Why the lip-synching?

Such a shame Michael has been heavily associated with lip-synching antics his whole life.
I know I said that before but yeah.
No superstar is ever 100% healthy so the health excuse is ridiculous. You either can or can't sing.If you can, then prove it live damn.
Michael's case was more of like either you want or don't wanna sing. He obviously chose the latter.
By the way:
I'm sorry but if someone with a vocal performance like the one Mike delivered here turned up on ,,The Voice,, or ,,X Factor,, they would most likely get laughed at. Just found this performance, damn this is just as bad as the Munich live vocals XD
Check this one

Check this one
no but fr what the heck?
was he seriously delivering f#cked up vocal performances for paying audiences across Asia in 96??
Seoul,Auckland,Tunis all are horrible vocally.
what the
(Tunis is in Africa but yeah)

I wonder if having a nose job could have affected his breathing? *no hate*
I think there was also shame about his looks, he had a lot of psychological problems. He hides his face a lot on stage especially in his post HIStory years, he never did that in the 80s, the YRMW video is very clear on that.

*no hate here either*

Dancers have strong bodies, that's for sure. Michael had the strength of a dancer, no question. But maybe his *basic* constitution wasn't so robust. We can't possibly know. A persons basic constitution is a different thing to their physical, muscular strength. But it's one reason why I'm not sure it makes any sense to be comparing him to other people.
In his later years did Mike exercise much? Up to around the Victory Tour, The Jacksons were constantly performing since the mid 1960s. So he had no time to sit around and get out of shape. Madonna works out all the time, whether she has a tour going on or not and she is the same age as Mike. Mick Jagger is around 80 years old now. He doesn't do choreography, but he is still running & jumping around onstage. Mick also had a heart operation a year or 2 ago. But like Madonna, he exercises. The members of New Edition/BBD are all over 50 and they can still do the moves the same as when they were younger, except Bobby Brown. But Bobby has been out of shape for years.

I'm aware of all of this and don't disagree with what you've said here - these are all fair points - but don't want to get into it so I'll just bow out.

Maybe but he Hides his face on YRMW too.

He wasnt hiding his face during TII. It must have been just the Invincible era.
True, I think he looked better again (read: more comfortable but still not the way he used to be) on TII

That’s all there is to it. You have to care for yourself, work out, if that doesn’t happen you will be out of breath from the start.
People have been loving and hyping his moves on the HIStory tour but imo he doesn’t look half as sharp as in the 70s/80s. Still good but not on top of his game. The MSG however is plain bad, sluggish, he moves like a tank. He got out danced by Usher there I said it.

There is also that cameo where he joins NSYNC on stage, I find his dancing there embarrassingly bad.
His cameo on the James Brown awards show (2003?)was great though, maybe he gave some extra effort in front of the king

Frank Cascio implies in his book that Michael Jackson hides his face in the 'You Rock My World' music video due to psychological problems brought on by people close to him.

"The summer of 2001 found us on the set for the 'You Rock My World' video, when John McClain, a long term adviser to the Jacksons, called me. He had met with the director, he said, and reported, 'They want to use make up to darken Michael's skin for the video. They also want to fill in his nose with putty'. He wanted me to suggest these cosmetic effects to Michael. He clearly didn't know Michael at all...A little while later I was back in my hotel room when the phone rang. It was Karen Faye, Michael's makeup artist, calling from Michael's room. She was supposed to be getting him ready for the video shoot, but he had locked himself in the bathroom and she had no idea why. She asked me to come to the room immediately. When I arrived, I heard Michael inside the bathroom, freaking out and throwing stuff around. Clearly John McClain had talked to him about the proposed changes to his skin and nose, and he was extremely pissed off. I tried to get his attention, but the chaos inside the bathroom went on. Finally I heard him bang something with such force that I got worried. I started trying to break down the door. At last, Michael let me in. He was sitting on the floor. He'd been in the middle of having his hair cut when he'd heard the news, so his hair was half long, half short. He was holding his hands over his face, sobbing. 'Can you believe it?' he said. 'They think I'm ugly? They want to put putty on my nose? What the f-ck is wrong with them? I don't tell them how they should look. F-ck them'. Talking through his tears, he kept saying, 'They think I'm a freak, they think I'm a freak, they think I'm a freak'…'John', I said. 'I can't believe you said what you said to Michael. We're going to finish this project, but there will be no more conversations regarding Michael's appearance in the video. If that's a problem, we'll walk off the set for good and deal with the consequences'…" (Frank Cascio, 'My Friend Michael' book)

It is also interesting that (according to that revelation), Michael Jackson's short hair at that time was not a stylistic choice, but a result out of frustration and anger because of those things that they said to him.

The embarrassing thing about his cameo, dance appearance with NSYNC (at the MTV Video Music Awards 2001) is that he missed the first and also the last cue.

Michael Jackson was not really old (in the HIStory Tour) for live singing and dancing at the same time.

Look, for example, at James Brown: he sang live and danced at the same time even during his very final shows when he was in his early '70s.

Michael Jackson was only in his late '30s in the HIStory Tour, meaning that this stamina claim does not make sense (about him being too old to sing live and dance at the same time).

It has been said that Michael Jackson was about to re-record (in the studio) many of his vocals in order to later use them on stage in those 'This Is It' shows (which is actually another, but more convincing, way of lip-syncing).
I never claimed 38 & 39 was old but he's obviously not going to have as much stamina as he did when he was 25 (hence him needing to use oxygen masks throughout the show). That's what normally happens with people; as they age they won't be as fit as they were before. It also applies to sports; athletes will obviously be fitter & have more stamina when they're 25 than when they're 39. It's also important to consider that Michael might've had some issues with his lungs on that tour which would've also affected his stamina.

James Brown may have still sung live when he was in his 70s but he obviously didn't have the energy & stamina he had in his 20s.

For some reason the vocals in WBSS didn't sound great on the History tour (might've been because of the lower key or the dancing) but everything else (YANA, Billie Jean, Beat It & Heal The World) usually sounded good and in some shows sounded amazing.

Trying so hard to figure out how to put my thoughts into words.
  1. Being at the concerts and watching on Youtube are 2 very different things, when you were there and he was onstage, no one cared it was a backing track.
  2. Analyzing 1990's through 2022 eyes you have no understanding of the difference in technology and society and why Michael made the decisions he did.

Can't agree with this rationale.

Freddie sounded like shit and was sick, but still sang live. Sure, the releases are processed vocally to sound better, but he sung live. I don't want to go to a concert to hear the CD track. I can bump it at home with no issues.

But you can't watch Michael dance. Many people go to concert for the whole experience, and not just to hear the artist live. I can do that on radio. I for one am happy he chose what he chose, we have seen some great dancing and performance in HIStory.

and there lies the difference in the Michael Jackson fan community. Some are fans of the man, the person and just actually seeing him in real life, breathing the same air as him, seeing the dance routines come to life on stage was enough.

Some fans are all about the music,

Neither are right, neither are wrong. But its understanding that there there is a difference is the main thing. :)

Very well said 👏👏

So well put. Bravo!

He may have been doing all of that but the point is a 70 year old isn’t as fit as a 25 year old (same usually applies for 39 year olds).
That's not necessarily so. An 86 year old healthy living fitness trainer is more fit than a 25 year old drug junkie who chain smokes, drinks a lot, and mostly eats fast food. Just because somebody is young doesn't mean they are fit.

But that's such a niche example you've chosen just to play devils advocate; exceptions don't disprove rules. I think we can all agree that 99% of 25 year olds are healthier than 86 year olds (most people aren't even healthy enough to live that long). Anyway the main point was Michael was fitter when he was in his 20s than when he was 39 which can be clearly seen in how energetic he was on stage, how little he used playback, the fact he didn't need to breathe in oxygen masks in between songs & how short his breaks were.

Health & fitness are 2 different things. I doubt 99% of 25 year olds can run a race, if they haven't trained in that like a track & field athlete does. Many young adults and children are not fit. The elderly people who are unhealthy and/or non-fit were most likely the same when they were young. Look at Jackie Chan, Jean Claude Van Damme, & Sylvester Stallone. They are still fit as older guys because they exercised most of their lives. Most people do not exercise. Jackie had a lot of injuries too, but he is still more fit than a lot of people his age.

None of those people are in their 80s but anyway as I've said obviously there are going to be a small number of exceptions but overall someone who's 25 which is considered to be a person's physical prime is going to be fitter than an 80 year old. Are you really going to try & say that most 80 year olds are actually fitter than most 25 year olds?

I just said most people of any age do not exercise. A fit person of any age is an exception from the majority of people. If you look at school sports & little league, only a small percentage of children do that. If everybody did it, then there probably wouldn't be college scholarships for athletes. With singers/bands, most do not dance. Many just stand in one spot or sit on a chair/stool. They don't have to be in the best shape because they are not doing anything that physical. Some have even performed drunk or high.
