The 'Those EYES' Thread

This quote from Harrison Funk is probably quite similar to the David Nordahl quote I posted but it's so lovely I couldn't resist:

“Michael had the most beautiful eyes I’ve ever photographed. They were large. They were expressive. They were deep. I don't mean that physically. It was a picture into his soul. I think Michael, he knew in every picture what he wanted to convey. Even when he was completely natural he could convey a message to the camera." -Harrison Funk

Michael blinks. I melt.

I love this quote! It says so much coming from a photographer too. I feel like what he’s describing here in some sense is Michael’s way of conveying vulnerability. It’s something I marvel at in Michael all the time. I feel like Michael was probably the kind of person who could turn a switch on and off when it came to letting people peer into his soul like this. I can’t imagine his eyes ever looking empty, but I bet he was capable of conveying that. Though, idk because he wore sunglasses a lot for that that self protection and privacy, so maybe he wasn’t? He’s such an enigma lol

Where did you post the David Nordahl quote? I want to read it!

Here you go:

"He never did really understand that he had that inner light.
Sitting and talking to Michael I would look into his eyes and I could see for 1,000 miles. He had these most incredible eyes. They come off good on film, but nothing like in person. When you’re actually sitting across there looking at him. Those eyes were unbelievable. There were times it would just stop me in my tracks and there were times I’d be around him where I’d kind of forget who he was and then it would dawn on me….’I’m sitting here next to Michael Jackson.’ I never really got over that."

This is something I think about all the time. Did Michael really not understand or see how special he was? He comes across as so incredibly authentic and yet, at the same time, he is the ultimate performer, which can feel like a contradiction.

I wish I could understand Michael. I spend too much time psycho analyzing everyone in the world and Michael really doesn’t deserve to have people continue doing it to him, but it’s impossible not to. I so badly want to know him.

I love this whole part so much. I’ve heard so many people describe his eyes in a similar way. His eyes seem to really take people aback. His eyes are almost painfully pure. I mean, they are more than that. They are a million different things at once.

I love this and you know how I always talk about fainting in his presence lol. But I really want to believe I wouldn’t be overwhelmed by him, but would just treat him like a person. It really does make me sad for him that so many people, often by holding him in high regard, really couldn’t get past his identity.

I swear sometimes I just want to cradle him.

I 100% agree with all of this dear. ❤️

Oh this one is wonderful. It's like he is saying hi and inviting you for a hug. I cried buckets after seeing this one the first time 😭
I agree. This was a new one for me. I could hardly believe what I was seeing. So simple and yet there's so much in it.

It makes me tearful, joyful, calm and meditative, full of awe, mesmerised, wanting to be protective, wanting to laugh ... everything. And the little blink of his eyes. ❤️

Does anyone else feel like he almost looks like a painting here? His expression is so…it’s almost alarming because I feel so much from it but I’m not actually sure what he’s conveying! His eyes are not just beautiful they are so expressive and powerful. I have no idea how he does this. It’s like he’s looking through me.

Yes and yes and yes. This one more than any other puts me in mind of the David Nordahl quote about how Michael could use his eyes to convey stuff. Although I'm not sure I know what he's conveying here. But that could be down to - the photo has reduced my thinking power to zero. He's saying something, I'm just in no fit state to receive the message.

Painting? Yes. Alarming? Yes. Looking through me? Yes, again.

I am so drawn to this one. Even with the pb on it I used to go back and back. Could not keep away. Usually if a photo is all pb'd up I just move on. Couldn't do it with this one.

This is so true to how I experience this photo too. I feel like with Michael I am in a constant state of wanting to understand everything he puts out there. I want to get to the bottom of it; I want to feel like I can interpret him exactly as he intended, so that I feel closer to him. Or maybe because I just think whatever he was doing had to carry some meaning (whether it did or not, in reality). When I see a photo like this that penetrates me, but I can't actually put my finger on why, I both enjoy the uncertainty and feel troubled by it. Troubled maybe isn't the right word. It doesn't make me upset. It just makes me long for him -- not in a "manhood" way, but in a human way.

Idk that I'm making any sense lol.

I don't know anything about these men as people, but I have to say I just love how often other men described Michael this way. So many men have. The other day I read a quote where Stephen King described him as insanely beautiful or something lol. I think I shared this on a thread somewhere before too, but I watched a video of some rapper (his name escapes me) saying how when he met Michael he was so lost in his eyes and described them like a baby deer (which is a description I know we have discussed at some point). That's just not something you hear most men say about other men, especially back then. What is it about Michael? Why do you think other men were expressing these kinds of thoughts about him so regularly? Do you think his impact is just too undeniable? That feels like an easy answer, but idk.

PS: I will add that I constantly see comments on YT especially of men declaring they are straight but that Michael is the most beautiful man they've ever seen, and similar comments. I love these kinds of comments. Idk why but I just love when men gush about him lol.

You did share this before and I love it just as much second time around. I don't understand how Michael can have this type of power over men AND women but he clearly does. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean that men can't have emotional feelings about other men or that they can't appreciate another man's beauty or whatever. Of course they can and do. But, generally, they wouldn't usually be so free to express it in these sort of terms, I don't think. It's fabulous but unusual.

Not sure if you've had time to catch up with the 'Eyes' thread. Bumping this one because of the lovely photo - Hiker removed the pb watermark. Hiker is a miracle worker, as far as I'm concerned.

Also, the two quotes here are so lovely. You might have seen them already but I like to revisit them every now and again.
