Another old Smooth Radio story, this one from June 2022.

I was very happy to see Invincible at No.6. Smooth Radio said this:

'Invincible' gets an undeserved bad rep. It's only this low because of just how good the other five albums were! While it only spawned a couple of singles and it came out during a difficult time for Michael, both professionally and personally, as an album it's an underrated pop record from the early 2000s. Best songs: 'You Rock My World', 'Cry', 'Butterflies', 'Break of Dawn'
Definitely agreed. Dangerous will always be my personal #1 but Invincible has gotten much more flak than it deserves, IMO. I do have some issues with it, but it's not at all a bad album. Threatened is one of my favorite MJ songs, and I wish the short film had happened, though I understand why it didn't in the end.

Sean Coyle / Urban Smooth / Dublin South FM

He just played Is It Scary. I've never heard it on the radio before. Probably never will again.

IT SOUNDED AMAZING!!!!!!!!

My life is now complete.

The End.

So not on radio, or maybe on radio, I was outside and some kids were playing basketball, their radio or whatever device was playing some hardcore rap. And just when I was leaving, Billie Jean came on!! It was such a wonderful surprise!

oh, forgot to say, Gary Davies on BBC R2 played a Thriller mastermix which was a mixtape of the 7 singles off the album. It was OK but I probably should have stuck with Sean Coyle. Thank god I went back to him. Might have missed hearing Is It Scary on the radio. Probably a once-in-a-lifetime thing. 😲

Had a similar one yesterday. Heard Thriller being played. Went to investigate, thought it was from the shop across the road. It was coming from the 1st floor. I could hear a woman's voice. Sounded like either an exercise class or maybe a group of people practising for Thriller parade. Who knows? But it was blasting out nice and loud.

Ooh, that was good. Sean Coyle on Urban Smooth / Dublin South FM. He's just played 'Thriller' followed by J5 / 'The Boogie Man'.

@Seanc
I also played Ghosts, Threatened, Somebody's watching me, last year i included Heartbreak Hotel repalced it with The Boogie Man this year,,,,i really wanted to fit in Scared of the Moon too but i ran out of time.

Not a new thing....just a major Michael fan with his own radio show :)
Indeedy!!!

I also played Ghosts, Threatened,
goddammit!

Sorry, Sean. I popped over to R2 to hear their Thriller mastermix. It was fine, I guess, but I shoulda stuck with you. That's what I get for being disloyal, lol. :D

It's on my sound cloud should you want to listen again :)
I'm totally old-school and don't usually do catch-up. I prefer to catch stuff IRL or not at all. But I'm probably gonna make an exception here. 'Threatened' on the radio? Oh yes! I mean, it won't be the actual radio but ... oh, you know what I mean, lol. :D

... and thank the good lord you did, mate!! Hearing SOTM coming out of the radio would be too much. That song freaks me out. I've only listened to it twice, don't think I'll be listening any time soon. It's a great song but, man, it's intense!

Indeed.

Sean, back in August, when I listened to your show for the first time you said this:

"... the whole tapestry of Michael's work will be showcased as long as I'm alive ... "
Sean Coyle August 2022

As a statement of love, loyalty and intent that will take some beating. Loved it. I even wrote it in my notebook. :D

got distracted by @Seanc :D

forgot to say, yesterday (31/10/22) on BBC R2:

Ken Bruce show / Tracks of My Years - J5 ABC
Trevor Nelson / Magnificent 7 - MJ RTT

Another one from BBC R2 on Monday 31/10/22. I didn't hear this myself, got it on catch-up which I don't usually bother with but am still really interested to see how much Michael is back on R2 seeing as they did cancel him (they always insist they did not but they blinkin' well did).

Anyway, Zoe Ball, Breakfast Show - she played the full album version of Thriller. That's just awesome. It doesn't get much more mainstream than R2, breakfast show. Primetime!

Plus, she didn't talk over the song. She played the whole thing with no interruptions.

@wendijane - the full album version! Thriller! On R2! omg!

I think they always play the full album version on Belgian radio. Of course they chatter over the intro but still.
Usually over here that wouldn't happen, they would always use the short single version especially on a breakfast show. For primetime they just don't do album versions of songs. Generally, that doesn't bother me, I nearly always prefer the short radio edit of any song. But this got me so stoked. Plus, I'd forgotten how much I like this song, haven't played it in years. Literally.

But now? Thriller is back. It is BACK, baby!! Back on my playlist.:D

Yeah I didn’t listen to the full album in decades period! You hear 4 or 5 of those songs very regularly on the radio anyway.
But I sat down with it a few weeks ago, earplugs in and damn it I am all over it again. What a great album from top to bottom (imo). it is so weird to find new ways to appreciate it 40 years later. Take baby be mine for example that song is so groovy and totally not outdated. But the track that gained the most reappraisal on my part was thriller. That beat is so freaking awesome! Most fabe version is the video version though. I love how it builds up to the chorus. They could edit this for an album imo. All the verses back to back works great then there is the dancebreak (totally in love with that electronic duh duh sound) and then they have to build up that dancebreak by adding the organ going higher and higher before it explodes into the chorus and done.
If it gets released this way that would be my new favorite MJ song right there lol

I do agree that a release of the video edit of Thriller-the-song in audio format would be neat. However, I think as a song by itself, especially one that was released to radio, the original edit works a lot better. The video edit works really well for the short film, due to the way it builds up to a cinematic climax, but when you're only listening to the song by itself, putting all the verses at the beginning and the chorus only near the end would feel monotonous after a while. It'd just sound as if there's something exciting coming, but it never comes until the song is further along. I guess there's a reason why the conventional pop song structure is the way it is, and it's not always a bad thing.

But to go back to my first point: I know there are a lot of collectors in this community, as there are everywhere, and I can imagine that something like that would be a must-have. From a personal standpoint I'd still prefer the original version (outside of the short film, that is), but I'm by no means opposed to the idea.

@DangerousGal91

Yes but for the hardcore fans it would be a treat. That said there have been several pop songs with different structures that became classics. Think about Roy Orbison who practically made a habit out of it. He builds and builds till a climax and if that climax pays off it is really glorious 🤩
Michael has a track like that as well with we’ve had enough. His structures for earth song, be not always, will you be there, little susie or history are not conventional either.

Urban Smooth on Dublin South FM. Sean Coyle just played 'Smile'. It sounded majestic coming out of the radio. 🥰

He also played Brand New Day from The Wiz.

Sean Coyle just played WDYK and WALWTG. I'm starting to sound like a broken record but these two songs sounded majestic coming out of the radio. I don't know how else to describe it. Michael's voice is made for radio. The layers, the texture, the tone. Just the whole thing.

It was beautiful.

Has anyone ever heard a song like Leave Me Alone or Speed Demon on the radio in the U.S.A?
