Was the Estate announcement wrong? They said it would be shown at 22.15 on 4th September.
That might be right. Many articles say August 30th but that is the date when the festival opened. I was under immpression it was that. Sorry I was wrong.

Michael Jackson's THRILLER 3D was a highlight of the evening. Crystal clear image with timeless music & amazing choreography-WOW! #Venezia74

Aaah..it looks as though last night was a 'press preview'. Maybe the 'formal' screening is still tonight after all. Fans were invited to dress up as zombies when they attend, and I don't think they'd do that for a 'press preview'.

04 SEPTEMBER 2017 The Venice Film Festival comes out of the contest as a real gift for fans of new movie technologies and for Michael Jackson fans: John Landis 'Michael Jackson's Thriller 3D', Applauded last night in the press preview. The director of 'The Blues Brothers' and the 1983 original video clip used the original 35mm film negative to proceed to a 3D conversion of the famous video with zombies and one of the most iconic dance scenes in video story history with the help of the latest technologies available. The result is breathtaking and is intended to send ***** fans to the show. - See more at: http://www.rainews.it/dl/rainews/me...dis-984b1948-ab57-4601-a60b-8bff31e4c86c.html

Last night in Sala Perla, inside the Casinos Palace, we had the privilege of attending one of the special events out of the competition that this 74th edition of the Venice Film Festival has made available to print and public, a version of the immortal music video by Micheal Jackson, Thriller, for the remastered occasion in a 3D format.

Needless to say how much joy and enthusiasm has triggered these 14 minutes that have made the history of music video clips and have reconfirmed John Landis's enormous talent behind the camera, though they did not need it at this time.

It was shown last night. And today.

Landis and Branca did a press conference today as well.

There is no new ending. I guess they decided against it in the end. Landis made reference, I believe, to taking it to theatres. A lot of the reaction has been very negative over in Venice.

Yesterday there was the press preview, not the official date for public!!!!

By reactions, it was spectacular!

Which one of the two is it? Spectacular or negative reactions??

Elpais.com reported that 'viewers left disappointed'. Some of the comments on twitter last night were very negative. I hope they are the minority.

Maybe they are the negative about the 3D itself rather than the restoration.

Did they say why they were disappointed? Because they expected a new surprise ending or because the 3D effects were not great, or they didn't show The Making of Thriller, etc.

Effects was reportedly as usual as 3D, nothing special, but no surprise.....

I'm glad that they didn't change anything :D I always thought the new ending thing was a bad idea, but that's because I think that Thriller is a masterpiece as it is.

By the way, Thriller in HD and 3D is nothing special to you?

I'm happy if they didn't change anything. Thriller doesn't need any changes. Can't wait to see it in HD at some point.

I don't think they've had the red carpet yet. it's supposed to be after 10.00 tonight. Yesterday was a press preview.

I dont know what date and time schedule is relevant now, so am a bit confused, but Sep. 9 at 19,30 was the time of what?

Who knows what to think. Everyone has seen Thriller a million times. A HD version is great but 3D I will never really understood why they would even bother with this. No one should be surprised by any of this. Maybe a Blueray in time for Halloween.

Venice: Michael Jackson Estate, John Landis, Unveil ‘Thriller’ Short in 3-D in Leadup to Other New Projects

VENICE, Italy — The hotly anticipated 3D version of the 1983 game-changing “Thriller”
short directed by John Landis world-premiered Monday at the Venice Film Festival where
Landis and Michael Jackson estate co-executor John Branca said it is a preamble to bigger
announcements regarding Jackson legacy projects to be unveiled soon.

“Now we have ‘Thriller’ 3-D and two more announcements are coming up in the next couple of
weeks,” Branca said in an interview, declining to elaborate further.

“Michael had and expression: ‘the quality goes in before the name goes on,’ so we are not ready
to announce them yet,” he noted.

Asked if there may be an album of unreleased recordings from the vaults coming Branca said:
“I don’t forsee us releasing any more unreleased music for quite some time.” But he added:
“That doesn’t mean there won’t be interesting [new] record releases in the very near future.”

The Venice world premiere of “Thriller” in 3-D is being accompanied by a restored version of Jerry
Kramer-directed “Making of Michael Jackson’s Thriller” documentary, shown in a theatre for the first time.
Currently plans for the reissue of this powerful piece, which includes
Jackson family home movies
, are also being kept under wraps.

The original Making of Thriller had no family home movies.

Bluray, with a decent promotion, around Halloween would be awesome.

^Two more announcements?! Holy... I hope we finally get a Victory Tour release

Venice: Michael Jackson Estate, John Landis, Unveil ‘Thriller’ Short in 3-D in Leadup to Other New Projects

VENICE, Italy — The hotly anticipated 3D version of the 1983 game-changing “Thriller” short directed by John Landis world-premiered Monday at the Venice Film Festival where Landis and Michael Jackson estate co-executor John Branca said it is a preamble to bigger announcements regarding Jackson legacy projects to be unveiled soon.

Asked if there may be an album of unreleased recordings from the vaults coming Branca said: “I don’t forsee us releasing any more unreleased music for quite some time.” But he added: “That doesn’t mean there won’t be interesting [new] record releases in the very near future.”

Landis recalled that one of the most surreal things about making “Thriller” were Jackson’s friends.

“He introduced me to Spanky Mc Farland [of “The Little Rascals”] and to Marlon Brando,” Landis said.

He went on to recall the most surprising encounter he made on the ‘Thriller’ shoot:

“We were shooting the cemetery scene in a meat packing plant in a bad part of L.A….Mike asked to see me so I stepped up to his Winnebago, I knocked, and he said: ‘John: do you know Mrs. Onassis?” I was, like: what? It was just the last person I expected!,” he noted.

About the 3-D conversion Landis said at first he thought it would just be a gimmick and was keen about the project primarily because it would allow the negative to be restored. But in the process of doing the conversion he realised that 3-D “really enhances it, especially the dance [aspect].” The short has not been re-edited or re-cut, but the sound has been enhanced.

How and when the 3-D “Thriller” short will be released is still being kept under wraps, however Landis assured that it would be a “cinematic experience.”

The original 14-minute short redefined the traditional music video when it opened at the Avco Theatre in Los Angeles in 1983 for a sold-out three-week run.

The Venice world premiere of “Thriller” in 3-D is being accompanied by a restored version of Jerry Kramer-directed “Making of Michael Jackson’s Thriller” documentary, shown in a theatre for the first time.

Currently plans for the reissue of this powerful piece, which includes Jackson family home movies, are also being kept under wraps.

The original Making of Thriller had no family home movies.

Don't they have shots of Michael and Marlon dancing at a party they performed for before the Motown Days?
Or was that in 'The Magic Returns'? I could have sworn in was in 'The Making of Thriller.'

(My VCR is broken right now-so can't check).

Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ screens in 3-D at Venice

VENICE, Italy (AP) — Director John Landis said Monday that he is still upset by Michael Jackson’s death, but a Venice Film Festival screening dedicated to “Thriller” is a chance to celebrate the musician’s life.

An enhanced version of the landmark Landis-directed music video, “Michael Jackson’s Thriller 3-D,” is screening alongside a behind-the-scenes documentary that has never been shown in cinemas before.

Landis told reporters in Venice on Monday that Jackson’s death aged 50 in 2009 was a tragedy for his family, his friends and the world.

“Truly great performers are rare, and he was brilliant — and a tragic figure, I think,” Landis said. “I was horrified, and I’m still upset about it.

The 14-minute “Thriller” video, released in 1983, stemmed from Jackson’s love of Landis’ film “An American Werewolf in London” and the King of Pop’s desire to turn into a monster onscreen.

Landis says modern technology has let him remix the sound and improve the visuals while converting the film to 3-D, so audiences can now “experience it the way Michael wanted you to.”

“My only disappointment is that Michael is not here to see it and hear it, because I think he would love it,” Landis said.

Landis says the accompanying backstage documentary shows Jackson “happy and joyous” and at his creative peak.

“It’s a celebration of Michael I didn’t expect, and very emotional for me,” he said.
