Sony may unearth new songs individually over the next months and years

Can we just end this endless debate every time something is announced?? It‘s really really annoying! It was not the threads question how you wish the estate to do everything...
It‘s always the same over and over and over again...

If they continue to remix (butcher) the original versions, I prefer if they nothing gets released.

Why do you say that? Didn't they release the original versions on Xscape too? If you don't like the remixed versions, you can choose to not listen to them.

I don't mind trying to 'finish' the songs... Finishing it and making it into a different song basically are two different things.. songs like 'loving you' stayed pretty true to the original sound, made it 'hit' a little harder in parts.. brought it to life a bit more. that's it! but songs like DYKWYCA totally changed the sound (instramentally).. while I really believe Mike would have dug that instramental... Not for that song, the song is too serious to have a fun (video game) sounding instramental. it confuses the theme.

Ah, OK. My bad. Then hopefully we will hear a new song soon. :)

I agree. - Xscape, Much too Soon, Blue Gangsta, LNFSG, Loving You etc. are great songs updated with respect for the original. I can accept that - especially when the original demo is also released like it was on Xscape.

Except if they don't release the demo in the latest form that it was worked on. As on Xscape, with the title track or Blue Gangsta and A Place With No Name(?). It also bothers me that they released the Bad 25 demos in the form that they were worked on during the Bad era and also not the latest version. If they ever plan to release all those songs like Don't Be Messin or Al Capone in the final state that's even better, as we then will have multiple versions of the songs and can see them evolving over time, but my fear is that the Estate will never do so...

I hope they do so very much!!

It isn't clear. He could be saying the extended version includes more songs and unreleased MJ. I'd probably side more that they are two different topics, but it isn't explicitly clear the way he's written it.

It's most likely to be two different things, especially after that LA times article specifically mentioning that John Mclain and a high profile producer (Potentially Mark Ronson) working on unreleased tracks.

That's really the best case scenario if we can't get the originals. I doubt they'll do that though. They'll make them all sound modern and forgettable.

I have faith. McClain has arguably been the most consistent and respectful producer thus far. There's obviously some debate and personal preference (e.g., the Bucharest samples in "Behind the Mask"), but he works to update/polish the songs while remaining true to the original spirit of the demo, which is the best thing you can do other than releasing them as-is. He's not nearly as shamed as Timbaland or Teddy Riley or Stargate; I think I've only ever come across one person who outright hates his works. That says a lot to me.

Of course anything could change, but I think if you're gonna have anyone step into the producer's chair to flesh out a song (and by "anyone" I mean any realistic choice), McClain is one of the best bets.

It seems rather clear to me. It wouldn't make any sense for him to incorporate unreleased songs into a megamix. Unless he meant "unreleased MJ vocals," which still makes no sense because why would he phrase it the way he did if it was just alternate/extended vocal takes?

Seems pretty straightforward. As AmitLal92 said, it also falls in line with the Sony VP mentioning that John McClain and a "high profile producer" were in the studio working on songs.

This is excellent news.

I collect MJ's music through iTunes, all the B-Sides and etc, and play them on my iPhone or digital MP3 player. I purchased Drake's song with MJ, but haven't heard the rest of it. I put it in the collection, though.

I will be willing to purchase individual new songs here and there, and make up my own collections. As an artist myself, that's more entertaining than buying some packaged album that has been redone to sell as a "Michael Jackson studio album."

You're drawing a conclusion from multiple sources. One I don't disagree with. Nonetheless, once more, it is not explicity clear the way he's written it.

I agree. I hate DYKWYCA with a passion, but I don't like the demo either, I have to say.

It made me sick Rodney Jerkins telling Timbaland 'MJ would've loved this'. The whole project just reeked of this inauthentic aura. They way they spoke about Michael was ridiculous. Rodney Jerkins was the only one who had any right to speak the way they did in those videos and even he said some wild things.

Looking back, I'm really not a fan of Xscape. The 'contemporized' versions sound dated already and the demo's were nothing special either as we'd already had them [some for over a decade!!].

I don't hate the song DYKWYCA but the remix was very bad imo.

I also think Xscape sounds dated. I believe that reason is because Timberland was outdated at that time. Should have used someone else. McClain should have been the choice to oversee all the tracks. Whom ever updates new songs please use real instruments.

They shot for real short term with that project. Timbaland was a terrible idea from the scratch due to his negative MJ comments in the past.

I'm interested to see if Mark Ronson has a shot at new MJ. He worked with Bruno on Uptown Funk and that has a great sound. Xscape was too 2014 RnB/Hip-Hop and as a huge fan of the genre it's easy to admit that very few albums in that genre age well.

I think Timbaland did a solid job when one considers the "remix from scratch" school of thought. His cut of "Chicago" is absolutely phenomenal imo, and I only really dislike one of his tracks ("Blue Gangsta," and even then I still love the first minute or so).

John McClain, though, is about as close as we're gonna get to Quincy Jones. And Mark Ronson is immensely talented (if we forget about "Diamonds Are Invincible"). I haven't been this excited about an MJ project in years.

Agreed. The work Mark has done with Bruno Mars, Amy Winehouse etc has been great and his own albums have been pretty solid too. Hopefully he does just as good a job with MJ.

I think the Michael album sounds more modern than the Xscape album, even though it came out 4 years early. I very rarely listen to any songs from Xscape, while I listen to songs like Best of Joy, Much Too Soon, Hold My Hand on a pretty frequent basis. I think the Michael album had a lot more potential than the Xscape album. Just a shame that those 3 fake songs ruined the album.

Idk what you guys mean because I still love a bunch of Xsxape tracks! LNFSG (solo version, Chicago, Loving You (one of my fav MJ tracks from this century), Xscape are tracks I listen to pretty regularly and I’m not talking about the original MJ versions..

And I’ve always liked Timbaland’s STTR version a lot but Tricky Stewart’s mix is my favorite of that song, although if Timbaland uses the entire vocal track like Tricky did then Tim’s would be my favorite...I’ve always wondered why didn’t use the full vocal track since they used it for the hologram performance..

I’ve said many times that ‘Michael’ sounds more like a Michael Jackson album, which is surprising given it’s not even him on it!

I agree that 'Michael' sounds more like a Michael Jackson album than Xscape. The only songs on Xscape that I think MJ would be happy with are Loving You, Xscape & maybe (a big maybe) STTR & LNFSG. He would be fuming listening to the modern versions of the other songs. On the other hand, I think he will enjoy the Michael album, minus the 3 Cascio songs of course.

They sound closer to what MJ’s “sound”. I don’t think he’d necessarily be happy with it, but it’s unfortunately something we’ll ever know. Lesser of two evils from a sound perspective is definitely Michael.

Of course no one can truly capture MJ's sound, but Michael does do a far better job of, at least trying to sound like a Michael Jackson album. It's a shame that despite the Cascio songs, I remember Michael album more fondly. It's not that Xscape was a bad album. It just wasn't a Michael Jackson album, while Michael was.

I agree. It's worth noting that the songs were not completely demos and were almost finished or already finished products:Hold My Hand and Best of Joy were almost 100% complete, Behind the Mask, Much Too Soon and Another Day were finished outtakes from albums, The Way You Love Me was released in 2004 and Hollywood Tonight was in progress. Also, Michael co-produced these tracks, and so, there's less tweaking on the songs compared to Xscape. Somehow, the controversy of the Cascio tracks overshadowed the fact that this is the closest we get to have a legit Michael Jackson album.

Michael was produced with the explicit intent of finishing what Michael started and using his demos as a guide. Play the Teddy Riley instrumental of "Hollywood Tonight" back to back with the demo instrumental; they aren't exactly alike but you can tell it's the same song. Same with "Behind the Mask" or "Hold My Hand" or "Another Day."

Xscape was, for all intents and purposes, a remix album. Only "Blue Gangsta" shares any similarities with the original demo; everything else sounds like Timbaland/Stargate/Rodney Jerkins featuring Michael Jackson. Xscape has some great songs (the remixes of "Chicago" and "A Place With No Name," both versions of "Loving You"), but they very clearly had no intent of creating anything following Michael's wishes.

So what is it we really understand/know about upcoming projects.. "unearth" new material and hearing something about new artists working on stuff.. are these projects the same project? Are there 2 things going on?

I agree. Such a shame Xscape didn't follow Michael recipe. - If they had finished the songs as MJ wanted them to be - and we also got the demos - that would have been a perfect album.

I like both albums very much actually. - Such great music - Michael has 7 great songs - 5 even amazing songs. - Much Too Soon, Best of Joy, Hollywood Tonight, Behind the Mask and Hold My Hand. - Finished in a way I think MJ could/would have done himself. - Maybe without the live noise on Behind the mask, but still great.

Xscape has both temporized version and demo - I hope all future songs will be released that way with both new version and the original how MJ left it.
Xscape has som many great songs - mostly I listen to the demos, but the temporized versions are fine too.
