What titles do we know of when it comes to song outtakes from the Jackson 5 and Michael?

I'm currently puttting together a list of songs that didn't make it into their albums, and I'm wondering which project each song belongs to. I'm especially asking this when it comes to the J5's songs, but I'm also asking about MJ's outtakes as well.

Here are 3 of them:

- 'My Favorite Things' (Jackson 5), which is a cover for their first Christmas album in 1970

- 'Doing Dirty' (The Jacksons), Michael Jackson wrote it with the help of his brother Marlon Jackson (for the 'Victory' album)

- 'Fantasy' (The Jacksons), Michael Jackson wrote it with the help of his brother Jermaine Jackson (for the 'Victory' album)

He's asking about Motown era stuff I think

Well you have the original version of "You're Supposed To Keep Your Love From Me" from the 1974 Stevie produced sessions with Michael and Jackie on backgrounds and Jermaine on lead.

Also, "No News Is Good News" also from those same 1974 Stevie sessions.

"I've Gotta Be Me" is an MJ solo outtake from the GOT TO BE THERE Sessions and it's one of the best vocals he ever cut! I still cannot believe this track has not been officially released!

"Be My Girl" is an outtake from the LOOKING THROUGH THE WINDOW sessions.

"She Say Want" is an outtake from the SKYWRITER sessions

"To Sir With Love" is an outtake from the first album sessions in 1969.

"Lavender Blue" is an outtake from the ABC sessions

"Love Call" - There is another later version of this song from the early LOOKING THROUGH THE WINDOWS sessions that is actually better than the version released in 2009.

"After The Storm" is an outtake from THIRD ALBUM

I put this list together about 10 years ago of all the J5 era sessions. It does not list the Christmas Album sessions although those took place around July or August of 1970.

He's asking about Motown era stuff I think
No, I'm taking about both the Epic stuff and the Motown stuff recorded by both MJ and the J5. I was going to include Janet and the others (e.g; Rebbie, Latoya, the individual brothers like Jermaine and Marlon) in that list, but then I realized that researching for every individual member would've been a nightmare to get through.

OK I get it. I can't imagine how jaorecords above pulled off such a impressive and detailed list of J5 recording sessions, as I am unable to find information for Christmas Album alone. If other Jacksons' work need to be included in this list, it will be such a nightmare.

I worked on the list for YEARS utilizing any released recording dates and working from that. There were a decent amount of dates listed on various collections. If you take what dates are listed it is easy to focus on what other material is from the same era or even month based on how MJ's voice sounds month to month and which Producers were used from track to track. I have taken this list and compiled all these tracks in this order onto an mp3 disc which I play in my car. Listening to their sessions in order is very interesting and you can hear the progression of MJs vocals month to month from 1969 through 1975.

There was very little if any info released about sessions for the JACKSONS material so I was never able to compile any lists for that era.

Can we confirm which songs from Christmas Album are recorded in July and which are in August?
Unfortunately that I cannot confirm. There very little info released about the dates of the Christmas sessions. From what I have read they were done in a very quick manner during the summer of 1970. I think the whole project was completed within a week or two but I do not have any proof of that.

This is the list I made using that other list when I was compiling my mp3 disc to burn.
Although I have never seen proof of it, I think there was possibly going to be a full album called SUGAR DADDY that would have come out at the end of 71 or early 72 but they kept recording and it eventually was released as LOOKING THROUGH THE WINDOWS and the song "Sugar Daddy" ended up on the GREATEST HITS album. In this list I split those sessions based on the dates into the SUGAR DADDY sessions and the LOOKING THROUGH THE WINDOWS sessions.

These collections can be made and listened to on streaming sites as playlists with the exception of a few tracks listed that are still "unreleased" but have leaked (To Sir With Love, Lavender Blue, I've Gotta Be Me, After The Storm, Be My Girl, She Say Want). Every other track is available on streaming.

I use YOUTUBE MUSIC because you are able to upload tracks into the system and listen to them alongside what is in their system. That is how I listen to these playlists with the leaked unreleased material

Stevie wonder produced a whole album
Yeah, I think that's where Buttercup came from.

I'm more interested with the outtakes from any of the Jacksons albums. I'd assume there must be some from the Gamble and Huff sessions?

It also looks like they worked on a song called "That Girl" for both the Destiny and Triumph albums.

I've also wondered if "Slipped Away" was an early working title to Time Waits for No One.

This is the list I made using that other list when I was compiling my mp3 disc to burn.

This is so great, now I can compile my own era collections (with alternative versions, remixes and live versions) according to your list!
I've done a steeltown collection before, but motown... It could be more fun! Million thanks to you again!

You've very welcome!!!! I've never thought of doing a Steeltown collection. That's a great idea!

It's kinda weird how Sony/Philly International is so secretive about unreleased music from the Jacksons. Motown's perfectly willing to spill out their vast amounts of music, yet PIR, despite being its east coast counterpart, doesn't even try to release any stuff from their artists that may have slipped under the radar.

I'm saying that because right now, I'm having a hard time finding anything from the Jackson's albums for Gamble and Huff. I know there's leftover songs out there, but no titles have been divulged from their post-Motown, pre-Destiny stuff.

Yeah, I've never heard of any unreleased titles from the Philly sessions. I saw Kenny Gamble at the brothers show in Philly a few weeks ago and I was going to try to ask him directly but I did not get a chance and he took off.

Wooo I’m floored unbelievably good info, thanks a lot @jaorecords!
I’m going to listen in chronological order for sure! So many great songs in the Motown period!

So what do you think are their still songs left that we don’t know of yet of the Motown era?

Well from the information that we have received we know they recorded 469 songs during their time at Motown. The last time I counted there was about 150 or so songs that have yet to be released. There are still quite a few tracks left in the Motown vaults.

I don't know, but I read somewhere around here (or another site) that Tito and Marlon were also supposed to have their own albums at the height of the 5ive's popularity, but they were shelved.

I hope Motown can use yet unreleased materials to release a second Christmas album (given there are so many leftovers), the Stevie Wonder produced album and a covers album. But of course I hope they can release more albums with unreleased music ;)

It's not directly the Jackson 5, but the brothers wrote & produced some songs for a girl group called M-D-L-T- Willis. I'm not sure, but I think Jermaine, Tito, Ronnie Rancifer, & Johnny Jackson played on the songs too. I don't know how many songs were recorded, but only 2 were released on a 45 (A&B sides) in 1974. The single was not on Motown. It on a label started by Joseph Jackson called Ivory Tower. The single didn't do well, but they performed the songs on Soul Train & was an opening act on a few Jackson 5 concerts.

I don't know if they actually recorded anything, but in the late 1970s, Rebbie, Janet, & LaToya were going to be a group and they took some publicity photos. But nothing became of it.

I remember before the Victory album came out, Right On! magazine (or Rock n Soul) posted a list of songs that might be on the album. Some of which were not on the released LP. I don't remember what the titles were and I can't find the issue. But I used to buy those 2 magazines at the time and also magazines called Soul Teen & Black Beat.

I don't know if this counts, but Mike sang on We Be Ballin' with Ice Cube & Shaq. It was a remix of We Be Clubbin'. The remix was never commercially released. It was supposed to be on a NBA related compilation album, but the album got cancelled.

Yes - except all post J5 reocrdings of Jermaine, of course.
So we have to subtract at least 30 tracks (20 songs on 2 Jermaine albums and 10 songs on one Jackie album all pre 1975)

I always had an interest in knowing how many songs MJ recorded (including duets, leads, background vocals) in his career.
Let’s say a minimum of 400 songs for Motown, 75 songs for his adult albums, 44 songs for the 5 Jacksons albums (though we have to subtract 4 tracks from Victory where he didn’t record vocals for).

So this is already over 500 songs not adding tracks that didn’t make the initial post 1975 albums, one off recordings for other artists (think centipede, eaten alive etc) and leaks.

Maybe he has recorded altogether about 600 songs in his career

- 'Slipped Away' (The Jacksons), Michael Jackson wrote it with the help of his brother Marlon Jackson (for the 'Triumph' album)

- 'That Girl' (The Jacksons), written by The Jacksons (for the 'Destiny' album, reconsidered for the 'Triumph' album)

- 'Power' (The Jacksons), written by Jackie Jackson (for the 'Victory' album)

- 'Nona' (The Jacksons), written by Jackie Jackson (for the 'Victory' album)

- 'Tender' (The Jacksons) written by Michael Jackson (for the 'Victory' album)

I don't know, but I read somewhere around here (or another site) that Tito and Marlon were also supposed to have their own albums at the height of the 5ive's popularity, but they were shelved.
I have heard that as well that there was plans to record albums on all the brothers including Tito and Marlon but from what I understand is they did not actually record them. It never went beyond a rough plan stage.
