There are a lot of songs which are underappreciated, these are the ones which I think are underrated:
.goin' places
.ain't nothing like the real thing
.forever came today
.get it together

This is my opinion so please comment on the ones you think are underrated

to name a few

- Forever came today
- You've got a friend
- Touch
- Who's looking for a lover
- That's what you get for being polite
- Be not always

- You've changed (DIANA ROSS PRESENTS THE J5 - this is one of their oldest recorded songs. There's lots of vocal energy here by Mike and a very catchy chorus, It would have been a sure fire nr 1 hit imo)

- Don't know why I love you (from ABC - lovely builds in intensity Michael kills it, cover of Stevie Wonder - performed live in their first tour)

- True love can be beautiful (ABC - love the chorus and brothers' background vocals carrying it)

- La la means I love you (ABC - Delfonics cover, again MJ killing it, his chorus gets more passionate as the song moves forward, brilliant singing)

- Maybe tomorrow (MAYBE TOMORROW - also in the setlist but I haven't heard it yet, absolutely gorgeous ballad, great backing vocals by the brothers)

- Looking through the windows (LOOKING THROUGH THE WINDOWS - live staple during 1973, nice mid tempo head bopper that turns up the pace on the chorus, very catchy)

- It's too late to change the time (GET IT TOGETHER - early vocal mannerisms of adult MJ noticeable - also a live track)

- You need love like I do don't you (GET IT TOGETHER - love how it flows directly into dancing machine on the album, live they gave it a really funky rendition)

- All I do is think of you (MOVING VIOLATION - very tight r&b track became a cult classic in some circles and rightly so - also performed live)

- We've got a good thing going (BEN - great soulful singing, lovely arrangement instrumentally)

- Ain't no sunshine (GOT TO BE THERE - Bill Withers cover - live this is absolutely epic believe it)

- Girl don't take your love from me (GOT TO BE THERE - nice pop song with some long notes by Mikey, superb chorus)

- Maria you were the only one (GOT TO BE THERE - starts minimalistic and slow but builds up till it becomes a rousing desperate ode longing for passion and love - I fucking hope this was done live at some point)

- You've got a friend (GOT TO BE THERE - the Carole King track - just a freaking awesome song whoever sings it lol - also done live)

- With a child's heart (MUSIC AND ME - another Stevie Wonder track - feels lyrically poignant, very emotional for me - also a live track yet unheard)

- Happy (MUSIC AND ME - Smokey Robinson track and what a great track it is - live track and a mid 70s live staple)

- We're almost there (FOREVER MICHAEL - incredibly uplifting and inspiring track with a superb floaty dreamy arrangement)

- One day in your life (FOREVER MICHAEL - One of his finest ballads, love the choir, killed it live as well, a huge hit in Western Europe 6 years after its initial release, very emotional song for me personally)

- We've got forever (FOREVER MICHAEL - love the adlibs here with the female backing vocals)

- Dapper Dan (FOREVER MICHAEL - funky track - great interplay with the female backing vocalists, if MJ had done this live as an adult the ladies would have dropped by the masses because of the lyrics)

- We're here to entertain you (some outtake? - great verses and melody, autobiographical lyrics and we hear glimpses of MJ's adult voice during the ad libs when the brothers take over in harmony, dreamy track)

- To make my father proud (another outtake - another sort of autobiographical song, very emotional, adore the chuldren’s choir that pops up for a brief moment, adds something majestic to those wonderful lyrics

These pop up in my head but give the Motown albums a try they're very well produced (obviously it is Motown) if you're a bit scared of the bubblegum pop sound early on, they go a different route 1973 onwards with an edgier funky sound).
I want to stress out that young Michael wasn't all that different to adult Michael. It has always been about passionate vocals and it is there in abundance during the Motown era

Overall best studio albums: Got to be there, forever Michael, abc, get it together, moving violation.

I ignored all the early Jacksons tracks as I consider this adult MJ but I ignored it mostly because my post would be a lot longer if I included them...

There is so much good stuff here! I am still exploring J5 and The Jacksons and Michael's solo Motown work. I'm currently obsessed with his Got to be There album.

I am curious if anyone could recommend the most "Michael-centric" songs by the Jacksons. Meaning, songs Michael wrote, or co-wrote AND/or Michael is the solo or primary singer. That may be a huge list, I don't know. So much of it is still fairly new to me!

Thanks :)

"Blues Away" is MJs first solely written & released song. Other than start with Destiny & Triumph albums.

Thank you!! I’m reading about the albums now. I had no idea he wrote so much with the Jackson’s. This is so exciting! 😊

Blues away was also performed on the Jacksons variety show though I can’t remember if it was the studio version or a truly live version.
Earliest writing credits so far are for “Blues away”, “style of life”, “different kind of lady“ and “do what you wanna”. How much input came from MJ himself is not known (except blues away that is solo)

That’s the problem with co-written stuff. Not that it matters, really. But I’m most curious about things that came primarily from Michael!

What about vocals? What are some of the best vocals from Michael on Jackson’s albums? I don’t have a problem with the brothers’ voices, but I strongly prefer Michael’s. They just send me places.

Vocals? Can't beat 'True Love Can Be Beautiful'. It's J5 not Jacksons but it's beyond.

On all of The Jacksons albums, there's only 2 songs that Mike wrote by himself which are Blues Away (The Jacksons) & Heartbreak Hotel (Triumph). On the first 2 albums at CBS Records (The Jacksons, Goin' Places), the majority of the songs are written by Gamble & Huff and their other staff writers. On those, there are 4 songs written by the brothers (Blues Away, Style Of Life, Different Kind Of Lady, Do What You Wanna). Mike is involved with writing all 4. On Destiny, Triumph, & Victory the only non-Jackson brother written song is Blame It On The Boogie, which was originally released by a British singer named Mick Jackson, who is not related.

On Destiny & Triumph, Mike has writing credits on all songs except Your Ways, Time Waits For No One, Wondering Who, & Blame It On The Boogie. On Victory, Mike co-writes State Of Shock, Be Not Always, & The Hurt. But The Hurt is sung by Randy. The only involvement Mike has on the 2300 Jackson Street album is singing on the title track. All of the siblings sing on it (and some of their children) except LaToya, but Marlon does not appear in the music video. That is written by Tito, Randy, Jermaine, & Jackie with Teddy Riley.

Not counting Victory, Mike has the majority of the lead vocals, no matter who wrote the song. A few have a co-lead by the other brothers, mostly a line or 2. The only song sung entirely by someone else is Jackie on Wondering Who, and even on that Mike does ad-libs at the end. There is an alternate version of Wondering Who, that is not officially released, where Mike has some other lines. It's on Youtube. There is also a different mix of Different Kind Of Lady which is on the picture disc version of Goin' Places.

Only just catching up with this one. Goodness me, those lyrics! Brilliant but also very 🙁

Great song, though.
The album, Destiny is probably Michael's most personal album after History. Songs like Bless His Soul, That's What You Get For Being Polite & Things I Do For You describe Michael's life perfectly.

Bless His Soul is a beautiful song, particularly the outro.

(Pretty much all the Motown career, (but if I select a few songs right now, not thinking too much and trying not too repeat too much from already mentionned ...)

- Make Tonight All Mine (not really caring about the lyrics but great melody and singing I think.)
- To Make My Father Proud (same comment)
- Little Christmas Tree (all who know it love it, every now and then I come across people who have never heard of it)
- Music and Me (the album)
- I Can Only Give You Love
- All I Do I Think Of You (and especially the Hiroshi Fujiware and KUDO remix)
- The whole Dancing Machine album
- Man of War
- Strenght of One Man
- Living Together

Literally allllllllllll of The Jackson’s discography! In my opinion Destiny and Triumph are some of the best albums of the 70s and 80s PERIOD! Yet most people don’t know what they are. In fact I’ll take both of them over Invincible ANY DAY!

A lot of The Jackson 5 stuff gets overlooked but most importantly are two of my favorite songs from the group. Forever Came Today and Get It Together. Very overlooked, especially the latter.

As for young Michael, When I Come Of Age is a beautiful song that (even though released late) should have garnered more attention. Music and Me (though popular enough) is one of the most beautiful songs of all time in my opinion and definitely should have had a longer shelf life. That should have been sang in all the Adult tours if you ask me, even over Ben. With A Child’s Heart is another severely underrated track that just touches your heart (pun intended) and showcases a gorgeous composition with Michael’s beautiful/changing adolescent vocals. Furthermore the Forever Michael album is PHENOMENAL! Absolute show stopper from beginning to end in my opinion and criminally underrated to the point of confusion!

Completely agree. I love 'Ben' but MaM has so much more resonance, imo, and is a song that can grow and take on deeper meaning at different stages of his life. A great showcase for his changing voice - or it could have been.

I need to dive into this one a bit more.
