been.

Oh to be a fly on that wall when they were attempting to work together.......I wish more tea was spilled about that period.

IMO, Madonna did a huge mistake forcing anything! Not just because Michael (as expected) didn’t agree with anything but mostly because it would be priceless to have a closer look at HIS ideas. She had this chance, she could be part of it but she basically wasn’t interested.

As an artist, IMO, it would be better for her to experiment with HER OWN image to get to Michael Jackson standards… It would be very useful for her, I think.

Don’t get me wrong but Naomi was just co-star in the video, she is a model not an artist, as for Princess Stephanie, what ideas she could share with MJ? I guess it is safe to say that she just gave her voice and that’s it. With Madonna there could be a real collaboration but it seems Madonna wasn’t interested in it.

Mmh, well, Madonna was already a superstar in her own rights at that time. The ONLY female superstar and also the ONLY female superstar along with Prine and Michael. As I am a woman myself, I know you often have to be double tough and stubborn to achieve something outstanding. :)

So, I`d rather think that Madonna met Michael as a peer, trying to push her own ideas concerning a collaboration. I see her as extremely self confident and I also can see her and Michael "clashing" because both were so demanding lol.

Well, I agree but I was talking not about being a superstar but about a creative process, about Michael being rather extraordinary artist who most likely could have unique ideas... She could be at least curious what he would suggest for her to change, creative wise.

To try to change Michael Jackson's whole image to me is a crime against the art, really. Lol.

Sorry, I actually meant both: superstardom AND Madonna and Michael each trying to push their very own creative ideas. :) Well, that´s one aspect why they both were superstars, their unique creative ideas.

Just a random thought, but I would have loved to be a fly on the wall when MJ was recording all of those sounds.

Brad Sundberg was asked about it on his FB:

Helena Berglind Hi, Brad. These are questions from myself as well as from two other fans who are dear friends of mine... Do you have any interesting stories from the recording of the song In The Closet? What was the set up and was Michael embarrassed ? -

A - It was pretty funny on songs like that (that one in particular) where he could sing some pretty "interesting" lyrics, groans, etc., and then just laugh it off. We didn't really evaluate lyrical content, he just sang the songs and we might tease him a bit, but not much - it was his show. And no.. he was not embarrassed...

OK but what does Brad say about Madonna and In the Closet.....did he meet her? etc

I think what Brad said about Madonna is a well known story. Madonna once visited MJ in the studio, they went to MJ's private room so no one else knew what they were talking about then she left. MJ's only comment to it afterwards was "she scared me".

Madonna is so boring lol sorry. In The Closet is one of my favourite songs ever and I'm so glad she wasn't it, it's so erotic and if she was in it I don't think it would be nearly as good. I also love the short film he's so sexy in it!! ;)

I think Teddy Riley once said that while he helped a bit, 95% of the song was written purely by MJ himself.

"Now, In the Closet was something Michael came up with, and it came out exactly as he wanted the track to be. He kind of put his vocals on a Dictaphone when he was in another room. He'd often record the vocals on a Dictaphone and take them into the studio and then see how it would all work out.
"This is some of Michael's more explicit material on there, in terms of lyrical content [laughs]! But it didn't surprise you at the time. No, not at all."

Maybe Madonna inspired the song with her art books and films that he checked out, when he visited her home :D:rofl: I've said it before.....but oh to be a fly on that wall :candy: How many times did he go to her house?

I am pretty sure he did not need Madonna and her book to be inspired for this song. I don't think Madonna was his type anyway.

Madonna's demeanour towards MJ is very telling in these 2 interviews she did when they were gonna do the duet, and months later when it was called off.

an interesting song...

but i always felt that considering his appeal to children it was a but overly sexualised (with the videos and sexual innuendos)? I dont mind it, but for a 10 year old mj fan it can be a little inappropriate.

Good song though....

This does not make sense at all!

“… She [Madonna] was into these books, a whole library of books of women who were tied to walls. She said ‘I love spanky books’. Why do I want to see that?...” (MJ, The Michael Jackson Tapes).

As a matter of fact, MJ did not draw (artistic) inspiration from her generally, not just when it came to ‘In The Closet’.

Madonna obviously does not tell the whole story here & her demeanor towards MJ seemed to be (in general) completely different, for example:

“... [Madonna said] ‘I am not going to Disneyland, okay? That’s out’. I said ‘But I didn’t ask you to go to Disneyland’. She said we are going to the restaurant and afterwards we are going to a strip bar. I said ‘I’m not going to a strip bar’. Guys who cross-dress!’… We were at the table eating and some little kids came up. ‘Oh my God Michael Jackson and Madonna. Can we have your autographs? She said ‘Get out of here. Leave us alone’. I said ’Don’t ever talk to children like that again’. She said ‘Shut up’... Afterwards she wrote some mean things about me in the press and I wrote that she is a nasty witch, after I was so kind to her… I was not in love with her…I knew we had nothing in common…” (MJ, The Michael Jackson Tapes)

So, I think those MJ's quotes put an end to various baseless claims that persist up to these days (such as, MJ was attracted by her, MJ sought artistic inspiration from her, etc).
