Quincy Jones sues Michael Jackson’s estate over royalties

The judge from a few years ago allows the jury to conclude the case and didn’t even bother looking into actual evidence about the contract which is improper. That was a lousy move on his part which is why the Estate appealed. Now the decision’s reversed and Quincy lost the $$$.

As a result, the superstar producer's $9.4 million win three years ago has been reversed.

Ouch. I feel a bit sorry for Quincy TBH, to lost this amount when he had reason to think it was already his is a bit harsh, but oh well.

I wish, Quincy wouldn’t smear his own legacy with stuff like that. I really liked the man. You can tell how much he always loved what he did, and his work is phenomenal.

I agree. I choose not to let his recent behaviour overshadow decades of amazing achievements (working with MJ is only a small part of it actually, even if it brought his most mainstream success). His music remains great, let's try to focus on that.

Oh, I don’t feel very sorry for him. That’s what he gets for teaming up with Wade Robson’s first lawyer, I guess.

Yep, never been a fan of cancel culture. I’ll keep enjoying Q’s work, and the person that he used to be in the old days. :)

:scream: OK, I didn't follow this case (obviously ), I thought this was just a business feud where both sides may have their own valid reasons, go to court and let it decide, but this... yuck.

And he filed his suit in 2013... :fear: *goes to read some more details*

A few months after WR, and with his lawyer. So, yeah … hardly a coincidence.

2.5 M is a long way from wanting 30 million. Get what you owe but not more. still was greedy Q

OK I've read the topic (I was aware of this lawsuit but avoided the details thinking it was "only" a financial dispute). I've found some great stuff BTW, thanks to everyone who contributed and shared articles and information!

Jones grew agitated when Weitzman played several early demos of Jackson’s songs, including “Workin’ Day and Night,” “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,” “Billie Jean,” and an a cappella version of “Beat It” that Jackson had recorded at his Hayvenhurst family home. The attorney then played the final album versions of the songs.

“What’s your point, Howard,” Jones said at one point. At another, he snapped: “What are you trying to prove?”

LOL, this was priceless. I always had this feeling that Quincy wasn't particularly happy about those demos becoming public. :D TBH I was surprised too when I first heard them because I honestly believed Quincy had much more influence on the final results and did many significant alterations. Turns out he didn't...

It seems that Quincy is at the same place now where he had been before he started the legal process, as the appellate court decided on a similar amount that the Estate was willing to pay him already before any legal pressure. I still feel a little bit of sorry for him, haha, but he behaved in a quite dishonorable manner and he brought this on himself. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

John [Branca] testified that he told Howard to go offer him $2 or $3 million, five times what the record company found that he was owed by these mistakes and that was not good enough.

The court left in place the remaining $2.6 million awarded to Jones, which consisted of unpaid license fees from “This Is It,” plus other fees and interest.

This is why I dislike MJ's connection with Quincy. Quincy gets the credits for OTW and Thriller but the fact is the fact, the most brilliant songs on it come from MJ's mind. Quincy wants all the credit, he is phony. After Thriller nobody looked at MJ the same as before. the jealousy took over. Friends became enemies.

Wow, thanks for this information, I didn’t know this (or forgot). So the whole ordeal was completely in vain, from his point of view? That’s almost tragic.

He still gonna get money. i'm not sure what the problem is. Q owns half of Michael music. so that's half and half for both. he just want it more money that's all. Michael was too much for this world. that's why he lost "friends" and got haters and jealously.

I remember reading that at the time and I found it very telling too. There was something else when he was on the stand too that I remember commenting on that was similarly telling, but I forget now.

I just noticed the similar amount reading through the archive, I guess Branca evaluated it correctly after all. This also proves in a way that the Estate accepted their mistake and intended to make up for it and to treat Quincy in a fair manner. It's a pity things had to turn out like this.

Sort of off topic, but there was also an interesting speculation about Robson and Gradstein (the post is from 2013, I don't know if anything proved or disproved it ever since, I guess it just get forgotten among other things):

The strange thing is not that he represents Quincy. Gradstein's speciality is royalties/business issues. The strange thing is rather that he represents Wade because his specialities do not include child abuse allegations. Even at the beginning of WR's case many fans remarked that it's odd. Now I wonder if it started with first weighing Wade's possibilities to sue the Estate on some business term (for example in connection with the Cirque stuff, Opus, Wade's earlier contract with MJJ Productions etc.) I wonder if they found no real opportunity there and that's how it all turned into child abuse allegations. Because the choice of lawyer for that case is certainly very odd.

Hmm, interesting. Do we know when and why Wade changed his lawyer?

Great news especially for the Estate, it sends a clear message to anyone seeking easy money that the legal team doesn't fool around.
Shame about Quincy, not surprising looking how he acted during MJ's most trying times, but still upsetting. Great talent, poor character.

He owns nothing. MJ is 100% owner of his music.

Last I read Quincy was accusing Michael of stealing one of Donna Summers songs and turning it into Bilie Jean .

Billie Jean is actually from another song. it a sample. i'm not sure if this true and I can't think of the song right now.

The bass line was lifted from the Hall & Oates song "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)" from their album PRIVATE EYES (1981). The songwriters found that pretty cool.

Yeah I know that (thanks for the specific info BTW!), my point is Quincy acts like he wasn't involved in the producing of the song. He was, so it makes him a complicit in the "stealing". :D

At this point it's just sad, obviously he has some unresolved issues. It seems he's desperate to get some kind of credit, even undeserved, and when he doesn't get it, he resolves to slander. Doesn't have to make sense, what's important is that it sticks.
What's worrying is that I see more and more people willing to do the same mental gymnastics as Quincy. Anything to take down a man they hate. Thank God the demos are easily accesible, so anyone with an open mind can make the call on it themselves.

I don't understand what he crying about. he have enough to last until he leaves this planet. I understand his life wasn't too great. but *shrugs*.

Quincy also sad michael steal songs al l the time. Then he has tried to take back what he said.

Quincy’s a stupid old fool, he knows he didn’t write those songs, it was clearly Michael’s and he damn well knows it.

Really? then what the point of him being there since off the wall? i feel now the history of Michael music is now a joke or has been rewrite.

What do you mean “a joke” or had been “rewrite”? Let’s not forget that Quincy was producer and Michael was CO-PRODUCER.

I’m surprised no one has brought up the obvious fact that Quincy has acted like a jealous girl ever since Michael started distancing himself from him as a producer. It’s just not natural how Quincy started acting toward Michael when Michael turned to Teddy Riley for Dangerous. Bottomline is Quincy wanted to control Michael and there was no way in hell that MJ was going to allow that, thus Quincy becoming vindictive and lying in order to smear Michael. Btw, I don’t care how talented Quincy is, that should not be a reason to try and smear a person after they are no longer here to defend themselves. I have ZERO respect for Quincy Jones, despite his talent. He #$&@% that up when he went out of his way to disparage Michael. Let’s not forget that there are things that Michael could have thrown Quincy under the bus for, yet he didn’t.
